Rebooking the 90's -

 

               January 7, 1990 - Superstars of Wrestling

 

Earthquake Vs. Brooklyn Brawler - *

 

  Earthquake scores the victory in a squash with "the tremors".

 

Earthquake Interview -

 

  Earthquake announces his being in the 1990 Royal Rumble matchup.

 

Hulk Hogan Interview -

 

  Hogan talks with Okerlund about the title match against Jake Roberts.

 

Commercial Break

 

Gorilla Monsoon Announcement -

 

  Gorilla hears that tomorrow night there will be a battle royale for the number one contendership to Hulk Hogan's belt at The Royal Rumble.

 

Ronnie Garvin Vs. Dusty Rhodes - **

 

  Rhodes missed the elbow drop, Garvin takes advantage and finally locks in the figure four leg-lock to score the submission. Following the match Dusty attacks Garvin to turn heel.

 

Dusty Rhodes Interview -

 

  Rhodes challenges Garvin to a fight at Royal Rumble.

 

Hulk Hogan Vs. Jake Roberts - *1/2

 

  Hulk Hogan fights back after avoiding the big DDT and Randy Savage's interference and scores the big boot leg drop combination to retain his heavyweight title.

 

Randy Savage Interview -

 

  Savage says he's going to win the battle royale at Madison Square Garden and go into The Royal Rumble and win the belt, cause Hogan will feel the wrath of Machomania.

                   WWF House Show - January 8, 1990

 

Intercontinental Title: Randy Savage Vs. The Ultimate Warrior - ***1/2

 

  Warrior and Savage go back and forth, Earl Hebner gets knocked out. Savage is able to secure the victory after nailing his opponent with the Intercontinetnal Title belt. The decision was later changed to a DQ win for The Ultimate Warrior following Hebner discovering what happened.

 

Warrior/Savage Segment -

 

  The Warrior challenges Savage to finish this. Savage exploits the injury of The Warrior courtesy of the title belt earlier hits the flying elbow to score the one, two, three. The title does not change hands as the match was not sanctioned by the WWF.

 

Ronnie Garvin Vs. Ted Dibiase - **1/2

 

  Ted Dibiase asks Garvin to just give him the night off, and he'll be rewarded with cash as Dibiase doesn't want to mess up his air. Garvin tells him to go to hell. The match is back and forth, Virgil interferes but it backfires. Ronnie Garvin locks on the figure four and scores the pin with it.

 

WWF World Title: Hulk Hogan Vs. The Brooklyn Brawler - 1/2*

 

  Hulk Hogan pins the Brooklyn Brawler in a squash via the big boot and the leg drop.

 

Number One Contender - WWF Title: Battle Royale - ****1/2

 

  The match comes down to Rick Rude, Randy Savage, Brutus Beefcake, and Lanny Poffo. Beefcake is eliminated by Lanny Poffo. The Ultimate Warrior runs into the ring and is able to get Savage eliminated from the battle royale. Rude hits the Rude Awakening and tosses Lanny Poffo over the top rope to secure the victory and the number one contendership for Hulk Hogan's belt at Wrestlemania.

 

Rick Rude Interview -

 

  Rude says that the crowd are a bunch of sweathogs and they have just seen what a real man can do and that at The Royal Rumble he is going to defeat Hulk Hogan to become the World Wrestling Federation champion.

                   WWF House Show - January 11, 1990

 

Earthquake Vs. Tim Horner - 1/2*

 

  Earthquake wins a total squash in about ten seconds here.

 

Mr. Perfect/Honky Tonk Man Vs. The Bushwhackers - **

 

  The match goes back and forth. The referee was at one point out cold. Honky Tonk Man knocked out Bushwhacker Butch with his guitar allowing Mr. Perfect to score the pinfall over Luke with the Perfectplex.

 

The Big Bossman Vs. Randy Savage - No Rating

 

  Match really doesn't start. Savage just snaps and beats Bossman down with a steel chair. Bossman is laying in a pool of his own blood shouting at Randy Savage as Savage leaves.

