Bonds Enters 500-500 Club

Recommended Posts

Guest jimmy no nose

I didn't really think about it until now, but Bonds entered the 500-500 club last night and it might be the only time it's ever done, at least for a long time. I don't think anyone else will make such a transition from speedy leadoff hitter to the most feared power hitter in the game. I think the most homers any other 500 steal guy ever hit was Henderson with 295, and the most stolen bases for another 500 homer guy was Willie Mays with 338. I thought this was a big moment in baseball some of you guys may not have really noticed.

I don't know like baseball at all, but I'm pretty damn sure that Bonds is the only one to enter the 500-500 club. At least that's what Sportscenter told me.

I don't like him, but damn.

Quite the accomplishment...

It's a remarkable accomplishment that isn't likely to be duplicated soon. Of the younger players in the league with power and speed, I'd say Soriano has the best chance to catch him eventually, but that presumes he keeps running as the 40-HR seasons mount. That's another reason this is amazing: most guys, once they're established as middle-of-the-lineup power hitters, stop running. Look at Magglio Ordonez: he had single-digit steals last year, after showing he had the speed and skills to get 25 a year easily.

If Bonds is not a first-ballot HOFer, I propose the HOF be incinerated.

Shit, Bonds should have his own wing.

The question is: Pirates or Giants hat?

What makes it even more amazing is that no other player is even in the 400/400 club, and there are only three (Willie Mays, Bobby Bonds, & Andre Dawson) other members of the 300/300 club! If Bonds isn't the greatest player EVER, I don't know who is.

It's the Giants, but he had 6 years great years in Pittsburgh. 2 or 3 MVP's, and he was maybe a better all around player. Defense, overall hitting, stolen bases.

4 seasons? I'm pretty sure it was 7. It still easily goes to the Giants though. He stole 251 bases in Pittsburgh, but only hit 176 of his homeruns there. His homerun numbers exploded when he left, 46 in his first season as a Giant. His average has also been up as well as his overall power numbers. Actually, I think everything has gone up except stolen bases.

Who are some other players who will inspire tough cap decisions when they're inshrined? Mark McGwire and Roberto Alomar come to mind.

Mark McGwire SHOULD go into the Hall of Fame as a Cardinal, considering this was where he became such a household name.

Alomar obviously should go into the Hall of Fame as a Met. Wait.....what ? He sucks as a Met ? Okay, scratch that then.

Bonds should defiantely go in as a Giant. He won more MVP's, he broke the homer record as a Giant, a baseball stadium was built so that he could launch baseballs into Willie McCovey Cove, he won more Division Crowns as a Giant, he came closest to winning a World Series as a Giant, hit more homers as a Giant, and will more than likely have his number retired at Pac Bell.

Also, throw in the fact that Bonds is from the Bay Area and his Dad and God Father were both great Giants, and you kinda get the feeling that he will be more inclined to enter as a Giant. I believe Bonds became a Hall of Famer in his time as a Giant. Also, throw in the fact that he gets booed every time he steps onto the Pirates home field, and all signs point to him wearing a Giants Cap.

As a Giant's fan, I am keeping my fingers crossed.

He won the title with Oakland...and he considers that an more important accomplishment...

Yup. And he should go in as either a Blue Jay or an Oriole, IMO. His career's gone downhill pretty much since he left Baltimore.

Alomar did win two World Series with Toronto. But he put up big numbers with the Indians and Orioles. On the other hand, he also spat on John Hirchbeck while an Oriole. I say put him in as a Blue Jay.

McGwire - Probably St. Louis, cause he broke the homer record while in St. Louis.

Bonds will probably go in as a Giant. While he was a superstar player as a Pirate, he elevated himself to one of the best of all time while in a San Francisco uniform.

I don't really think Piazza matters much. He didn't do anything really special in either city. No MVPs, ridiculously good year, championships just constant production. So either cap is fine.

As a side note, the Mets are really killing my opinions of players. Seeing Alomar and Piazza on this team is making me question their HOF worthiness when they were great players and are certainly HOF locks. Piazza is the greatest hitting catcher of all time and Alomar was the best 2B for a decade, yet I see them as dead weight on their current team.

Piazza depends on how you look at it. If you compare him to historical catchers, then he is the best hitter of all time. But if you look at him in his own time, there was about 8 great, healthy years which may not be enough time for some voters.

Personally, I would put him in because you have to give catchers a break in regards to longevity. And his offense more than made up for his below average catching ability in those years.

I'd put Piazza in, though I can't speak to which cap.

McGwire, I believe, should go in as a Cardinal. He did win the title in Oakland, sure. But as an individual, he made his name in St. Louis (yes, I know big baseball fans knew of him before that, but think Joe Blow here and even moreso, Mrs. Joe Blow).

Alomar's kind of a toughie. I want to say Blue Jays, but then that kind of runs against my previous statements. But it isn't like he didn't play well in Toronto, nor is he the name that a McGwire is. So, Jays it is.

Bonds as a Giant, of course. He was possibly "leaner and meaner" in Pitt, but no question he was a better player and obviously hitter in San Francisco.

The Marlins for Piazza.

Alomar will go in has a Blue Jay.

A few reasons Alomar has struggled in New York is, he's not a New York type player, he's an American League player. 12 or so years in one league, it's difficult to adjust.

Alomar shouldn't have a logo on his hat: it should be a blank one. He's played for too many teams and I don't think he was that much better in one place than all the others. So, assuming he IS hall of fame worthy, I think that'd be the way to go.

McGwire? It's a pretty tough call, actually. Either hat would be justified. Though if it's the Hall of FAME, it'd be The Cardinal hat, as he is more famous now for his Cardinal stint than his A's stint, and given that he broke the Maris record in St. Louis, as time passes on he'll very likely be more remembered as a Cardinal than an Athletic, even though he broke in as and spent more time as an Athletic. Similar to Reggie Jackson, actually, [and speaking as an A's fan, unfortunately :( ] when you think about it.

Bonds is a Giant in the hall, no question.

Piazza? I think he should go in as a Marlin. The week he played for that team was unforgettable, the stuff myth and legend and movies are made of. ;)

He's only like 2 years away from 3,000 hits. He's virtual lock to make it.

I think the HOF will pick the A's for McGwire. They seem to pick the team a player estabished himself with. McGwire spent 9 years with Oakland.

If it means anyting. Roger Clemens said he overreacted saying he wouldn't appear if he went in has a Red Sox. Hopefully, Clemens figured out that he had some great years in Boston, and this whole contrevorsy can be put to rest.

Know correct me if I'm wrong the following players have these hats. Ruth-Braves, Mays-Mets, Aaron-Brewers, Mathews-Astros, Morgan-A's, Killebrew-Royals, Carlton-Twins. :D
