The Predator Series....

Recommended Posts

Guest The Mighty Damaramu

Ok I just watched both Predator movies again and let me say.....these movies still rock.

I don't know what it is but these movies are something that will always be badass mindless action flicks.

I mean the Predator is just this unhatable cool bad guy. I mean who could dislike a guy that kicks that much ass so easily?

So let's have a discussion on the two Predator movies.

What do you guys think?

Like/dislike?

Anything you noticed on other viewings that you didn't notice before and we may not have noticed?

Did you have hopes for a 3rd one after they presented Danny Glover with the Revolver? I mean a Predator: Wild West would kick ass.

I didn't like Predator 2 very much... I just think it wasn't very good as a movie. The Predator himself was still cool, he had some sweet new weapons, and said "motherfucker", which is always a plus. I also thought the Alien skull was pretty neat.

The first Predator was damn good, I can't think of anything offhand that I didn't like. My favorite part was that whole sequence with the scorpion. Quite subdued and ominous, which is good.

If I was making another movie, it'd have been Predator in the Suburbs... no real competion or sport there. Just seeing him wreak havoc and score a massive body count in a quiet suburban neighborhood would be pretty cool, in my opinion.

What I liked about the two Predator movies was the contrast in environment.

Predator 1 = Rainforest Jungle

Predator 2 = Urban Jungle

Sure the first one was better, but for what it was I enjoyed the second one as well.

If there was a Predator 3 that took place in the suburbs, there would be a HUGE body count considering all the cops that would be out there after the the Predator kills the first yuppie...

I never liked Predator 2. I just thought it was an all around bad movie.

Paul "bad director" Anderson is Gonna be making A Vs P pretty soon. That makes me sad. I grew up on Alien and Predator movies and now they're fucking them up for movie and giving them to a piece of shit like Anderson.

I hate movies today!

Oh, c'mon now. Resident Evil wasn't THAT bad. And I always liked Predator, at least the first one, because it had Jesse Ventura in it.

Resident Evil was a piece of poop. I hate everything it is. It could have been an awesome movie, but it had to be all pseudo "cool" with slow motion and kung fu because somebody told Paul "God I wish my middle name was 'Thomas'" Anderson that, that was what the KIDZ liked or something.

I think if I gave my retarded pet Monkey a video camera, he would make a better movie a about zombies than him!

"If it bleeds we can kill it"

"I aint got time to bleed"

"So I go to my girlfriend and tell her I want a litte pussy. She says 'me too mine's as big as a house'"

I love Predator pure ass kicking, manliness and violence. And the Body.

I find Predator 2 a decent enough action yarn. Busey rules in that.

Anyways back to Predator...........

him in the suburbs wouldn't really work b/c he only attacks those that are armed. There's more sport in that.

Remember when the girl went for the gun that was dropped in the jungle and Arnold said "No he didn't kill you because you weren't armed!"

When he noticed that the kid was holding a toy gun in the 2nd one he backed off.

And he only killed the armed passengers on the subway.

Mortal Kombat - Best game-to-movie transfer yet. Also a quality action film with decent direction, a killer soundtrack, and good fight scenes.

Event Horizon - Very good modern sci-fi/horror, albeit cheesy at times. I was legitimately scared the first time I saw it, because it creates a good atmosphere until the final 15 minutes. The final 15 minutes are somewhat of a disappointment, but that's only because the build was very good.

Soldier - Underrated sci-fi/action film. Not that great, or even that good, but doesn't deserve a lot of the shit it gets spewed at it.

Resident Evil - Fun movie that is BASED on the game. Before the movie came out, we were told it would be BASED on the game, not that it would be the movie version OF the game. Fun popcorn flick that the cast had fun making.

Anderson is a decent director, nothing more, nothing less. With the right person writing the AVP script, or even supervising it (**cough, cough**MARK VERHEIDEN**cough, cough**), the movie won't turn out too shabby. It won't be like Aliens or Alien, or even the first Predator, but it probably won't be as bad as Alien Resurrection.

Let us never speak of Alien Resurrection again........*shudder*

Yes....I've decided using the d20 Roleplaying system I'm going to make a Predator roleplaying game.....but how would you break this down into a game with 3-5 players? I mean most Predators are solitary.....I guess if I go into a big backstory about how they're neophytes that have to work together because they're not as strong the ones from the movie.

I enjoyed Mortal Kombat back in the day, crappy acting aside. It was fun. The sequel is also one of the most unintentionally funny movies I've ever seen.

