Guest crandamaniac Report post Posted June 26, 2003 Boom or Bust: Stocks & Playboy Models In a "they-got-paid-for-this?" kind of study, researchers from Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pa., have determined there is a definite link between the health of the U.S. economy and stock market and the type of woman pictured in Playboy centerfolds. Call it the boom or bust theory. After studying the faces and figures of the Playmates of the Year from 1960 to 2000, the hardworking researchers came to this conclusion: In boom economic times, men prefer softer, more vulnerable women. When the economy goes bust, those same men prefer stronger looking gals. (We know what you're thinking. You're wondering how you can do research like this and get paid for it. We're sorry. We have no clue.) "In short, we want someone to have fun with when times are good, and we want someone to take care of us--and themselves--when times are bad," lead researcher Terry F. Pettijohn II told Reuters. He says his study is the first one to consider how social and economic conditions may have influenced the changes in body preferences. This was done through the annual "hard times measure" that tracked changes in U.S. statistics on unemployment, marriage, homicide, and other factors over the four decades studied. Then Professor Pettijohn--and a very lucky undergraduate assistant--precisely measured the key face and body dimensions of the Playboy models. After all this work, the two concluded that when times were tough, the Playmates tended to be older, heavier, and taller with larger waists and bigger waist-to-hip ratios. They also had smaller eyes. When the economy was flush, the models were younger, shorter, and thinner and had smaller waists and bigger eyes. The study was presented at the annual meeting of the American Psychological Society in Atlanta. We have no doubt it was very well attended. I have to say it's fascinating that people actually took time to research something like that. I wonder how they got their grant money tho
