According to a book about WWII, the generls wanted to go into Moscow.Hitler decided to pull armor out of the Army Group Center to help Army Group North and South. The week of squabbling gave the Russians time to regroup.

 

One of the biggest mistakes was the Nazi's treatment of the Ukranian. Ukraine wanted its independence for Russia and when the German's entered the area they where greeted has liberators. Instead of making allies with the Ukranians, which had land,resources,and population they raped, murdered, and robbed because they where slavs.
