Most unexpected finish to match?

Recommended Posts

What match finish did you sit and watch and made you say "Riiight..." Whether it was stupid or unexpected.

It didn't make me say "Riiiiight...", but the infamous Montreal Screwjob is probably the most unexpected ending I've ever witnessed on a wrestling PPV.

There's always the casket match.

Other than that, I nominate the first Hell in a Cell, which had Kane (in his 1st appearance) ripping the door off the cell and killing Undertaker with just one tombstone piledriver.

Kevin Nash Vs Rey Misterio Jr when Nash went to powerbomb Rey and Rey reversed it and pinned Nash (can't remember how he reversed it exactly).  It wasn't exactly that it was stupid, but I didn't like the fact that Rey Jr went over Nash - it was unrealistic.

Wrestlemania 2000, Hardcore Holly had the pin...go the 1-2-3 but clearly his opponent kicked out at 2. Dumb and confusing.

The obvious choice  for unexpected finishes would be the title match at Survivor Series '97.

Other then that, I can only think of Rock's heel turn into the Corporate Champion and winning the WWF title against Mankind at Survivor Series '99 (?).

Stupid finishes? Let's see:

The final (ha!) blowoff of the HHH-Angle-Stephanie love triangle feud, where Steph remains with Trip even though all signs pointed to Angle and pretty much all the fans wanted it that way.

David Arquette winning the WCW title.

Vince McMahon winning Royal Rumble 2000 (?) and winning the WWF title.

Stephanie winning the Women's Title (though not unexpected).

Stephanie pinning the Rock (I can't remember when but it was a giant clusterfuck with everyone hitting their finishers on him before the pin)

Basically anything involving non-wrestlers winning a major match gets the raspberries from me.

That was that Hardocre free-for-all that had a million title changes, right?

(Damn, Pete Gas became a 2-time champ 'cuz of that...)

The beyond dumb finish of the Vader-Flair WCW title match.  Now I can certainly buy Flair going over, but the way it happened served to make me totally mental.  Vader hits a standing avalanche, grabs his knee, and gets caught in this weak ass rollup thing for the three.  The monster Vader finally loses his gold because of a rollup???  Insanity!

Roddy Piper vs Bad News Brown from WM6, Piper had halve of his body painted black then used a white glove on his "black side", the match was a brawl with no real finish

Undertaker & Kane vs DDP & Kanyon, the cage match that did nothing but make say WTF is that it?

Doinks vs Bam Bam Bigalow Team, hmmmm where was the real Doink?  Survivor Series 93

And Stephanie pinning Rock after Test, Shane , and Booker(I think) all hit their finshers on him was beyond pathetic.

One that had me in absolute shock (in a good way) was Owen Hart pinning Bret at WMX. Still one of my very favorite matched because the ending was so well built up, but still so shocking an upset.

As to 'what the hell' finishes that no one's mentioned, the 'fast count' at the Sting-Hogan blowoff (well actually the whole match in general). Sting's been built up as an absolute god, and Hogan beats him around the ring and pins him clean? That was what killed WCW for me. I only tuned in to the occasional cruiser match after that, because Hogan's ego killed, what, a year and a half of storyline building? Awful.

Diesel/Shawn from WrestleMania XI really threw me. I really thought that Shawn was going to win the WWF Title and have a Flair-style heel run, the prospect of which psyched me up so hard in the weeks leading up to the PPV. Could you blame me? The title had changed hands at every Wrestlemania since WM 4!

What made it worse was the fact that I was watching this in a Montreal bar with my friend who was a true Diesel fan, and I had mocked him for weeks that his hero was going to drop the belt to good ol' HBK. Boy, was I pissed. I kinda threw a fit and stormed out of the bar to play Killer Instinct in the arcade next door, so I didn't get to see the LT/Bigelow match until I saw the tape.

I'd have to say Bret Hart beating Ric Flair for his first WWF World Championship. Flair taping out in the Sharpshooter. No one saw that coming.

This was pretty lame but The Giant being dropped off the parking garage and making it back later on the card and wrestling w/out any "injuries" or marks on him.

Regal/edge at no way out. So, the ref's checked him, this HAS to be the end of this knucks stuff by now, and edge HAS to go over, so just spear him, ooh, edge has the knucks, sweet irony, a cruel mistress indeed....oh. Regal had some other knucks from some other place. What the hell? Hated that feud.

You stole my answers....just add Survivor Series '97 in there too.

Well, for stupid finishes I think Yoko was in two of them. The one where we last saw Hogan in the red and yellow in the wwf. What was that crap with the Japanese photographer? Then Yoko/Taker at Rumble '94. No wonder the wwf was going through problems with dumb finishes like those on the major ppv shows.

Just to mention one off my head I thought the Shawn/Taker/Bret finish at Slam '97 was awesome.

The retirement match at Wrestlemania VII between Savage and the Warrior. That ending really came out of nowhere as the crowd, Bobby Heenan, myself and pretty much everybody else seeing it for the first time wasn't expecting it.

The ridiculous Flair vs Hogan first blood steel cage match in '99 which ended with a pinfall.

How can anyone forget Ric Flair being the one to job in that atrocious 3 tiered cage match at uncensored 96. You know, the one where Savage and Hogan ran roughshod over something like 8 or 9 guys, 2 of which were actors. And Ric Flair is the one who laid down? WTF!?!?!?

to continue the survivor series tradition, survivor series 1999 when big show won the title.

i was sat there during show's "emotional" celebration thinking,

'well, what the fuck was that?'.

the benoit-jericho-austin triple threat match at king of the ring, where Benoit superplexes Austin off the top, but then just lays there as austin gets an arm over him. still leaves me confused as hell

At the very end of the summer of 2000, in the Nitro Cage3 match where Goldberg was walking out with the belt and Bret came out of nowhere and nailed him with the door, allowing Nash to pick up the belt and retain the title.

And, at the time, when HHH beat Foley in the HIAC match to end his career was a huge 'WTF?' moment.

Well, when Bret Hart beat Austin in his return match at Survivor Series 96 by reversing the MDD, I was pretty surprised.  The match was so good and told a great story.  I truly, and a lot of NY fans, though that Austin was gonna win (hence the "let's go Austin" chants).  Such a classic match.  I was so stunned when Austin lost.  Of course, I was only 13, and I wasn't a big smark back then.......

Beforemy picks, i noticed someone say flair tappd to Bret. They didnt have tap outs til 1997, he merely shook his hea dyes to giving up.

anyway..

Austin/Bret at WMXIII shocked me. I thoguht austin was gonna breakout, being the first ever, and finish hmoff

Royal Rumle 00: Triple H vs. Cactus Jack.

QAll lead spinted to foley winning.

WTF?

Sting/Hogan:

Referee & sting fucked up the ending, and the whole match was Hogan beating him down. Who was booknig this? I know Russo wasnt aorund.

Warrior/Hogan:

Wow, they mimmicked the WM6 match for 4/5 of this none classic.

Not really unexpected in the sense that the rest have been, but how about the Owen Hart/Austin match where Austin was paralyzed in the ring for a bit and still managed to crawl over and take the win. Worst roll up I ever saw in my life but damn was I cheering the man for continuing.

Was there ever a Nash/Sid Powerbommb match with a Ref bump and Nash revived the Ref and told him he'd powerbombed Sid when he hadn't and the ref just went okay and Nash won the match?

Starrcade 99. I have it on tape, it's really messed up. I'm not sure if it was shoot or an angle, but it was confusing. Basically, the ref was down, Jarrett hit Sid with a guitar, Nash got the ref up and said  he powerbombed him, the match ended.

It was a powerbomb match, BTW.
