DC Comics Movies

Recommended Posts

Guest EdwardKnoxII

My sister and me were talking about this awhile back. Remember once upon a time when DC was pumping out big screen hits of Batman and Superman while Marvel was lucky to get a crappy 2 hour TV movie. But, nowadays Marvel keeps pumping big screen hit after hit for all kinds of different heros while DC is just spinning it's wheel trying to go back to Batman or Superman. But, what about the other heros in the DC world?

I don't know about you but, I could live without a Batman movie or talk of one for at least the next 10 to 15 years. And as for Superman I'm happy with Smallville thank you very much and would rather have a Superman movie with the cast from the show. Where's talk about a Green Lantern or Flash movie?

With todays special effects wouldn't you just love to see Green Lantern on the big screen making all kinds of cool things with his rings or see the Flash hauling ass around the world. Hell if done right an Aquaman movie could alright to if they show the fans he's nothing like he was in the Superfriends.

Now my sister thinks they should do a JLA movie but, I think they show showcase the heros in their own movies before doing a JLA movie so the fans would know more about them.

So what do you think about DC wanting to do another Batman or Superman movie. What DC heros would you like the see on the big screen?

JLA could be good if done correctly. A GL movie would bomb. The character is a always changing thing and to bring in the alien thing would turn casual movie goers off, IMO. Flash isn't interesting enough to have a movie all about him. Aquaman and WonderWoman I could see on the big screen but that's about it.

Aquaman is a prissy lil bitch. If they ever made a movie based on him, I would hope it'd bomb.

Actually, he's not. I think you're thinking of the Superfriends version.

Are we talking about the same pissed off bad ass that's existed for the past 10 years or so?

I would love to see a JLA movie, but it probably wouldn't/couldn't be pulled off correctly. Seeing GL's ring in use on the big screen would rawk though.

Live action JLA would be hard to make correctly and I would rather they not try.

Now a animated JLA feature film I could go for.

No, I don't remember that at all. I remember Superman and Batman and that's it. Superman was in the 70's and Batman wasn't until 89. I wouldn't say that was "pumping" much of anything out. DC has always sucked when it comes to movies, this isn't a new thing.

Marvel has a much easier time doing what they're doing because they can sell their different characters to whatever studio they want. Spiderman to Sony. Hulk to Universal. Punisher to Artisan. Blade to New Line. X-Men and Daredevil to Fox. DC can't do that since they're a Time Warner company so anything they have is locked into Warner Brothers and WB has done nothing but prove themselves to be unable to get anything made. It's also the reason why those other characters don't stand much of a chance. There is obviously no way that WB could be able to afford to turn every DC character into a movie like Marvel can do cause WB would have to foot the bill for every single one of them, so they just focus on the sure things instead of the obscure guys. If they had the ability to farm them out to a bunch of different studios I'm sure we'd a get a lot of cool movies. Too bad Time Warner is ran by idiots and only seem able to make a Wonder Twins movie.

A Green Lantern movie would rock my world.

but I'd demand it involve the Corps somehow. I really wouldn't care about fitting it all into continuity. Just give me Hal, give my Kyle, and give me the Corps.

A Hellblazer movie is in the works. The only downside is that Keanu Reeves is going to play Constantine.

Read what I said again I said just Superman and Batman movies. And DC was doing alot better and making more money in the movie the department then Marvel was at that time. And when I said "pumping" I mean to the big screen.

Guys like Green Lantern or the Flash aren't obscure, hell I would say that untill a few years ago alot of DC heros were more well know then Marvels was. But, GL and Flash aren't as well known as Supes and Batman (ie Ask anyone one on the street or show a pic and they would know GL, Flash, WW but, I bet you they wouldn't know they secert IDs, or that they were 3600 GL's, etc. Hell I remember when I was reading some tradepaper backs at work and one of my co-workers looked at it and was shocked that Robin was now Nightwing in a cool suit and how different Aquaman looked.)

But, really if they would put some effort in to the movies I sure they could make some big bucks because it seems that they is a gold mine in comic book movies that DC isn't cashing on.

Too bad Time Warner is ran by idiots and only seem able to make a Wonder Twins movie.

Yes, yes they are but, that's been known for years now.

There was a Flash movie, and Dawson's dad was in it and Luke Skywalker was in the sequel, and they were BOSS

What do you know? Me and raz actually agreeing on something. I had forgotten about Lobo, it's been awhile since I saw him in a book.

Oh, by the way Raz, congrats on the playoffs, it won't happen again. :D

But not a major motion picture though. Those were either a bunch of episodes from the TV series or a made for tv movie.

I would love a Nightwing movie. That would be awesome.

I don't know how well it'd sell, but much like how some villians would occasionally have thier own book, giving them their own movies wouldn't be too bad. That's one thing with comic movies is always killing off the villian. In some cases it's good as the villain was horrible, or not to ruin them, but some wouldn't hurt and actually might help to be given "a second round".

Isn't some studio interested in making a Wonder Woman movie now?...

....

....Please tell me you're joking.

I for one hope that the Sandman movie NEVER comes to pass, given the shit they've come up with for it in the past.

If Gaiman was allowed to do it, okay. Otherwise, hell no.

It's not a joke. And get this, Constantine isn't even British-- he's AMERICAN.

Well, might I just say that making all these fringe comic books into movies is going to run the genre back into the ground.

I don't think that Aquaman or Green Lantern would have the overall appeal and drawing power of Superman or Batman for DC.

Exactly. Comic fans know them, and even some non-fans may have heard of them, but they're not the icons that the others are. Could they have some cool movies? Sure. But they don't have the instant name-recognition across the board that Batman and Superman have. There are others with good visibility that could bring in a crowd, but the WB suits don't know shit so it doesn't matter. You have a bunch of 80 year old men sitting around a board room, a producer comes in and holds up a picture of the Green Lantern and a picture of Superman, which one do you think those guys are gonna pick?

Well, it looks like WB HAS let somebody else take one of the DC properties, New Line is making Shazaam. Of course New Line is a Time Warner company too isn't it?

Still, come on, the only ones they can actually get going is this crappy Catwoman movie, The Wonder Twins and Shazaam? Does anybody actually want to see ANY of those?

The best part? New Line wants the Rock to play Shazaam. That's just perfect casting right there.....in Bizarro world.

The moronic movie goers will mistake Shazaam for Kazaam.

A movie for the Wonder Twins? What the hell that shit. Does anyone honestly want a movie about THEM?

Never thought I'd see "form of waaaater" done in CGI.

I guess they are trying to cash in on the gay superhero craze???

The WonderTwins movie would suck ass.

And if Shazzaam actually gets made with the Rock as the star I will probablly have to start to boycott The People's Champ.

Hollywood really misses it sometimes.

The reason Blade became a success wasn't because it was a comic book property, although that did give it a nice fanbase. It was a success because it had Wesley Snipes looking cool and kicking alot of ass.

The fact is for a comic book movie to work you have to have the right things in place. The right director, writer, a fanbase that is somewhat flexible to change, and a studio willing to let them do what they want to do.

And most importantly the comic book has to have the right premise. Honestly the only major comic book characters that haven't had a major movie yet that I can see working is Hellraiser: Good premise if done right, Fantastic Four: I hope it dosen't suck, The Infinity Watch: obscure? yes. cool premise? definately, and possibly Captain America: but it would suck internationally.

The truth of the matter is comic book villians are almost always written better and would be infinately more easily accessible to film. Yet no one has the guts to do it.

P.S. There are other comic franchises that could make good movies, but I am not familiar with all of them.
