Ring Of Honor returned to the Murphy Recreation Center in South Philly on June 28th for a night that will be remembered for a series of great matches and a rave that went on long into the night. However, the most newsworthy events might have happened behind the scenes.

There was some kind of altercation between Low Ki, Homicide and Julius Smokes in the locker room. There were also other members of Homicide's street crew seen in the locker room. Exactly what happened will be documented on the home release of this event. Pre-orders are being taken now at RFVideo.com or by calling 215-891-9404. This show will be released by July 19th.

The Showcase Card saw: Benny from Da Bronx beat Lit; Angel Dust beat Hydro in a battle of Special K members; Christopher Street Connection beat Outcast Killazs.

The main show opened with Dunn & Marcos scoring their first ever win as they beat Prince Nana & Jimmy Jact Cash.

Alexis Laree defeated Sumie Sakai in the best women's match in ROH history. This bout had the crowd on its feet.

Chad Collyer beat Matt Stryker in a tap out match when Stryker tapped to the Texas cloverleaf for the third time in ROH. Collyer replaced Tom Carter who couldn't make it, but had a very valid reason. This was a pure wrestling clinic. After the match Collyer told Stryker that making him submit was too easy and he was going to pin him on 7/19 in Elizabeth, NJ. Stryker said he would win by pinfall. As a result, Collyer vs. Stryker at "Death Before Dishonor" will be the first ever pins only match.

Carnage Crew of Loc, Devito & Justin Credible defeated Izzy, Dixie & Deranged of Special K when Credible pinned Dixie after that's incredible. Credible was a complete surprise. This one provided plenty of action. Mikey Whipwreck was unable to make it and had a very valid reason.

Samoa Joe retained the ROH world title by defeating "The Prophecy's Assassin" Danny Maff after a dragon suplex. This was a hard-hitting, emotional contest.

BJ Whitmer opened the second half by winning a Four Corner Survival that inclu ded Tony Mamaluke, Jimmy Jacobs and Alex Shelley. Whitmer pinned Jacobs in a match that saw some incredible moves. Newcomers Jacobs and Shelley definitely impressed and won over the crowd.

The Second City Saints of CM Punk & Colt Cabana with Lucy Furr defeated Raven & Chris Daniels with Allison Danger in a bloody match. The Raven vs. Punk feud reached a new level of hatred after Raven was pinned by Punk. To add insult to injury, Punk choked out Raven with a chain after the match. Raven challenged Punk to a dog collar match at "Death Before Dishonor" in what could be the final chapter of this ROH original feud.

AJ Styles kept the NWA world heavyweight title by defeating Chris Sabin in another excellent athletic contest. Styles gave a speech talking about the NWA title and the tradition of that belt was honored at the Murphy Recreation Center in a ROH ring.

Trent Acid defeated Homicide in a brutal match that included ladders and tables. Both men took unbelievable risks and pulled off incredible moves in this one. Words can't do it justice.

After the match, the lights went out and when they came on Deranged and Izzy of Special K put The Backseat Boyz of Acid & Johnny Kashmere through a table. As ring announcer Stephen D'Angelis announced the show was over, Special K took over the building and started a rave that continued as the crowd emptied into the streets. The rave saw Special K members dance in the ring with unknown raver girls and dance all over the building in a wild, party scene. This is why you have to experience ROH live!!!

The Ring of Honor Trip Report

On December 28th- I first discovered and became a fan of Ring of Honor. It’s kind of funny that I became a fan of the promotion when they ran what many consider to be their worst show but I had a great time and soon took interest in the promotion. Living up in Toronto I didn’t get a chance to experience more ROH but finally I had come home to NY and was ready to see their last Philly show of the summer on June 28th.

I got to the show using Wrestling Bus Trips. They’re a company run by Mike Johnston (he writes for 1bob) that provides transportation to Ring of Honor and other big indies out of New York. On the way to the show we watched an NWA comp of 1989. It was fun being on the bus with a bunch of hardcore wrestling fans and instead of watching the show we discussed wrestling and in the time honoured Ring of Honor bus trip tradition- made fun of Konnan. If you live in the NYC area but don’t feel like driving to Philly- I strongly recommend Wrestling Bus Trips. It’s $45 (includes a GA ticket) and everyone is very friendly and you soon make friends very fast. Their site is- wrestlingbustrips.com

We arrived in Philly and were greeted with an on bus cameo by Rob Feinstein. The minute he got on the bus my friend yelled: WHERE ARE MY TAPES?? Rob was caught off guard and said: They’ll be in the mail. He thanked us for coming to the show and then asked what talent we would like to see. Jamal and Bull Buchanan did not seem like names that Rob wanted to book. He told me Kid Kash is hard to work with and he said he’s trying to get Skipper but I think he has a high asking price. They were going to a Funker v. Corino match but MLW beat them to it. Every other time they’ve tried to book Funk- it’s fallen through.

