Writers: How/Where?

Recommended Posts

Guest Ace309

As I'm sitting here planning out an epic SWF PPV match, I'm debating where I'm going to try to crank this one out.

I do a lot of my writing parked right in front of this machine, of course, but I'm also relatively mobile thanks to an oldschool Palm and a folding keyboard that I originally bought for taking notes in class. I'm fond of the cliche coffee shop and restaurant, but I've also found that I can write pretty well outdoors as long as I have some place I can brace my keboard.

See, I tried that, but she feels like I'm not giving her my full attention.

Also, the money shot gets the keyboard all sticky.

Normally, on my desktop PC at home. I also have a laptop, which I can use to write in my room before I go to sleep, then hook it up to the network and copy whatever I wrote to my main PC. I've also done some writing at work in my bored moments.

depends. there's 2 kinds of writing for me:

1) sit-down, serious writing

2) random, sporadic note-writing

for 1) i need my discman and a place that serves coffee. could be jittery joe's, could be barnes & noble, anyplace like that. coffee is an almost-necessity--i don't need it, but it helps me immensely when i write. when i'm at a bookstore i'll just sit in the cafe, but in a coffee shop i'll always get coffee when i sit down to write. a pilot v-ball pen is another semi-necessity, and i have different notebooks designated for specific things i'm working on. i've basically got it down to a fetishized cult ritual.

for 2) i've been lucky enough to land jobs that give me a lot of free time, so a lot of times i'll have a pen & paper on me and be thinking about whatever i've been working on (usually under the influence of coffee), and i'll jot down any ideas that i get. my dresser is covered with folded-up scraps of paper that have little random notes written all over them.

other idiosyncracies: i can't do any creative writing on a computer, and i can't do any creative writing at home. the only exception is when i bust out the typewriter occasionally & just have fun with it--the typewriter's got its own kind of "cult value."

I try to keep pen and paper with me at all times, even if it's only in my car, because I never know when I'm gonna get an idea or a few lines of verse will pop into my head, or an idea for a scene, etc. I did have a portable cassette recorder (you know, like the ones you use to record lectures with), but it was in my purse when my purse got stolen. That thing was great, though, because if I was driving, I could just pull it out of my purse and start talking scenes and stuff through while recording. The mood strikes me pretty much anywhere and everywhere, though, so I guess you could say that I can write just about anywhere.

I do, however, think I'm probaby odd in the fact that I prefer to write everything on paper and then just type everything up once I'm done. Paper just works so much better for me for some reason.

Nothing odd about that... EX: I have been trying to update my personal website for months now, and the only way I can get things out about myself is if I write them down on paper first, then type them out, elaborating on this or that point as I go.

Quirky, but it works for me.
