Bucks/T-wolves trade

Recommended Posts

Guest alfdogg

Joe Smith and Anthony Peeler for Sam Cassell and Ervin Johnson.

This trade doesn't make much sense to me. The T-Wolves already have two solid PGs (three if you count Terrell Brandon, which I don't because I don't think he'll be back) in Strickland and Hudson, as well as Marc Jackson and Nesterovic to play center. Trading Joe Smith in this deal almost seems like a waste of the T-Wolves two first-round picks from the last couple years.

The Bucks-well, they'd damn sure better hope they can re-sign GP now. I think Ford will be a good PG, but if GP doesn't come back, he's basically in the same situation as Wagner and Jay Williams were last year. Difference is, this is a playoff team, not only that, but one some said would knock out the Nets in the playoffs this year. And much like Minnesota with their PGs, the Bucks already have a solid frontcourt without trading for Smith.

Great trade for both teams.

Bucks have improved by getting rid of Cassell's selfishness and huge contract.

Payton, Peeler, Thomas, Smith, X > Cassell, Redd, Thomas, Kukoc, Johnson.

Good deal for the Wolves too. They get a 7 footer to guard Shaq and some consistent offense to help KG and Wally.

Good deal.

They could also get a Brad Miller for cheap through free agency.

Does Ervin Johnson have any experience at playing PF? To me the T-Wolves got the better deal, Sam Cassell is the type of PG that the T-Wolves need, he can get 15 assist in a game or score 20.

Smith, Brandon, Strickland were always injuried proned.

I think it's a great trade too. At least for the Timberwolves. They finally get a true second scorer to give Garnett some help in Cassell. Cassell may be an asshole but he can play.

Where are the Timberwolves good PGs? Brandon's career is over, Strickland can barely walk, is only a shell of his former self even when he's healthy and will probably be done in the next year or two, Hudson only had a couple of good games against the Lakers and was average at best the rest of the time. Cassell could out-play all three of those guys at once probably.

Ervin Johnson is a decent enough center. I'd rather have him than Joe Smith. And since there's a good chance that Nesterovic will leave via free agency this summer, it was smart to replace him.

As far as the Bucks, it makes no sense. It doesn't make them better OR worse. It seemed that the Bucks were fixing to blow the team up and start over with young guys, but then they trade for two "young" guys like Peeler and Smith? But they needed to get Cassell off so maybe it was the best deal they could get.

Erving will share center duties with Nesterovic and Mark Jackson. KG and Gary Trent will have the PF duties covered. Now all they need to do is trade Brandon and get a small forward who is athletic and can play D...Corey Maggette comes to mind or Darius Miles, who is a good friend of KG's.

Joe Smith is not that old and he has the worker mentality that could flourish in a George Karl system. Anthony Mason is a guy that they should get rid of.

I think they might move Hudson over to 2 guard now.

Without question. Hell, I just did that in NBA 2K3.

The Wolves still plan on trading Brandon. The Pacers, Blazers, and Bulls have been rumored.

The Bucks have already said Peeler won't be resigned and will be a free agent.

ESPN Insider's NBA Depth Chart has...

5 - Nesterovic (If he doesn't leave)

4 - Trent

3 - Garnett

2 - Szczerbiak

1 - Cassell

That's exactly what I would've said as well. Putting Hudson at 2 makes no sense. 1. He'd be a much a better fit being the sparkplug energizer bunny that comes off the bench to pick the team up when it's starting to drag. 2. He's way too small to be an ineffective starting off guard in the NBA. 3. Then you would have 4 guys in your lineup that all need the ball to be effective. I'd rather just have the offense revolve around Cassell, Szczerbiak and Garnett while letting Trent and Nesterovic focus on the dirty work, defense and rebounding.

