WWE U.S. Title tournament

U.S. Title Tournament. Eight competitors are named via lottery on Smackdown, two weeks before Vengeance. Stephanie McMahon does the lottery in the ring, and calls out the following names:

 

Chris Benoit

Rhyno

John Cena

Matt Hardy

A-Train

Rikishi

Charlie Haas

Shelton Benjamin

 

The next week on Smackdown, round 1 begins (on the Smackdown before Vengeance).

 

One Fall Match- Charlie Haas vs. Rhyno:

Both men enter the ring giving each other a cold stare. The bell rings, and then a standard lock-up ensues. Haas uses his amateur-style background and gets Rhyno in a waist lock. Rhyno tries to escape, but Haas takes him down to his stomach, still grappling with Rhyno. Rhyno turns it over and goes for a pin, but Haas gets out at 1. Haas drop-toe-holds Rhyno to the mat and gets a side hedlock. He rides a little high and Rhyno reverses it into a hammerlock. Haas tries getting up, but Rhyno plants him with a Hammerlock Body-Slam. Haas rises to his feet shaken up, and Rhyno gets an arm-wrench in. Haas is hurting, as Rhyno then executes a Single-Arm DDT, focusing on Haas' left arm. Goes for the cover, but Haas is out quickly at 2. Haas rolls to the outside to shake his arm-pain off, but Rhyno follows from behind, grabs his arm and rams it into the post. Rhyno rolls Haas back in as Haas favors the arm/shoulder area. Rhyno goes to grab Haas, but Haas gets another drop-toe-hold and this time gets Rhyno's left leg into a Half-Crab. Rhyno is too close to the ropes, and eventually gets there. Haas furiously stomps on the left leg of Rhyno in the corner. Rhyno goes to side-kick him in the head, but Haas grabs his left leg, and briskly leg-wrenches him down to the mat. Haas looks at the fans, but they boo. Haas throws Rhyno toward the other corner, but Rhyno reverses and runs after Haas. Haas tries to jump over Rhyno, but Rhyno catches him in mid-air and executes a Shoulder-breaker on that weakened left arm/shoulder. Goes for cover, Haas kicks out at 21/2. Rhyno prepares for the Gore. Haas turns around as Rhyno goes for the Gore, but Haas moves out of the way, and clips Rhyno's left leg, bringing him down to the mat. Haas rolls away and shakes his left-arm. Rhyno is favoring his left leg. Haas picks him up and throws him outside to stall. Haas goes outside, grabs his left leg, and does a Leg-First Atomic Drop onto the steel steps. Gets a big reaction from the fans, taunts them for heat. Haas throws Rhyno back in, and Haas slowly comes in. Rhyno tries running off the ropes and goes for a clothesline, but Haas ducks, grabs his left leg, and then puts Rhyno in the STF hold, putting pressure on the left leg. Hold ensues for 40 seconds, but Rhyno eventually reaches the ropes. Haas breaks the hold. Picks Rhyno up, throws him off the ropes and executes a dropkick on Rhyno's left knee. Haas favors his left shoulder a bit, but then begins knee-dropping Rhyno's left leg for more pressure. Haas then slaps on the Haas of Pain, in the middle of the ring. Rhyno trying not to tap, reaches for the ropes. He can't reach them, but Rhyno still does not tap. A frustrated Haas breaks the hold. Haas picks up Rhyno, throws him into the corner, and goes for a charging shoulder block, but Rhyno moves and Haas finds the steel post with his left shoulder. Rhyno then hobbles up, and gets ready for the Gore. The fans are popping as Rhyno charges towards Haas and Gores him. Haas sells well, as Rhyno favors his leg a bit before going for the pin. Rhyno pins Charlie Haas after the Gore. Rhyno wins and moves to the second round at 12:42. Rhyno celebrates a bit and then hobbles to the back.

