Skies of Arcadia- DC vs. GameCube

Recommended Posts

Over the last couple years, I have lost a lot of interest in gaming for no apparent reason. Even games that interest me at first, I give up on soon after. (By the way, if you have suggestions/cures for that, feel free to name them). However, lately I have been thinking about buying my friend's GameCube since I have none of the current generation of systems and a lot of the games previewed or released in recent months have me very interested in playing them. Besides, he's selling his system, 2 controllers, 2 memory cards, Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime, WrestleMania X-8, 007 Nightfire, and Resident Evil for $150, so that's a great deal in my opinion.

Anyway, enough backstory. I've never been much of an RPG aficionado, despite playing games for nearly 17 years. I just haven't played very many, but the ones I have played over the last couple years- Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, and Paper Mario come to mind- have greatly entertained me. However, I never finished any of them due to the aforementioned loss of interest I have had in almost all games.

Just recently though, I played a little bit of Skies of Arcadia on Dreamcast. It was one of the best hours I have ever spent with a video game. I have been reading as much stuff as I can find on the game, and my interest is piqued. I have an opportunity to acquire a burned copy of Skies for DC for free, but I'm torn. On one hand, I would love to play through the game right now. On the other hand, I hear the Cube version is improved and I am considering buying that after I get my GC instead.

For those who have played both versions, would it be more fulfilling if I waited and experienced the GameCube version in all its glory, or would it be good to play through the original now in order to get used to the style and be able to appreciate the new content? Also, can anyone make suggestions on how I can regain my rabid interest in gaming?

Try not playing a game for 8 straight hours and do not cheat using Game Shark or Action Replay. You need to get some multiplayer games going.

From what I read about the GC version, the enhancements are minor. I own the DC version, and it's pretty awesome. Since I got it for 20 bucks and probably the GC version is twice as much, I think the DC one gives you more "bang for your buck." If you happen to see a copy used for 25 or so for GC, by all means pick it up.

However, I'm not one to spend twice as much on a slighly enhanced version of a game. Sonic Adventure DX won't be spinning around in my GC for that reason, and also the reason that I didn't buy my GC to be a Master System emulator (the Game Gear titles are a nice bonus, but not nice enough).