 

The Hart Foundation Vs. Ted Dibiase/Rick Martel - ***3/4

 

  The match goes back and forth. Several near finishes resulting in very long two counts. Hot tags on both sides, the crowd was really into this one.  Hart finished Martel with the superplex into a cradle.

 

Dibiase/Martel Segment

 

  Dibiase and Martel get into a fight with each other that starts with some shoving and ended up becoming a full blown brawl. Dibiase escaped as Martel looked on angrily.

 

Cage Match: Jim Duggan Vs. Rick Rude - **1/2

 

  Rude brought the goods on the heels of the big battler royale a few nights prior. Rude was not able to score the victory after his first Rude Awakening but as the match progressed and Duggan was outlasted it was time for a fantastic maneuver. Duggan was hit with the Rude Awakening from halfway up the cage for the escape.

            WWF Superstars of Wrestling - January 14, 1990

 

Highlights - MSG Battle Royale

 

  It is announced that Rick Rude won the battle royale and highlights of it are shown.

 

Jim Neidhart Vs. Tugboat - 1/2*

 

  Neidhart fights back after some punches and a missed avalanche and hits the shoulder block for the finish.

 

Jim Neidhart Interview -

 

  Neidhart asks for a match against Earthquake later on tonight, after Earthquake's match against Jim Duggan.

 

Intercontinental Title: Ronnie Garvin Vs. The Ultimate Warrior - **1/2

 

  The match goes back and forth but Warrior makes the last second comeback. He hits the gorilla press and goes for his big splash for the finish but Garvin rolls away. Warrior damages his ribs and as Garvin is crawling to his feet Savage climbs to the top rope and drops an elbow across the chest of The Warrior causing the DQ.

 

Randy Savage Interview -

 

  Savage says that he wants to face Warrior at The Rumble. The Warrior appears out of seemingly nowhere and says that he definitely accepts the challenge but wonders if Savage is up to the Ultimate Challenge.

 

Commercial Break -

 

Earthquake Interview -

 

  Earthquake says that he is fine with destroying two men tonight and beating down The Anvil will be his pleasure.

 

Earthquake Vs. Jim Duggan - *

 

  Duggan goes for some wild brawling to start things off but Earthquake easily slams him to the mat and hits "the tremors" for the pinfall.

 

Jim Neidhart Interview -

 

  Neidhart is standing out at the top of the entrance way. He trash talks Earthquake some and then runs toward the ring.

 

Jim Neidhart Vs. Earthquake - No Rating

 

  The match evolves into a wild brawl within thirty seconds ending with both men fighting on the floor and a double countout declared as the show goes off the air.

            WWF Superstars of Wrestling - January 21, 1990

 

Ultimate Warrior Segment -

 

  Ultimate Warrior is seen walking around in the back wearing his wrestling attire beating his chest and screaming wildly.

 

Jim Neidhart and Tugboat Vs. Earthquake and Dino Bravo

 

  Bravo and Earthquake start off with the advantage as they work on Tugboat. Tugboat fights back and gets the tag to Neidhart. Neidhart knocks out Bravo with the shoulder block and goes for Earthquake who escapes out of the ring. Neidhart pins Bravo for the win.

 

Earthquake Interview -

 

  Earthquake challenges Jim Neidhart to a match at Royal Rumble.

 

Intercontinental Title: Ultimate Warrior Vs. Rick Martel - ***

 

  Martel has the advantage. Warrior makes his famed comeback. Martel finds himself unable to hurt the Warrior who goes for the Gorilla Press. Martel sneaks out the back and sneaks in a lowblow that the referee doesn't catch. Martel gets a suplex to put Warrior down. Savage tries to interfere to save Warrior's swings the title belt but instead of hitting Martel it hits a just getting up Warrior as Sherri distracts the referee. Martel locks on the Boston Crab. Earl Hebner finds no consciousness in The Warrior and therefore Martel becomes Intercontinental Champion.