After a quick stop at Tony Luke’s (where I met Monster Mack, Deranged and Fat Frank we arrived at the Murphy Rec Centre- truly the mecca of professional wrestling. While waiting for the doors to open I met Prince Nana and Simply Luscious. Simply Luscious is very hot in person. The doors finally went in and I was ready for Ring of Honor until I saw a sign that frightened me: NO FOOD OR REFRESHMENTS ALLOWED.

The Murphy Rec Centre is infamous for its lack of air conditioning so I had brought 4 frozen bottles of water to not die. They were searching bags and I was afraid all my water would be gone. But somehow I managed to slip by security and I was able to sneak my water in. TAKE THAT ROB!

After securing a seat I hung out in the lobby- where all the merchandising is. To my shock I noticed Christopher Daniels hanging out. He was pimping his merchandise but was signing and taking pictures for free. He told me he didn’t know how long he was going to be in Japan for but he confirmed he won’t be in TNA this week. I picked up a copy of Epic Encounter (London v. Dragon!!!!!) and got it signed. After Daniels I saw the Second City Saints hanging out in the lobby. CM Punk is a very weird man.

Me: Hey there CM Punk.

Punk: Hey there a fan.

I gave him my copy of Epic Encounter to sign and he signed ‘Spanky’ right over Spanky’s face. Punk: That’s an authentic right there. I then told him my friend was straight edge and he just looks at me and goes: And you’re not? I don’t know if Punk was kayfabing or what but it was definetley an interesting experience. I also ran into Sumie Sakai.

The Showcase card then began. The Pennsylvania Athletic Commission got their usual heel heat.

The first match saw Lit beat some dude I didn’t know. Match was nothing. After the match I yelled to jobber: YOU SUCK. He replied: Yea- well you swallow!

Hydo v. Angeldust was the next match and it was really good. At first they were reluctant to fight but then they kicked it into high gear and a good match resulted. Hydro won.

Christopher Street Connection beat the Outcast Killahs. The CSC are hilarious and this was a fun comedy match. The CSC can sure chop the shit out of people though. They are being underused in ROH as the crowd loves them and they’re really hilarious.

Then- it was showtime.

One perk about ROH is that if you stand by the entranceway- when the wrestlers come out they’ll slap your hand and stuff. It may not sound cool but it’s always fun just interacting with them in some form. So at the end of every match I would run over to the entranceway and stake my spot so I could catch them leaving and coming out.

The ring announcer announced that Tom Carter (Wife went into labour) and Mikey Whipwreck (???) were not at the show. Carter v. Stryker was changed to Collyer v. Stryker and Tony Mamaluke was inserted into the 4-way at the expense of Johnny Kashmere.

Dunn and Marcos v. Prince Nana and ??? was up first. The match was nothing and a bit sloppy but DUNN AND MARCOS WON A MATCH. Truly a markout moment for any ROH fan.

Alexis Laree (oh yea- she slapped my hand) v. Sumie Sakai was up next. This was one of the best chick matches I’ve ever seen. Sumie’s only other match was against Simply Luscious and well she’s a Gayda. This time she got to work against someone who kind of knows what they’re doing. Sumie had the crowd eating out of the palm of her hand. She would pull Alexis’ hair and wait for the ref to count to 4 and then switch hands. They also did a very cool sequence where they kept reversing near falls. Sumie’s yells: AHSHD HSHFHSAS were also really funny. Alexis won the match in the end. I’d like to see more of Sumie in ROH.

Matt Stryker v. Chad Collyer in a tap out match was next. This was a very long but good match. My usual complaints about these guys were in effect. They just have no charisma. Collyer got the win with the Cloverleaf. He wasn’t big on shaking hands after the match- a travesty so big that Gary Michael Cappeta had to come out and wonder why this was so.

Collyer said that everytime he faces Stryker he ends up making tap like a bitch. Stryker pointed out that he made him tap out in a 5-way in a while back which prompted Collyer to say: It took FOUR people to do it though! Sadly- Collyer’s voice CRACKED when he said four and he said it in such a high pitched squeal that the crowd started laughing their asses off. The end result was a pinfalls only match at 7.19 between the two.

