Guest INXS Report post Posted June 28, 2003 In August, Chino Moreno of Deftones said the following about Korn's Jonathan Davis in Revolver Magazine: "As they go on, it's the same thing — bad childhoods and mean moms. How old is Jonathan? Thirty years old? How long has it been since he lived with his parents? Try to go somewhere else." In reply, Davis called up 92.3 K-ROCK in New York yesterday and said the following: "I don't hate Chino at all. He's just a bitter guy. He's been bitter since the time when we all started back in '92 [and] we were all homies." Davis went on to say that Chino never accepted that Korn went on to multi-platinum success while the Deftones have yet to reach the same heights. As for Korn's upcoming new album, Davis said the following: "Sometimes, we gauge heavy different than other people. [but] this time it's gonna blow people's heads off." The Deftones lyrics have an eccentricity to me that I enjoy, while Korn's are just typical numetal garbage. Guest Mindless_Aggression Report post Posted June 28, 2003 I'll have to go with the Deftones, good lyrical content and a singer who can ya know sing, instead of relying on cookie monster vocals or death metal growls. Not saying Davis uses the death metal growls, just noting my annoyance of the overuse of them. The same basic theme runs through every single Korn song. Jon Davis is mad, he is angry, he is hurt, he is sad. I'm not saying you gotta change subject matter or whatever, but I'm begging you to try and right it a different way instead of just expressing it throgh a series of f-bombs and pained howls. I LOVE both bands but both Chino and Jonothon are pretty much true in their "barbs" Korn has become repetitve in their themes and deftones are bitter..chino thought he would be a rock god by this point not 4th on the depth chart on summer sanitarium Korn will probably get like that come the next album...they used to imply they were above something like the ozzfest after they hit it big and now look here they are..opening for ozzy again (which they hadnt done since the end of the 1st album tour).. they ahd to discount tons of tickets for the last tour last summer/fall to try and sell more in volume Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I'm 100% sure Chino would rather be where he is now with the Deftones, than number 1 in the charts, writing songs that only 14 year old angsty teenagers can identify with. The Deftones will never be as popular as Korn or Linkin Park, because people don't really know what to make of them, especially people in the mainstream. Chino has always been outspoken and regularly speaks his mind, why the hell would he be bitter because Korn are more popular? The Deftones have shown growth and experimentation through their 4 albums. Korn on the other hand have shown absolutely none. Now I can fully understand that the Deftones don't appeal to everyone on this board, they're an acquired taste. I totally see where people are coming from when they say they don't like Chino's voice. Say what you want, but there is no-one that I can think of who has such a unique voice as Chino has. Chino has something about him as well, something Jon Davis doesn't have, something Fred Durst doesn't have. He's awesome on stage and gushes personality. I went to see the Deftones in Manchester last month, and I was simply blown away. They played for over 2 hours and Chino had the crowd in the palm of his hand. There was a girl in the front row with a Slipknot t-shirt on, and upon noticing her he remarked ' There's nothing more attractive than a girl in a Slipknot T-shirt'. In closing, when the NuMetal trend has finally run it's course, and it appears to be close to doing so. Deftones will still be around doing things their way, I wouldn't be so sure about Korn though. Their set was long, dragged endlessly, their sound check was TERRIBLE, and everyone played lazy and drunk, repeatedly whining and whimpering. Truly terrible, and something I never want to see again. But on that night in Manchester they were on top of their game for whatever reason, and it truly was a memorable night, for me anyway. But I'm a huge fan maybe I'm biased. Because he talked about Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit too. All he did was bitch about having to open for those two bands that "wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the Deftones." You ask why he would be jealous of Korn? 1. He thinks he's better than they are. 2. He believes they wouldn't exist without him. 3. Their records go platinum, his go wood. My first thought after reading that article is that it's pure jealousy. It's like saying "why do we have to open for these bands when we're sooooo much better than they are?" If it's true or not is another discussion but it's just dumb to say that and it comes off as petty jealousy. Hell, I've seen dozens of bands that have never even SNIFFED a major label deal who are better than all 4 bands on this bill combined. Him and his band manage to somehow get the opening slot on this huge tour that many other bands would kill to have but all he can do is attack the other 3 bands. (He also went off on Metallica, calling them a terrible live band that do nothing but stand still and play. I hate Metallica and even I wouldn't say that. I've always thought that one thing they did right was play live.) Why SHOULDN'T the Deftones be opening is the big question? Why should they be headliners? Let's see, the other bands are Linkin, Limp and Metallica. Hmmm, those others band have sold millions of records and had several hit singles and sold out arenas around the world. The Deftones have accomplished two things in the music business. Jack and shit. They should be happy about where they are and feel honored that they're as big as they are and that they get to play on this tour in front of millions of people instead of bitching about it. His claim that all those other bands wouldn't exist without him is so stupid that it doesn't even need to be commented on. When I read that, I think the guy is either jealous, or he's just making a lame attempt at saying something shocking to get his name in the headlines. They do have 3 platinum albums with a sound that is hardly any form of radio /typical rarrrr metal head friendly, so I'd say they have accomplished more than jack and or shit. But back to Chino, he is hardly an angry metal guy. The Deftones aren't even a metal band and outside of the first CD, most of their stuff is pretty much teenage angst free. They actually grew a little, unlike the Korns of the world. Somehwat comparable to random Mike Patton projects, not necessarily in sound, but in spirit. Which is probably why Mike likes them.
