So in just over a week Book 5 in the Harry Potter series called Order of the Pheonix will be out on bookshelves. Having been a staunch (though a closet) Harry Potter fan I'm definetly intrigued on this one. Books One and Two I found to be good, if not simple but the pace quickened with Book Three and I was blown away by how far JK Rowlings had come with Book Four. The plots got thicker, characters got more complex and the mood was darker. There was no Disney-fied ending. People suffered. People died. So, with that in mind, what do you all think will happen in Book Five? I'll post a few of the more juicy rumours that have been floating around the 'net............

 

- Order of the Phoenix is a secret organization that Dumbledore sets up but tells Harry and his friends to stay out of it.

 

^ This makes sense to me, as at the end of GOF Dumbledore tells Sirius Black to gather together Figg, Fletcher, Lupin and others that he refers to as "the old crowd."

 

- We will find out why Lord Voldemort killed Lily and James Potter

- The reason Voldemort wants to kill Harry is because he is the last remaining decendant of Godric Gryffidor

- Lily Potter and Voldemort may have had a past relationship

- Crookshanks is Mrs Figg (referred to by Dumbledore in GOF)

- Mrs. Weasley will die

 

^ I really hope that this does not happen. I've found myself growing oddly attatched to her character, mainly because she's the closest thing Harry has ever had to a mother.

 

-Voldemort will kill Dumbledore and Harry will become the most powerful wizard.

 

^ This is a very likely scenario, w/ Dumbledore "passing the torch" to Harry.

 

- Harry and Hermione will get together and be a couple

 

^ Nah. My $'s on Ron and Hermione.

 

Overall, I'm totally hyped on this book. The ending of GOF was amazing as it left you w/ the feeling that something big and new was going to go down in Book Five. Hopefully that's the truth.

Goblet of Fire was insanely awesome, but the delay between the fourth and fifth book totally took me out of wack. I don't remember much of what I've read, and I can usually remember everything in a book. I know Rowling were working on her movies, so she didn't have time for the books. I probably won't buy Book Five just because I don't remember what's going on.

 

All I remember from GOF was that at the end one of the kids died (the guy that was going out with the Asian girl that Harry liked) and Voldemort gets "released". That's all I recall.

 

My money is that in Order of the Phoenix...

The heavy rumours are that either Hagrid or Dumbledore are kicking it. I highly doubt Rowling would kill off Ron, that would turn a lot of fans off. Dumbledore makes more sense then Hagrid though, IMO.

 

Interesting point: In Book One when Harry, Draco, Hermione and Hagrid are in the Forbidden Forest and encounter the centaurs, one of them mentions that "the innocent are always the first to go." Interesting because the first person to really die in the war against Voldemort was Cedric Diggory who was very much an innocent.

Although even if this were to happen it would still be too early, but it would be cool to see an evill Harry.

These aren't spoilers, just my opinion so I don't need the tags.

 

1) Remus Lupin will die. He doesn't really do anything that Black can't, and is one of the lower ranking good guys. Also, Pettigrew has a new silver hand that could (and will) cause him problems.

 

2) Igor Karkaroff will die. This is pretty much a given.

 

3) Ludo Bagman will become a Death Eater in order to deal with his gambling deaths. He has been referred to in the past as being an evil wizard, and although technically he wasn't he is still very corruptable. Plus he has the necessary backstory and he's a coward.

 

4) The Dementors join Voldemort, and the prisoners of Azkaban are freed. This is also a given, but has relevence to the next point which isn't.

 

5) Afterwards, Voldemort will kill Lucious Malfoy and the other Death Eaters that betrayed him after his 'death'. This could either lead to Draco replacing his father, or ending up like Snape for the good guys. Pettigrew will not be killed since he was the one who actually rescued Voldemort.

 

6) Harry goes out with Cho Chang, but not much comes of it. She is available now, so why not?

 

7) Ron joins the Gryffindor Quidditch team. All that's left at this point is pretty much Harry and the twins, and since Ron likes Quidditch so much it makes sense.

