He had the belt all of a couple of weeks before they decided to pull the plug on him and put Austin back on top instead. I think they could have at least let him keep it until No Mercy. Guest Hogan Made Wrestling Report post Posted March 29, 2002 In my opinion the WWF waited a month too long to give Angle the belt. Go back and watch Summerslam 2001, and witness the awesome heat that match got, and how pissed the crowd was at the Nick Patrick screwjob. Once he won the belt at Unforgiven, he got the sympathy pop for 9/11 and the hometown pop, but the chase for the title had cooled off. I think if Angle had been given the title at SS2001 his reign would have been longer and better, I think Angle would be a good champ right now, but on the other hand his character does pretty well without the title. As for the original poster's P.S., I like Benoit but I don't think him getting the title when he comes back would be a good idea unless he can work the mic a bit better than in his last run (where Jericho did more of the talking) and draw some good heat, face or heel. Guest Report post Posted March 30, 2002 Three letters...they're all the same You hit the nail on the head pal. HHH's return plus the arrival of the nwo and Hogan made the main event way too crowded. Angle had his moment in the sun during the summer and he did a pretty good job even though he was, groan, a face. A trip to the mid card isn't the world's worst thing.........but once the nwo and Hogan outstay their welcome, and Rock goes off to shoot another movie, then Angle, Benoit, Jericho and maybe RVD can step up to the main event and show why they belong. It also didn't help that JR kept hyping the fact that the RAW where Kurt lost the belt was "the biggest of all time." They did everything they possibly could to make it look like Angle was gonna lose without actually saying it flat out. Regal's obvious turn was simply icing on the cake to a predictable title loss. On top of that he *didn't* need to work his way through the indies first. Quite frankly no other world champion has payed *less* dues, so quit complaining that he hasn't has a year long reign or isn't a 5 time champ by now... Guest Special K Report post Posted March 30, 2002 I just think that the WWF needs to realize that Kurt Angle draws legitimate and HEAVY heel heat, and they can switch him to full-on badass with occasional goofiness, instead of having him always be a spazz (though last Smackdown!s commentary killed me). This would be the best way to make him take advantage of the heat he gets. I mean it's rare that a real badass heel gets real heat on him. Look at 'Taker: mixed reaction. HHHs last heel run, mixed reaction. Same for Austin. Well, at least he'll get ring and mike time on the SD!, which makes me happy. Plus hopefully he'll murder Hogan once the nostalgia dies down. He's much better at being funny than he is at being a "bad-ass". ...and in my opinion the last long run of "bad-ass" Angle (during his second title reign) was awful. Who wants to see Hogan/Hall/Nash pull him down to their level during matches? Guest Report post Posted March 30, 2002 I hated Angle's bad ass face run, it just wasn't hi. The only truly Angle thing he did during his face run was the milk truck. Personally, I love the Angle that came after NWO '01. He was violent and vicious and yet still had that goofyness. Nice. When it comes down to it the OBVIOUS money fued right now is Angle/Rock... Which would be not only super heat (man, would there be super heat) but also the fact both guys can put on very good matches.