I don't think there's a chance at all that the Wolves sign Maggette. Other teams will be able to offer him a lot more money and the Wolves' main focus will now be on trying to resign Neserovic who already turned down a 6 year deal from them once before. If they end up having to pay a bundle to keep him, they won't have money left over for a player like Maggette. I'm pretty sure that Cassell IS their big off season addition this year and this will be it. And if they DO sign a free agent they need another PF because the only one they have their roster right now is Gary Trent. Ebi isn't going to play for 2 or 3 years down the road. Small forward seems pretty secure with Garnett, Gill and Szczerbiak all able to rotate in and out there. PF is the thing they need most. Sure Garnett can play it when he has to but it'd be much better on him if they could keep him at SF to let some other guys play the PF position and get beat up down low so he can focus on his finese game.

Man... it must suck to be Vern.

I like this trade for the Wolves. Cassell can be a headache but he's score and play the point. Johnson is a nice rebounder of the bench. Most Wolves fans are glad Peeler, and Smith are gone. Peeler was way too streaky, and Smith was a bust. The Wolves gave up 4 first round picks for a guy who averaged 12-7 and was hurt most of the time.

Cassell is only a headache on a losing team. He's a guy that just wants to win and he can't stand other having other players around him that don't play with that same desire. He wasn't a headache when he was winning back to back titles was he? He's only been a headache since being on this shitty Bucks team with an even shittier coach.

Speaking of Smith -- is the T-Wolves punishment for that fiasco involving him over now, or do they still have some more draft picks to lose?...

Guest Smell the ratings!!!

This is a good trade for the T Wolves, because they got rid of two eh players and got a good player.

For the Bucks it's just a salary dump, because Jordan will want to assemble a whole new roster himself, then quit in 3 years leaving the Bucks in a bizzare state of "perma-rebuilding"

Nope. They don't have next years first round pick.

Strickland is a free agent this Tuesday and he won't be resigned by the Wolves.

The T-Wolves would be best suited to re-signing Nestorovic. He's not the best big man, but he isn't bad either.

What if Gary Payton doesn't resign with the Bucks? Then you would have TJ Ford starting, and that would not be better than Cassell. This trade is essentially for Joe Smith and cash, Joe Smith is worthless. The cash is good, but are any big name FAs going to give Milwaukee a second look?

Minnesota shouldn't rush into signing Nesterovic. I think they should make a play for Olowakandi first. Kandi has never set the world on fire, but he is solid. Playing next to KG could bring his game up.

Kandi is a decent center but the Wolves should save their $$$ on KG who is due for an extention next year.

I don't think it'd make any difference. I seriously doubt that the team will give Garnett a pay raise. He'll probably stay the same or maybe even take a cut. Can they really go higher than 25 million a year? I doubt it.

They signed that deal under the agreement with the Owners and Player's union. I don't think you can get more then 10 mil. a year now, and that's only if you resign with the same team, or work a sign and trade. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I keep reading about Jason Kidd for sure getting a max contract and it being 10 mil. a year from the Nets.

I was thinking that too but I don't know how it works. Webber resigned with the Kings after the new CBA didn't he? He's make 14 million a year.

You can only get a percentage raise over your last contract. Your max is determined by what you were getting paid before, basically.

Kevin McHale was saying the Spurs and Nuggets don't have has much money has people think they do.Those would be the two teams who could give him a big contract on the market. Which is why he hinted the Wolves might wait and offer Rasho the 4.7 exception, or let him walk.

Minnesota Timberwolves: "This definitely is just a beginning,'' team owner Glen Taylor told the Pioneer Press shortly after trading Joe Smith and Anthony Peeler to the Milwaukee Bucks for Sam Cassell and Ervin Johnson. "We've got a lot more work to do." Even with Johnson on the roster, the Timberwolves are concerned about incumbent center Rasho Nesterovic who is drawing interest from Toronto and New York even though Minnesota would love to talk to Alonzo Mourning. "I think we just want to know where we sit with Rasho," Taylor said. "But Rasho's our No. 1, so that's what we prefer to do." Of course, Terrell Brandon's name came up over the weekend. "We've got a deal that we can do,'' Taylor said. "We're just seeing if we can get it better, or if there are a couple of other deals that might be better. We've got a couple of other teams that have asked us to wait and see. Each deal gives us about three players, but we want a starter, and (with) the other two we're just helping the other team out. So they've got to be good bench guys for us. I think we've got to be patient on the Terrell thing."
