Is It Just Me

I don't know how many of you follow the Chicago Cubs closely, but I'll asume that some of you may get something out of this. The Cubs just traded Mark Bellhorn and a minor leaguer to the Colorado Rockies for...Jose Hernandez.

Now, granted Jose has hit well at times, but the fact is, he's always struck out a LOT and often times in bad moments. He played for the Cubs for many years, and as a hardcore Cubs fan, he caused many rage-filled moments for me.

Bellhorn has been struggling a bit this year, but he was great last year, hitting nearly 30 homeruns, which was a franchise record for a switch-hitter. Maybe it's just me, but I think the Cubs have made a big mistake, giving up a solid young prospect (possibly two), for an aging, impatient vet.

It really doesn't make sense to me either. Hernandez does not hit enough homers to make up for the poor strikeouts. I thought he would have a big year this year like a Vinny Castilla in Colorado type deal. But if he isn't performing up to snuff in Colorado why is there any thought that he will be good in Chicago.

And it really doesn't make sense when you consider they are still saying the Cubs will make a run at Lowell after the All Star break. Is Jose Hernandez that much better than Bellhorn (or whoever was playing 3rd) that you HAD to go get him for only a month?

I fear Bellhorn's season last year was a fluke. Either way, this trade won't hurt the Cubs significantly. Interestingly, Bellhorn asctually has a higher career K rate than Hernandez.

How much is Jose making this year? Another thing that seems odd to pay decent money to a bum who will only play for a month.

On a somewhat related note do you think the Marlins will get a better offer for Lowell than the Cruz/Hill deal the Cubs apparently have on the table?

And that's the thing--I don't know what he was playing in Colorado, but he was predominantly a shortstop when he played for the Cubs. I rarely recall seeing him over at the hot corner, although I know he did play it once in a while.

1. It seems premature to say Hernandez will only be around for a month.

2. Hernandez is adept at playing both SS and 3B.

3. Hernandez makes around $1.5 million this year.

the Cubs got Hernadez because they aren't going to get Lowell, because they don't want to give up anything more than an eh young pitcher and a crap young infielder. This is just how the Cubs operate.

As for Bellhorn, I don't know wether last season was a fluke or not, but he played like balls this year.

The Cubs might be hesitant to give up too much for Lowell know that a former pitching prospect Willis has done so well in Florida. That's certainly someone they could use.

Between Patterson and Hernandez, people at Cub games will be feeling the breeze.

I really hope we get Lowell. The offense is so damn inconsistent. One day they score 6, the next day they get 1.

Oh, and Florida can have Shawn Estes if they want him.

Patterson may strike out a lot, but he makes up for it a lot with his excellent fielding.

How bad has the Cubs lineup become when Sammy doesn't even qualify for the "feeling the breeze" joke?

Sammy doesn't strike out near as much as he used to, although it is quite a bit. He also walks a lot more than he used to.

Remember, Hernandez was benched in Milwaukee just so he wouldn't break the 200 K barrier. Patterson has a good average, but his OBP is only maybe 30 points higher.

You pretty much summed it up. Sammy really improved on his patience at the plate around 1998, when he began to hit excessive amounts of homeruns. He's been improving since, although when he does slump, he does tend to strike out like the good old days.

1. Agreed. Dealing a solid player like Bellhorn, while still playing Lenny Harris, for a guy like Jose K. Hernandez, only to deal him again seems just a bit too Cubs-ian

2. In his first year in Milwaukee, Hernandez was the starting 3B. In that year he also posted some of the worst numbers of his career. In his last two years his numbers returned to normal, including last years career highs.

3. Jose Hernandez COL $1.0M. courtesy of the Major League Baseball contracts website.