 

8) Dumbledore does not die, but he's in pretty bad shape at the end. He will die in Book 6. I think we can expect a slow decline from him.

WHSmith is a mall store, so chances are that it'll be sold out there. I'm assuming that you're in Canada, so I'd suggest checking out Chapters or Indigo for books as they're likely to have overstocked.

Kahran- I agree with basically everything you said there. Karkaroff dying is SO happening, though I don't see Lupin dying, it just seems like an unescessary killing because I doubt it would mean much to the story.

 

I think Ron joining the Qudditch team is all but confirmed. He'll be their new Captain IIRC.

 

I'd mark out for Draco joining the good guys. I'd love seeing him and Snake conspire together, they'd be so good at being evil while doing good.

Lupin isn't really necessary to the overall story either. The reason I think he will die (besides setting it up with Wormtail) is because he is both a popular good character and expendable. A bad mix most of the time. I don't see her killing Black at all, but I doubt that both Black & Lupin will both make it through with characters that are so similar.

I feel the same way. I've read all four of the previous books, but as I sit here reading this thread, I find myself not remembering half of the characters that my fellows here are bringing up.

 

If Rowling doesn't give a long-ass delay between the remaining books, I may skip out on the rest of the series until it's done and complete and then read them all in sequence.

Not exactly Chewbacca, I guess? It probably didn't help that Rowling basically did the "not a dream, not a hoax, in this issue somebody DIES" hype. Still, I've been hearing very good things about the book, and as long as I can get my girlfriend a copy, it's all good.

 

Question: is the next chapter gonna be "Harry Potter and the novel that's thicker than the Oxford Dictionary"?

So what does everyone think of it then, I've just finished reading it and I reckon it's a lot more serious than the other books- I think the tones of the books are becoming more 'adult' as Harry matures. Definetly one of the better books but not quite as good as Goblet of Fire, my personal fave

A friend of mine pre-ordered it from Amazon and thinks she ended up with the British version. She says it's quite hard to read in spots, with turns of phrase she hasn't heard of, nor seen in any of the previous books. Anyone hear of something like this happening?

Put it this way, theres a rather pathetiv bait and switch before the death, and if that character had died, it would have made for a better ending

Well, technically, there's an American version and a version that's shipped to all other english-speaking countries. But I never thought the British slang ever interfered much with the story...I mean, you can pretty much figure out what they're talking about by the context. The only one I ever had to look up was jumper (sweater).

In the British version he is obviously referring to the capture of Moody and placing his own guy in at Hogwarts. The American line doesn't even make sense given the rest of the book.

 

Also, the American versions place the scar in the centre of Harry's forehead. Rowling herself has complained about that.

First Hardy Boys books get dumbed down, and then they get rid of the Queen's English in Harry Potter? Well, I was gonna buy the whole set from Barnes and Noble for my gf, but I guess I'm better off waiting until I go back to T.O. before I do. And a two finger salute to the US publishers...

- I marked like a motherfucker when Rowling brought back the centaurs. - Best written character in the book: Neville Longbottom. He steps it up and makes you believe that he can hang with the big boys. I have a feeling that in the next two books we'll be seeing the phrase "Harry, Ron, Hermoine and Neville" from now on. - Sirius' death wasn't that big of a shock, I was more expecting Hagrid or Lupin to kick it. He'll be back in some shape or form in Book Six probably. - I was a tad pissed off that Rowling didn't have Snape save Harry and Co. in a more dramatic fashion. We got a taste of what Snapes background was like and I'm ready for more now. - So, who's dying in Book Six? I'd probably place my money on Dumbledore, with the big showdown taking place between Harry and Voldy in Book Seven. - George and Fred's exit from Hogwarts was fuckin great.

Your last point was very true, and Peeves' reaction, and later behavior was even better, especially McGonagill's throwaway line as he's trying to dismantle the chandelier.

 

Point. If they get as far as this while making the movies, Umbridge, HAS, HAS, HAS to be played by Judi Dench