The Carnage Crew v. Special K

Justin Credible got a MONSTER pop coming out- the place went nuts. This was a fun match as everyone did their spots. Izzy did a spectacular dive over the top rope. At the beginning Credible was beating the hell out of Deranged and he yelled: I don’t want to fight him- he hits too hard! The Carnage Crew got the win and this was the perfect match to pump the crowd up.

Samoa Joe v. Danny Maff was next. Maff’s father had died the night before but he still wanted to wrestle. They gave his father a 10 bell salute. Maff looked very upset coming out and pointed to the sky. The crowd was very receptive and gave him a standing ovation. The match was very good and better then I thought it would be. Maff gave it his all out there which was admirable given the circumstances. They did some brawling on the outside which led to a BOOTSCRAPE!~ Samoa Joe ended up blocking the Burning Hammer and hitting a suplex for the win. After the match Joe quickly left the ring so Maff could have the moment. The crowd gave him another standing ovation- it was a truly emotional moment.

Thank you Danny Maff. You went out there under the gravest of circumstances and still gave it your all. That takes a lot of heart and courage- I’m very glad the receptive was to him.

During intermission I met Sumie Sakai again. Me: Sumie- You were very good out there. The match ruled. Sumie just looked at me. Me: You were great tonight. Sumie: Yes.

Intermission soon ended and the 4-way began. Jimmy Jacobs has this gimmick where he come s out with his right around his left arm and his left hand held up to his face and he yells: HUSS! HUSS! He’s just like the Berzerker and the gimmick was way over. At one point he did a sick bump and the crowd chanted: HOLY HUSS! HOLY HUSS! He did another high flying spot and in a nod to Paul London we chanted: PLEASE DON’T HUSS! PLEASE DON’T HUSS! B.J. Whitmer is nasty up close- his forehead is full of blade scars. The match was awesome as everyone looked great out there. Whitmer got the win by pinning Jacobs.

Raven and Daniels v. The Second City Saints was the next match. Raven just seems larger then life when he’s in Ring of Honor- he just has this aura about him. Dafney from WCW accompanied the SCS- she looks great. This was a fine tag team formula match. Raven again failed to hit the Raven effect on Punk as Lucy (a.k.a. Dafney) saved him. This led to a CATFIGHT between Lucy and Danger. Punk tapped an artery- blood was coming out of his mouth. Daniels also gigged. Punk got another win over Raven and then choked him out with a chain. This is becoming Dreamer v. Raven II. After the match Raven coughed up some bile and challenged Punk to a dog collar match at Death Before Dishonor.

AJ v. Sabin was next. AJ came out to Flair’s music which got him a good ovation. This was a great match but only went 10 minutes. Styles got the win with the Styles Clash. Afterwards Styles cut a promo and mentioned Douglas throwing the belt in the trash. He promised to respect the title and hoped that we respect the title as much as he respected us.

It was main event time. They made sure to change the ring to show how this was a Fight Without Honor match and was not sanctioned by Ring of Honor. This was insane. Homicide and Acid did many cringeworthy spots. Homicide gave him a double cutter from the top rope through a table ON THE OUTSIDE. Acid was pushed off a ladder to the floor below in another sick bump. Acid got the win with a rollup in a match that also included interference from Johnny Kashmere (He was chased off by Julius Smokes).

The Backseats were celebrating when out comes Special K! Special K cleaned house and put both Backseats through a table. Then a bunch of hot girls came out and it was the very first Ring of Honor rave. This was a blast. They migrated to a section of the arena and they were dancing with all the fans. The girls were dancing with each other as I’m sure Eric Bischoff was in heaven. Deranged jumped off the rail into a big mosh pit at one point as everyone was having the time of their lives. Hey- I don’t mind stupid endings if it involves me dancing with hot girls.

I think they did that ending because they wanted to leave Philadelphia (they won’t be back for 3 months) on a high note and do a very fan friendly ending.

After the show I saw Lucy but soon had to get back on the bus where it was Q-n-A time with Samoa Joe. Samoa Joe was an awesome Q-n-A as he was very forthcoming and talked about shoot fighting and wrestling in Japan. He told me his favourite match was v. Homicide from 5.31. He said he had been in contact with Jerry Jarrett and said he would go to WWE as long as he didn’t have to change his style. I can’t transcribe everything he said but he was a great guest.

On the way back we hit traffic so we didn’t get into Manhattan until 3 am- so it was an 11 hour trip overall.

I had a blast going to Ring of Honor- if you ever have a chance to go- DO SO. If you live in New York or Boston they regularly run bus trips to Ring of Honor shows. I will be attending Death Before Dishonor on July 19th and I will file a report then.

I think I might have to get this tape strictly for the Rave. Sounds fun.