Event Horizon is a nice crappy guilty pleasure with some exceptional atmosphere and twisted gore.

Soldier was mind-numbing, and I remember counting. Kurt Russell said less than 100 words in the entire film. You can pull it off if you're Schwarzenegger, but not Kurt Russell.

Resident Evil was ridiculous.

Yet I have managed to see all of these. God help me. At least half were on video. As for the Predator movies, I love the first, and don't mind watching the second when it's on TBS now and then. I was always amused at how ridiculously long it took to kill Gary Busey in that one. I also don't expect Alien vs. Predator to ever actually be completed, since it's been in various stages of idle production since 1968.

Maybe have it be 5 players trying to get to the Predator?

Or have it be a Bughunt. They're hunting in a pack for an Alien queen (in the comics, they do this quite often). Or maybe a tribal war...?

As the nerd juices flow, I think your neophyte idea is a good one. Most RPGs in that sort of system work better with characters who are coming into their own/growing up/rising to power anyway. If you started with a bunch of perfect killing machines, there wouldn't really be anything for your players to progress towards. Though you really ought to have one of them RP the wacky Predator sidekick, Danny Glover.

Base it on the Aliens Vs. Predator arcade game. Now THAT game was bitchin'. Dutch Schaeffer with a mechanical arm that had a machine gun in it, some chick with a pistol and a kitana, and two Predators...all fighting aliens Final Fight-style.

Mmmmm...I LOVED that game.

I still play that game from time to time, and yes it kicks mucho ass...

MK was excellent for what it was. I still say that remains the blueprint for making a movie based off of a video game. Translate DIRECTLY to the screen what made the game so popular, have a passable script, and try not to take it too damn seriously. It ain't rocket science.

I think Danny Glover pulled P2 up from the depths.. the scene at the end when he had spent every last bit of himself to kill the predator, only to see several more of them appear and he said:

"All right.... who's next?"

Gold, I tell you.

Ther should have been a P3 with both Arnold and Danny to have the blow-off to the series, but no, that was not to be.

AVP sounds intriguing, but they do need to base information from the novel series in order for it to make sense just to the fans of the series, but i think that it might be too late to make a movie and have it accepted by those outside of fandom.

Just one man's opinion.

I totally agree with the post above about Glover, and the Jamacains with the car full of smoke was good for a cheap pop.

I Loved both movies, and I actually like Predator 2 a little more even though the first is a better movie with alot more cool one liners, just because it advances the Predator backstory more and they actually beat the Predator. And yes the scene where the old Predator gives glover the revolver kicks ass, it was just a cool way to show that they had been there before and they would be there again.

The Alien/Predator mythos, if you can call it that, is indeed interesting. Dark Horse has also done an incredible job with both series, particularly the AvP series (AvP, AvP: Duel, AvP: War) and the first three Aliens series (Book I, Book II, Earth War).

Event Horizon is teh ass. It's the sum of parts from Outland, Hellraiser, and about 5-6 other movies and was cut together in a piss poor way. Example-

Spoiler (Highlight to Read):

The scene where the crewmember gets decompressed in the elevator is straight out of the opening sequence of Outland.

If Anderson had made the loose threads in the film connect, I MIGHT have a higher opinion of the film but it still wouldn't be good.

Can you tell me just how else they are to show something like that?

I won't disagree that it was cobbled together from the concepts of several other movies, though.

I got both DVDs of the Predator movies recently and I have to say that the 2nd movie is maybe better than the first. The first movie has a really jarring transition from the initial plot of them attacking the compound to then being stalked by Predator. It's a cool movie though, wish Jesse had lived longer.

Predator 2 was one I had low expectations for going in, but it was real cool. It's a total contrast to the first one in that instead of a jungle the Predator is now tearing loose in the big city. Dare I say most of the people he kills are scum so Predator kinda falls into the tweener category. The last half hour with Glover attacking the Predator, then having to run, then ending up on the ship and confronting all of them is just bad ass.

Predator 2 is mainly seen as inferior because, well, it didn't make any money.

I'm guessing everyone knows by now, but according to Empire AvP with Paul Anderson at the helm has just been given the go-ahead to start shooting in Prague.

As long as Anderson reads the comics and doesn't just make it "hey, the Predators are gonna fight the Aliens," then it can be fun. I'm not expecting anything to the quality of Aliens (since the movie had about 12 subplots to it, as well as top-notch effects for its era and action), but it shouldn't be too bad.
