Leafs begin search for new GM

TORONTO - The Toronto Maple Leafs are looking for a new general manager.

Pat Quinn has decided to give up his duo portfolio in order to "focus exclusively on coaching" the team, according to Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment chief Richard Peddie.

"We are not satisfied with our current level of success. We expect more and our fans expect more," said Peddie.

Quinn, who has two years left on his contract, is part of the committee searching for a new GM alongwith Ken Dryden and Peddie.

Peddie also announced that Dryden has been promoted to vice-chairman of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment.

Peddie says the search for a replacement will be "thorough and disciplined" and that the successful candidate will have a "multitude of credentials" and will be "thoroughly versed in all facets of hockey".

The Leafs also confirmed that assistant to the GM Bill Watters will not have his contract renewed when it expires July 1.

"We feel it is appropriate that a new general manager has his own people in place," said Peddie.

Since the sale of outgoing chairman Steve Stavro's shares in Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment to Bell Globemedia, a new board of directors has been running the organization.

They should make a run at Bobby Clarke.

I agree. With a Humvee. The rest of the NHL will thank them...

With the pull Quinn has in the organization, it won't really matter who the GM is. Quinn will still get the player decisions made that he wants made, especially if he holds the GM position through the heart of the summer, when the free agent deals are done.

Expect a rookie GM to be the titular GM while Quinn continues to basically do the job behind the scenes and not have to take the flak for it anymore. Unless Dryden wins the political game behind the scenes and can get a high profile guy in on a big contract, at which point Quinn might have to actually sweat about his own job.

I am assuming that Bill Watters was let go just so the new guy can hire his own assistant, who might just be Bill Watters again.
