Guest JHawk Report post Posted July 7, 2003 One of the reasons I'd be weary ordering an MMA PPV is the same reason I'm not so hot on ordering boxing. I don't want to pay X dollars for the "big fight" and watch it last all of three minutes. I'm the same way, although occasionally MMA events are available for rental and I'll pick one up. They're interesting, but I'd still rather pay two bucks for the rental than anywhere between 20-40 for the PPV.
Guest RavishingRickRudo Report post Posted July 7, 2003 I understand that, the last PPV's best match only lasted for like 4 minutes ... but those 4 minutes were better than anything I've seen the WWE put out in a while (though that tag match on smackdown was reeeeal good.. stupid heel turn.) It's a gamble, yes, IMO the last Pride PPV didn't live up to expectations and it was the first one I actually bought rather than use a box , but then again the last UFC PPV a week earlier went above and beyond expectations and many call it one of the best UFC PPV's ever. There's only so much match making can do, but if you look at the next Pride PPV (in August) they've got their card STACKED .... AND IT HASN'T EVEN BEEN ANNOUNCED! It's just 7 names for a 4 match tournament (quarter finals in Aug, semis and finals in Nov IIRC) and the speculated super fight looks to be a barn burner (2 or 3 other matches remain). The rest remains in, well, luck. I find more often than not you get lucky - especially now-a-days where the calibre of fighters is high.

Guest RavishingRickRudo Report post Posted July 7, 2003 I'd just like to mention that the feud between Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic and Fedor Emelianenko hasn't even really started and it's better than Brock vs. Angle This is all based on the last PPV where Cro Cop - a world class kickboxer and leader of the Croation Anti-Terrorist unit - easily beat a Top 10 fighter whom Fedor - the current champ - kicked the crap out of, (but not in the same amount of time) and Fedor got rocked with a right punch from Fujita (a guy who Cro Cop basically obliterated the first time they fought) though he recovered nicely and was able to win very convincingly with a striking combo (which was previously unseen - his stand-up ability that is) and a tight rear naked choke. This set up Cro Cop as a killer in the heavyweight division and put a dent in the armour of the previously dentless Fedor. The question now is this: Can Fedor take Mirko down ? (Herring, a wrestler whom Mirko beat with a rib breaking left kick, was unable to him down) and can Mirko knock out Fedor? The speculated Super Fight at the next show features Cro Cop vs. Nogueira (the former champ whom Fedor owned) where the winner fights Fedor at the November show. This will be the true test of Mirko's abilities and if he wins, he will be very deserving of the title shot. If Nog wins, then we will see the rematch from Pride 25 and see if Nog can get revenge. Guest JHawk Report post Posted July 7, 2003 You can rent MMA shows? Do you mean like old UFC's?? Usually old UFCs, but my local store used to slip a PRIDE video every once in a while before they completely emptied the store of all "Special interest" videos. Guest RavishingRickRudo Report post Posted July 7, 2003 REEEEEALLY? Pride Vids? I've never heard of that before. But then again, the only Pride I see up here are the DVD's and they cost like $35. The Old UFC's had some good stuff in them, but aren't really representative of the way the fights go on today. From UFC 13-on it gives you a nice peak at things to come (this is when fighters began to cross-train and picked up better submission, grappling, and striking skills) but they were still lacking. Now, though not nearly completely evolved, MMA fighters are WAY more well rounded and better conditioned - which is funny cause it's only been 4 or 5 years since those events and some of the same fighters (Couture, Sakuraba, Silva, Vitor, Tito, Rizzo) are still fighting. Still, thirty something dollars for four minutes is, well, you know. Of course, I can, er... get around the paying aspect, but there is only so many times I want to go over to that poor soul's (a relative of mine) house and kill her night with my frugality. Guest ViciousFish Report post Posted July 7, 2003 Pride PPV's cost $30 and that's in Canada. And Rua never got kneed to the face, maybe you're talking about Carlos Newton and that was Pride 25 - which is widely considered to be one of the greatest MMA events ever with exciting fights from top to bottom. You might have to elaborate on this "boring" show cause I don't see any elements to it. The first fight was very active on the ground and had a sweet armbar finish, the second match had a VERY action-packed 2nd round, the 3rd fight had the aformentioned knee - which was SICK - the 4th fight was also very active and had a wicked ending that I find myself looking at from different angles several times every time I see it, the 5th fight had an upset and was all stand-up but featured some very funny momments, the 7th match featured another sick knockout and one of the most exciting moments in MMA history in the post match antics, and the main event - while mainly in the guard, features some AMAZING ground and pound - and I HATE ground and pound. And then there was the commentary, which was off the charts. Rua did get knocked out by Kevin Randleman at Pride 24 - but that card had one of the best matches and most active -non boring- matches in Nogueira vs. Henderson. Yeah, you're going to have to elaborate, what do you find entertaining? In retrospect, maybe it was Newton. I bought the game 'cause it's pretty decent so I figured I'd spend money to watch a PPV. It may have been a great card but me and my friends were monumentally bored. It's not that I hate that kind of stuff and automatically say it sucks. I've liked some UFC stuff. I just found that PPV boring for no particular reason.
Guest RavishingRickRudo Report post Posted July 7, 2003 Still, thirty something dollars for four minutes is, well, you know. I never said that $30 = 4 minutes, it's just those 4 minutes were REALLY FUCKING GOOD and was the best match on the card. Cro Cop vs. Herring was good, Silva vs. Takase was good, Hamanaka vs. Schembri was good. Of course, I can, er... get around the paying aspect, but there is only so many times I want to go over to that poor soul's (a relative of mine) house and kill her night with my frugality. I highly suggest going over there for the next Pride PPV in August. That's shaping up to be the card-of-the-year. It may have been a great card but me and my friends were monumentally bored. It's not that I hate that kind of stuff and automatically say it sucks. I've liked some UFC stuff. I just found that PPV boring for no particular reason. How can you be bored for no particular reason? I don't follow this. I am bored to death by boxing, but that's because it's just punching and not enough action. MMA includes a variety of elements from Wrestling to Muay Thai to BJJ - and the P25 card had all of that including an epic Main Event. RRR: Perplexed