One Fall Contest- Rikishi vs. John Cena:

Cena comes in first and raps well, getting the fans to give him heat before the match. Rikishi comes out to a good pop. Bell rings as both men trade punches. Rikishi gains the upper hand as he backs Cena into the corner with stiff shots to the head. He throws Cena into the other corner and gets a clothesline on Cena, which causes Cena to stumble to the middle of the ring. Rikishi comes off the ropes and hits Cena with a clothesline. Fans pop, Rikishi goes for a quick cover and Cena kicks quickly out before 2. Rikishi throws Cena off the ropes, goes for a clothesline, Cena ducks, comes back but gets a face full of Rikishi's superkick. Rikishi goes for the cover again but Cena gets out at 2. Cena rolls quickly to the floor to shake the cobwebs loose and reorganize himself. Crowd gives him heat as he walks around the ring. Rikishi goes after him, but Cena comes in quickly. Rikishi comes in and charges at Cena, but Cena gets an Overhead powerslam on Rikishi. Goes for the cover but Rikishi kicks out at 2. Cena shakes the cobwebs loose as Rikishi rests in the corner. Cena is in the other corner resting, and Rikishi then goes for a "BUTT First" Stinger Splash. Cena instinctively moves out of the way, and Rikishi hits the turnbuckles. Rikishi hobbles to the middle of the ring, as Cena comes off the ropes and nails Rikishi with a Bulldog Takedown. Cena taunts the fans for a bit, goes for the cover, but Rikishi kicks out at two again. Cena picks up Rikishi and goes to throw him off the ropes, but Rikishi reverses. Cena bounces off the ropes, Rikishi goes for a clothesline, Cena ducks, turns Rikishi around, gut checks him and gets a stiff DDT on him. Cena goes for the pin, but Rikishi gets a shoulder up at 21/2. Cena slowly picks Rikishi up, but Rikishi begins to punch Cena towards the ropes. He throws Cena to the other side, Cena bounces off, and Rikishi goes for a back-body drop. Cena goes to reverse with a Sunset Flip, but can't pull Rikishi down. Rikishi merely sits down on Cena's chest for a pin, but Cena barely kicks out at 23/4. Cena rolls over to the bottom turnbuckle, and Rikishi signals to the crowd for a stinkface. Crowd pops as Rikishi starts to back his way in. Cena grabs the middle ropes, uses his leg to grab Rikishi's head, and flips Rikishi over to stop the Stinkface. Cena shakes his cobwebs loose and taunts the fans who boo him. Rikishi gets up and charges at Cena, but Cena hoists him up on his shoulders, amazing the crowd with his strength. Cena then crisply executes his FU-DVD in the middle of the ring. Fans can't believe it, as Cena goes for the pin. Cena gets the win at 10:16 via pinfall after a FU-Death Valley Driver. Cena taunts the fans at the top of the ramp, and motions to his waist signifying his poise to win the US Title. He taunts Rikishi with his pinky sign and walks away.

One Fall Bout- Matt Hardy vs. A-Train

Matt Hardy comes out only with Shannon Moore out of his MF'ers. A-Train waits in the ring as Matt walks around, talking with Moore. Matt slowly enters the ring. The bell rings and A-Train charges at Matt with clubbing blows to begin. A-Train keeps Matt in the corner while hammering on him. A-Train whips Matt to the other corner, and charges full speed ahead, yet finds nothing but turnbuckle as Matt moves out of the way. A-Train stumbles backwards, and Matt hits him with a standing neckbreaker. Matt goes for the cover but A-Train powers out before 2. Matt goes to throw A-Train off the ropes, but A-Train easily reverses, and catches Matt with the Sleeper. Matt slowly works A-Train to the ropes as the ref follows. Suddenly, Shannon Moore nails A-Train in the spine with a steel chair, without the ref noticing. Crowd "oohs" for a bit, as A-Train is bent forward favoring his back. Matt capitalizes with the Twist of Fate. He goes for the pin and beats A-Train after only 1:22. Matt quickly exits the ring as A-Train is barely pulling himself up on the ropes. Matt and Moore celebrate at the top of the ramp, getting some good heat.
