Guest The Son of Sting Report post Posted March 28, 2002 I was watching this match with a friend and he thinks the crowd boos because they think the match should have been given to Benoit and i say that its because they are an extremly bad/stupid crowd and didnt want to see another 5-10 mins of the two best workers on the planet, please settle the argument. Guest Tony149 Report post Posted March 28, 2002 Benoit did win the match with help from Women. The match was very good but was in front of a bunch of bikers who probably got in for free and didn't know much about wrestling. They really didn't cheer much. Guest The Son of Sting Report post Posted March 28, 2002 I know Benoit won, but after the first 20mins and then 25mins when the ref gives them 5 more minutes my friend thinks they boo because the ref should have awarded the match to Benoit.
Guest Tony149 Report post Posted March 28, 2002 They booed because they wanted a winner in the match. Everytime a match ends or in this case almost ended without a winner the crowd boos.
Guest Zack Malibu Report post Posted March 28, 2002 The crowd at this event was horrible. Notice the heelish, almost racist reaction that Harlem Heat got from the biker crowd. And Hogan's recent heel turn meant shit, since he got the biggest face pop of the night. But WCW went back for more, with such classics as Leno/DDP vs. Bisch/Hogan! Crappy matches and crappy crowds, that's WCW!
Guest Mystery Eskimo Report post Posted March 30, 2002 The announcers sold the booing as the crowd thinking Benoit should have won, but in reality, yes, they were stupid and probably wanted to see Hulk.
Guest reverse knife edge Report post Posted March 30, 2002 They were booing because they were bored. They were bored because they were largely a bunch of drunken, non-wrestling fans who wouldn't know a good match if it bit them in the ass. Excellent match. Zero heat. Guest TheDames7 Report post Posted March 30, 2002 Everytime they ran in Sturgis, the crowd only popped for people they knew, heel or not and that really hurt the event IMO. NWO Hogan at his peak was a face there. Dames - Is In His Peak
Guest Jay Report post Posted March 30, 2002 So many great matches happened at Hog/Road Wild. The first WCW encounter between the Ultimo Dragon and Rey Mysterio Jr. was on the first event. The underrated Alex Wright/Chris Jericho CW title match from the 97 event was on there. The events were very bittersweet. It was one of the few events that never had a high/low benchmark, they just treaded water with great matches that no one noticed. Who's brilliant idea was it to run a show in front of a bunch of drunk bikers? That atmosphere had to make it hard for the wrestlers to call spots.
Guest TheDames7 Report post Posted March 30, 2002 Who's brilliant idea was it to run a show in front of a bunch of drunk bikers? Eric....Bischoff. Dames - Is Feared by Bischoff
Guest MiloMahoney Report post Posted March 30, 2002 I think they booed because they wanted a winner. But i do think they were stupid. But it was cool to see an outside event but the crowds were the shits. Ah Bischoff god bless him.
Guest Tony149 Report post Posted March 30, 2002 I don't think WCW made money off the event. I think the crowd got in free. Which if true...was a stupid business move for WCW to run an event where they wouldn't make money. Then again, it was WCW.
Guest MiloMahoney Report post Posted March 30, 2002 Yeah it was a free show. Luckily they didn't run there for 4 years. Oh wait. They also ran a WCW Saturday night in 95 from a street in Atlanta that they blocked off. God knows why they did THAT. It was also raining so they wrestlers come out and work in a wet ring. You know maybe i DON'T miss Bischoff.
Guest Tony149 Report post Posted March 30, 2002 Yeah, that's the problem running outdoor events. The weather may be bad. I wonder if a wrestling event ever took place where it was raining really bad.
Guest ArkhamGlobe Report post Posted March 30, 2002 I haven't seen the whole card, but that crowd was horrible. I think Bobby Heenan had a pretty good quote on them: <retarded biker voice> "Look honey, I got a beer and an eagle on my back!" I have no idea why I thought that was so funny, alot of it was probably in the delivery.
Guest Report post Posted April 2, 2002 For some reason, when I was younger, a card that was in an outside venue such as WMIX or Hog Wild seemed more "special" to me and all my middle school pals... boy were we retarded... Download Benoit vs Malenko on my server, if you wish...
Guest The Son of Sting Report post Posted April 2, 2002 If that match was indoors with a hot crowd or a knowlegable crowd, ie Canada or a ECW show, it would be considered a classic. It just seems to get forgotten about. Just out of curiosity what rating would you give the match? I have it pegged at ****1/4, could have hit ****3/4 with a hot crowd. I have to say that the crowd for the event was one of the worst ever.
Guest JHawk Report post Posted April 2, 2002 I wonder if a wrestling event ever took place where it was raining really bad. There's a tape floating around where the Killer Bees are wrestling outdoors and it's simply pouring down rain so every spot is blown. WCW's MTV special at Chelsea's Pier was in the middle of a downpour, so only one match even happened and the show was an hour shorter than scheduled because of it. Wasn't one of the World Class Texas Stadium shows in a downpour as well?

Guest Zack Malibu Report post Posted April 3, 2002 I think the "racism" thing was touched upon in Keith's rant on this as well. Basically, you have a crowd of drunken, surly, mostly white biker dudes, in North Dakota. It was just a stereotypical reaction that Harlem Heat got booed. I'm pretty sure they were the only black wrestlers on the show as well. Same would have happened for Goldust or Lenny and Lodi if they did the gay act there. Didn't one of the old Great American Bash's take place in the rain ... I think it was 1985, the year that Flair took on Nikita (also had Road Warriors-Ivan and Krusher, Magnum TA-Kamala, and a whole bunch of other cool matchups)
Guest krambigmac Report post Posted April 3, 2002 That Killer Bees match was on one of the Best of the WWF Tapes. I forgot which one but it was either 6 or 10 and I'm leaning towards 6.

Guest Pegasus Kid Report post Posted April 4, 2002 I've always felt that Benoit vs Malenko was overrated to be honest. I'll grant you the match was very good but after the first time limit expired the match pretty much went to hell. The moves get bigger but the match gets worse. When the second time limit expired I was pretty much yelling "END IT PLEASE!" Then you get a truly shitty pay off with the interference and it leaves a bitter taste in your mouth. The crowd didn't help at all considering they weren't wrestling fans and could care less about two guys they either had never heard of or didn't care about. As for venues in the rain, one that sticks in my mind is Malenko vs Guerrero in ECW from 1995 or so. I can't place the date off the top of my head but I know it was a total drenching.