 

Bret Hart Interview -

 

  Bret says that even though Jim has his business to take care of, he'll be alright because he wants a match at the Royal Rumble too and he doesn't care who it's against... As Bret is about to walk off Mr. Perfect walks up and says that he'd be more than ready to prove that utter perfection can beat simple excellence every single day of the week. They have a stare down as we go to commercial.

Dusty Rhodes Interview -

 

  Dusty makes sure to hype up the match in seven days against Ronnie Garvin. Dusty says that Garvin may be great but Dusty is a legend and there's no disputing that and that he's going to teach Garvin a lesson.

 

WWF World Title: Hulk Hogan Vs. Nikolai Volkoff - *

 

  Hogan took the early advantage. Volkoff fought back but really couldn't mount much offense before Hogan got angry and Hulked up. Hogan hit the big boot and the leg drop to score the pin and retain the belt.

Highlight show hyping the night's Royal Rumble. [No Matches]

 

Neidhart/Earthquake Video Package -

Garvin Interview -

 

  Garvin says that this is really his chance to prove himself to the WWF fans and that when he's through with Rhodes he's heading in to the main event, The Royal Rumble matchup to win and get his shot against Hulk Hogan.

 

Rick Martel Interview -

 

  Martel gloats about becoming the new Intercontinental Champion. He says that The Warrior should have known never to mess with a superior athlete like himself. At this point The Warrior walks into the room and demands his return match. Martel reminds him that he has another twenty-three days til' he has to defend his belt because of the thirty day clause and there's not a thing the Warrior can do about it. Warrior screams and walks off.

Randy Savage Interview -

 

  Savage says that letting Martel win the belt was a mistake but there will no longer be any mistakes as tonight he is going to defeat The Ultimate Warrior in the middle of the ring and go on to win the thirty man Royal Rumble matchup and no one is going to stop him, ooooh yeah.

 

Hulk Hogan/Rick Rude Video Package -

 

Rick Rude Interview -

 

  Rude is in the back with Bobby Heenan. Rude says that Hogan may call himself a Real American but he is a real man and tonight he's going to prove that the fans don't mean anything and no matter how much energy they give him... in the end it won't matter cause he'll be WWF Champion.

                 Royal Rumble 1990 - January 28, 1990

 

Royal Rumble Video Package -

 

Jim Neidhart Vs. Earthquake - *

 

  Earthquake takes down Neidhart quickly and goes for the finish. Neidhart rolls out of the way and goes for the shoulder block. Earthquake avoids it and a stunned Neidhart hits the ring post. Neidhart falls to the mat and falls victim to "the tremors" for the three count.

 

Dusty Rhodes Interview -

 

  Dusty says that he is going to win the match against Ronnie Garvin because he is a hard workin' man that refuses to let a fluke repeat itself.

 

Dusty Rhodes Vs. Ronnie Garvin - **

 

  Dusty takes the advantage to start off the fight. Garvin fights back and gets the figure four. Dusty grabs the ropes. Garvin tries to wear down Dusty but he fights back with his elbows. Match goes back and forth before a bionic elbow finishes it and Rhodes is the winner.

 

Mr. Perfect Interview -

 

  Perfect says that he's going to continue his winning ways at the Royal Rumble, because Bret may be excellent... but he's PERFECT.

 

Mr. Perfect Vs. Bret Hart - ****1/2

 

  Tremendous technical wrestling all the way throughout this one. Hart kicks out of a perfectplex and Perfect is able to get to the ropes while in a sharpshooter. The match continues going back and forth before the referee goes to the mat and Perfect hits a chairshot to the stomach of Hart. He follows it up with a perfectplex but no referee is available to count it. The referee gets up and Perfect is quickly rolled up in a schoolboy for the two. The match goes back and forth again, finally Perfect gets a roll-up while holding the tights for a three count.

 

Randy Savage Interview -

 

  Savage declares tonight to be the start of a new era, the era where Hogan and Warrior are forgotten and Machomania is running wild because he's going to not only win against the Warrior, he's looking to win the Royal Rumble in the main event later on tonight.

