Finishers that once meant shit...

Recommended Posts

Guest HartFan86

I was thinking, what finisher move (that's really impressive now) used to mean shit back in the day?

1. Rocky Maivia vs. Savio Vega @ Revenge of the Taker '97 IYH. Savio kicks out of the Rock Bottom at 2.

2. Numerous times Billy Gunn used the rocker dropper, and people kick  out at 1-2.

Way back when Shawn Michaels was with the Rockers and even at the beginning of his solo run, the superkick was only used as a signature move.  Of course, later on, it morphed into that crazy Sweet Chin Music that we all know and love.

1) When the People's Elbow was just mean to embarass, they would kick out at 1, 2, or he just wouldn't even land the move.

2) When the Warrior kicked out of the Pedigree at WMXII.

3) When Billy Gunn changed his finisher to the sleeper dropper, he never got a three again for the fameasser.

not exactly, because he still uses the "one and only" from time to time, but now frequently ends matches with the fameasser.

The Stunner.  It used to be THE move that put away EVERYONE, no matter if heel or face.  Once The Rock started to kick out of it, so did Triple H, and then Kurt Angle (three times at Summerslam, once at Unforgiven).  Sure, Austin has kicked out of signature moves too.  Basically, these past 5 years wrestlers are forsakeing signature maneuvers now.  It should be the move that puts someone away, no matter how rediculous it may be......

At Survivor Series '96 Bret Hart kicked out of the stunner. That was back when everyone would sell it like they were choking instead of being knocked out.

There was a time when the Crossface was declared legally dead by Mr. Keith before people like Angle and Austin sold it like a legitimate finisher again.

Yeah, the Rock's REFUSAL to sell the crossface pretty much killed it for a while. One of Rocky's weak point's is he is God awful in submissions.

The legdrop wasn't a finisher until Hogan.

The Sharpshooter didn't mean much in WWF before Bret, it was Ronnie Garvin's finish for a few months and Adrian Adonis used it on Wrestling Classic, to no response.

The chokeslam didn't mean to much as a finisher until Austin had to sell it because he couldn't take a Tombstone and Big Show came in.

I think the reason why Warrior kicking out of the Pedigree back then got a pop was because the move actually did mean something at the time.

At Cold Day In Hell, Rocky Maivia gives Mankind the Rock Bottom on the steel ramp and he still kicks out.

The Closeline From Hell was a finisher that most guys kicked out (If I remember correctly) of in '98 & '99 until the APA was born.

Since the Rock can't do it right, the Sharpshooter means shit yet again.

Might as well throw in the Liontamer/Walls of Jericho, too. Other than Matt Hardy tapping out, I can't remember a single person who Jericho got a victory over with that submission.

Twist of Fate and the Swanton Bomb were often kicked out of until the Hardy's got a mega push.
