Guest Risk Report post Posted March 27, 2002 Intercontinental would mean all the continents, making it a world title. So why is it a secondary belt? It makes no sense. They should just call it the Junior Heavyweight title like in Japan.
Guest teke184 Report post Posted March 27, 2002 It was originally called the North American title, but the name was changed when Ted Dibiase lost it to Pat Patterson because WWF management found out that Mid-South had a belt with the same name.
Guest treble charged Report post Posted March 27, 2002 Intercontinental sounds cool. Junior heavyweight (to me) sounds kind of like "light heavyweight", which the IC belt is not.
Guest Risk Report post Posted March 27, 2002 I knew it was originally the North American title, but the fact is that Intercontinental would make it a world title.
Guest teke184 Report post Posted March 27, 2002 They chose the term "Intercontinental" because they were looking for ANY term that no one else was using and could, therefore, distinguish the belt from Mid-South's North American title, the NWA territories' US and TV titles, etc. While it makes no sense, it did what it was intended for by setting it apart from everyone else's secondary title. Also, no title containing the word "Junior" will ever be taken seriously in the US, IMHO, because the name makes it seem inferior to every crappy title out there, even the Hardcore belt. Guest AlwaysPissedOff Report post Posted March 27, 2002 Where did you get the reasoning that intercontinental means the world? The preface 'inter' basically means inside(I'm too lazy to look it up now) and that means that 'intercontinental' = inside the continent.
Guest teke184 Report post Posted March 27, 2002 Actually, intercontinental implies multiple continents, as international means multiple nations. The name can be seen as "the belt for everyone outside the US", with the WWF title in the US being superior to the rest of the world.
Guest Zack Malibu Report post Posted March 27, 2002 Intercontinental is loosely translated to mean "Within the continents". So if Van Dam is traveling around the WORLD, defending the title on different CONTINENTS, then it makes the IC belt out to be a "world title". Maybe the IC belt will be RAW's "World Title". Could do an angle on the equivalency of the belts, having Van Dam be a "fighting champion" just like his ECW TV Title run, although putting RVD against Trips anytime soon is just going to result in heat reduction for RVD and another sluggish defense for The Glass Ceiling Installation Man. Guest Report post Posted March 27, 2002 Its true that the IC and world champs both control all the land on earth. The difference is that the world champ controls the oceans too.
Guest Report post Posted March 27, 2002 Ok then when angle had both the ic and euro belt he called himself the Olympic eurocontinental champion. What the hell does THAT mean?
Guest Risk Report post Posted March 27, 2002 Its true that the IC and world champs both control all the land on earth. The difference is that the world champ controls the oceans too. LOL. Anyways, I think the Cruiserweight or Light Heavyweight title should be the secondary belt. That would give the Cruisers a push.
Guest Edwin MacPhisto Report post Posted March 27, 2002 Eurocontinental champion was just a dorky thing for Kurt to call himself early in his career, and it worked really well for getting him over. You know, the potential of double singles champions is pretty damn good. It started Kurt on the path to stardom, and it made Lance Storm hugely over in WCW too. Too bad everything's split up now, so the chances of it happening again are pretty unlikely...but it's a decent way to get some guys going, at least in these last two examples. Guest Report post Posted March 27, 2002 In the WWF right now the Intercontinental Title means absaloutely nothing. blah.
Guest Spaceman Spiff Report post Posted March 27, 2002 Anyways, I think the Cruiserweight or Light Heavyweight title should be the secondary belt. That would give the Cruisers a push. But that would put the cruiser champ next in line for the world belt, which I don't think is very realistic. Guest AlwaysPissedOff Report post Posted March 28, 2002 In the WWF right now the Intercontinental Title means absaloutely nothing. blah. I couldn't agree more. The IC Title has been passed around more than Missy Hyatt in the past year ever since Jericho lost it. It's time to stabilize the goddamn belt and bring it back to it's past glory. Guest Edwin MacPhisto Report post Posted March 28, 2002 Yeah. Last summer was kind of an IC Title abomination. Since Jericho lost it, I only remember him, Regal, Edge, and Christian having the belt, and now RVD. Forgot entirely that Kane, Albert, Lance Storm, Test, and probably a couple others held it too. Yeesh.
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted March 28, 2002 I'll say this for the IC belt: RVD won it on the same day that the WWF title changed hands. Since then: RAW: IC belt defended against Christian WWF title not defended/interview Smackdown: IC belt not defended/promo WWF title not defended/interview Heat: IC title defended against Mr. Perfect WWF title not defended/does not appear Raw: IC title defended against Kurt Angle WWF title defended against Jericho and.............STEPHANIE. Spoiler......... Smackdown: IC title defended against Test WWF title not defended/tag match. END SPOILER.......... In essence....which belt is more useless right now? Guest Zack Malibu Report post Posted March 28, 2002 I agree, the Undisputed Title is pretty meaningless. Triple H isn't doing too well as a babyface, IMO. A long term run with the belt is probably just going to make more people turn on him. Rock's act, Hogan's act (while it is getting some amazing pops) and even Austin's act are all stale. RVD right now is probably the most over babyface they have going. I just hope that doesn't mean he's going to lose the I-C title to Shawn Stasiak on RAW. Guest Risk Report post Posted March 28, 2002 I just wish they had a name for the secondary that made sense. Maybe Television, Junior, Light Heavyweight, Cruiserweight, Secondary, Contender, ect. They need a name that makes sense.
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted March 28, 2002 I just wish they had a name for the secondary that made sense. Guest Report post Posted March 28, 2002 Secondary Championship? Contender Championship? That sounds awful. Intercontinental is fine. Maybe we should worry about the European title when the WWF rarely goes to Europe.
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted March 28, 2002 Or that by definition the European title should fall under the IC title's limits.
Guest Risk Report post Posted March 28, 2002 I just want a name for the secondary belt that makes sense. If you want to be technicle about it, the WWF title isn't really a World title. It is never really called that. IMO, they should change it to Television or Junior. Belt names need to make SOME sense. For example, the TV champ usually had to defend on TV and had a time limit. Belts need to be intresting again.
Guest Report post Posted March 28, 2002 If you want to make the belts interesting again, screwing around with their names is not the way to start.
Guest Risk Report post Posted March 28, 2002 Maybe they should not have have a secondary belt, it would put more emphasis on the Heavyweight title. Here is how I would do the titles. WWF Heavyweight title WWF Cruiserweight title WWF Tag Team titles That way all the titles would be important, and the Cruisers would be guarented a push, being the only other belt. The Cruisers can compete for the heavyweight title but those above 230 can't compete for the Cruiserweight title. So to become a grandslam champion, you would have/had to have been a Cruiserweight. Or you could always rename the secondary title the Television, that would fit with RVD.
Guest Report post Posted March 28, 2002 On the subject of secondary titles, there either needs to be just the Intercontinental title, or one title on one show. Having both RVD and Regal on the RAW side will accomplish nothing in making either title more important. As for the TV title thing, only the ECW marks who cared about how long RVD held the ECW TV Title will notice how it "fits". And if that comprises for 1/5th of the TV and live audiences, I'll be surprised.