 

Randy Savage Vs. The Ultimate Warrior - ***

 

  The Warrior takes the early advantage but Savage is able to make a comeback attacking Warrior's injured ribs. Savage works the ribs but Warrior makes his comeback. Warrior is unable to finish Savage and looks angry with himself. Savage secures an advantage. Warrior makes his comeback but, Savage comes back and hits the double axhandle followed by the flying elbow for the three... but only with his feet on the ropes.

 

Bret Hart Interview -

 

  Hart says that Perfect cheated to win but in the end that's alright because he has bigger fish to fry in the thirty man Royal Rumble tonight.

 

WWF World Title: Hulk Hogan Vs. Rick Rude - **1/2

 

  Rude wears down Hogan. Hogan hulks up to make his comeback but Rude rolls out of the ring. Hogan chases Rude who rolls back into the ring and attacks Hogan as he enters. Rude misses a top rope splash. Hogan lifts him up and throws him to the ropes and hits the big boot and runs backward to hit the ropes for the big leg but Heenan trips him. Hogan tosses Heenan into the ring and goes back for the big leg on him but is caught from behind for The Rude Awakening. Hogan makes the last second kickout and begins to hulk up again. He throws Rude to the ropes and hits the big boot. He drops the big leg and scores the three count to retain the heavyweight title.

 

Royal Rumble Video Package -

 

30 Man Royal Rumble: Winner gets WWF Title shot at Wrestlemania VI - ****

 

  Rick Martel and Shawn Michaels are the first two men in. It goes back and forth til' the time expires and Tugboat enters the ring. Tugboat eliminates Michaels and Martel gets a lucky dropkick to send the terrible toot over the top rope. The entrance of stars continues as Randy Savage comes in at number eleven, Bret Hart at number fourteen, The Ultimate Warrior at number 19, Mr. Perfect at number 23, the big man, Earthquake at number 29. With twenty nine men in the fight it's down to seven men, Randy Savage, The Ultimate Warrior, Mr. Perfect, Bret Hart, Earthquake and still hanging on though utterly exhausted is Rick Martel. The thirtieth man enters the fray and it's none other than Ted Dibiase. All the men gang up on Earthquake trying to send him over the top rope. Earthquake uses his superior strength and flings Dibiase and Mr. Perfect over the top rope as they had control of his arms. Earthquake ran forward and knocked Bret Hart over the top rope and The Ultimate Warrior hit a  suprising clothesline that put Randy Savage on the outside mat.

 

  And so the match was down to Earthquake, The Ultimate Warrior, and Rick Martel. Earthquake grabbed Martel to toss him over the top rope but Warrior hit a clothesline to try to simultaneously eliminate both of them. Both were sent over the top but Martel hung on to the top rope and slid back into the ring. Warrior lifted Martel up into a gorilla press to toss him over the top but Martel slid out from the back and dropkicked The Ultimate Warrior in the back of the head sending him through the ropes and out to the floor. Martel celebrated thinking he had won the Royal Rumble but Earl Hebner was quick to point out that Warrior only went through the ropes. Martel waited for Warrior to get back in the ring and during that time caught his breath. Martel attacked Warrior as he came back into the ring. Warrior fought back though and hit the gorilla press slam followed by the big splash. He lifted Martel to his feet and finally tossed him over the top rope and to the floor.

I really enjoyed that, Andrew.  You had shown me the first parts before, but it turned out nicely.  Now, as we discussed- This Sunday at Grandma's we rebook Easter!

Good job.

 

I never got into Martel's Model run but I loved the bit where Martel is going to take full advantage of the 30 day rule. I suits his character. Reminds me of Honky Tonk Man in his glory days. Taking full advantage of the rules.

 

I missed the tag team division though. You've got the Harts, the Rockers, LOD, Nasty Boys and the underrated Power & Glory on the roster so I'm looking forward to see where you're going with that.
