Bored 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2003 Since there basically is a way to vote in a player that you feel was snubbed with the 32nd man ballot here is your chance to vote on who you think least deserved to make the team. I included starters, reserves, and one team players who were picked over someone more deserving on their team. Edit: Fucked up the title...maybe a mod will edit it to "least". Guest Steve J. Rogers Report post Posted July 7, 2003 How is Armando Benitez NOT on this poll? The guy is the very example of how saves are the most overated stat in baseball. Give me a guy who has the guts to gut himself out of a tight big game situation and not have the slew of meltdowns Benitez has had, even going back to Baltimore Steve

He isn't THAT bad and seriously what other Met would you take? Maybe Cliff Floyd but beyond that there was no Met that even deserved one second of consideration and that's why I didn't list Benitez. Burnitz for one. Ty Wigginton could have been a possible choice Actually other than Floyd those would be the ONLY ones I'd consider. Maybe select Piazza to keep his game selected streak alive. Hey he was in a groove when he went down And yes Benitez IS THAT DAMN BAD! Put it this way, if I was an ALer in one of the cities fighting for a playoff spot, and I have a great home record this year, I am ROOTING for Dusty to bring him in in the 9th okay, this could go as badly as Atlee Hammaker 1983 grand slam to Fred Lynn. Guest bravesfan Report post Posted July 7, 2003 Mike Williams, but I'm struggling to find someone on the Pirates worth his salt otherwise (Giles, probably). For the sheer "he doesn't deserve the spot, no matter what", I'll go with Ramon Hernandez.

Bored 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2003 Mike Williams, but I'm struggling to find someone on the Pirates worth his salt otherwise (Giles, probably). For the sheer "he doesn't deserve the spot, no matter what", I'll go with Ramon Hernandez. I'll refuse comment on the comment on Ramon...oh fuck it...he's an excellent defensive catcher and does a great job of handling the pitching staff. I don't disagree with people being upset that Varitek (who I picked on my final all-star picks) didn't make it but saying Ramon doesn't deserve to go no matter what is a little unfair. Giles definently deserved to go over Williams. He's been hurt but still has put up decent numbers. I'd also go with Jason Kendall and maybe even Kenny Lofton over Williams. Bored 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2003 Which one of those is the Padre? That's who I'm voting for. Rondell White. White is having a solid year and I think the picks of Williams and Carter for their teams over other players were more of head scratchers than White for the Padres or Benitez for the Mets. Maybe Klesko (who I would have gone with) or their young pitcher Pivey could have gone but White isn't a bad pick for them.
Guest D'Lo White Report post Posted July 7, 2003 It has to be Mike Williams, this guy has an ERA above 6. Out of his 20 something saves, I think maybe 5 of them he didn't give up a run. Giles, Kendall, Lofton, Aramis Ramirez, even Jeff Suppan with a 7-7 record deserves the Pirate spot over him. He makes Benitez look like Mariano Rivera. Guest bravesfan Report post Posted July 7, 2003 Giles definently deserved to go over Williams. He's been hurt but still has put up decent numbers. I'd also go with Jason Kendall and maybe even Kenny Lofton over Williams. The selection of Giles or Lofton probably would've thrown the entire roster out of order, considering the amount of sub-.500 teams that have their lone All-Star in the outfield. (San Diego, Arizona, Colorado) If they had chosen Giles to go over Rondell, then take Peavy to replace Mike Williams - I would've been much more happier with that situation. Guest DerangedHermit Report post Posted July 7, 2003 The Mets above Benitez I would've chosen: Jeromy Burnitz Steve Traschel Ty Wigginton Jae Seo Cliff Floyd
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted July 7, 2003 Mike Sweeney won't play. I see Frank Thomas replacing him, if he isn't the last player chosen. Eddie Guardado has no business being on the team. Fuck that piece of shit. The Twins don't deserve anyone, but Koskie and Pierzynski are more both more deserving. Carl Everett shouldn't of made the team. He's hitting like .271 with 51 rbi's. He's done absolutly nothing since early May.
Guest phoenixrising Report post Posted July 7, 2003 Mike Williams. With an ERA over 6 there's no way he should be in the All-Star Game. Hell, let's throw in Jose Jimenez of Colorado (7.09 ERA before being tossed out as closer) and Benitez, and watch the AL clinch home field.
Guest phoenixrising Report post Posted July 7, 2003 You could make a case for Lance Carter too. Sure he's been decent, but Rocco Baldelli and Aubrey Huff have been having All-Star caliber seasons as well.

You know what until about five minutes ago when they flashed the rosters on Sportscenter I hadn't even noticed he'd made the team. I guess he finished second in the player voting at DH...why bother picking a back-up DH when anyone can be put there? Besides Thomas deserved it more. Guest DrTom Report post Posted July 7, 2003 Mike Williams, in a close nod over Lance Carter. Both have been fairly useless, and Carter has the dubious distinction of toiling for Tampa Bay, but Williams' 6.00+ ERA and WHIP near 2.00 give him the "edge." As for Carter, I would have taken Huff or Baldelli from the Devil Rays. Of course, I think the rule that each team has to have a representative eats deeply of the man-ass, especially when the Game is supposed to "count for something." Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted July 7, 2003 I'm not getting the Ramon Hernandez pick over Jason Varitek. Varitek has Hernandez beat offensivley in every category. Defensive might go to Hernandez, but it's an All-Star game. Varitek is capable of calling a game.
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted July 7, 2003 One huge plus of getting snubbed is it motivates the player to show everyone they deserved to make the team.

Guest Youth N Asia Report post Posted July 7, 2003 Lance Carter by a mile and a half. This whole one from each team deal is a joke. This is the ALL STAR game! meaning they should all be stars. I don't think someone who's local team sucks is going to tune in cause they have a mandatory guy on the team even they don't know.
Guest BobbyWhioux Report post Posted July 7, 2003 Personally, I think Keith Foulke is less deserving than Barry Zito (and would make a better choice for that last option). Given how many AL closers are a cut above Foulke [Rivera, Percival, possibly Guardado, and I still prefer Billy Koch], and Foulke has blown enough saves to the point where he has as many wins (6) as starter Tim "I always get screwed in the W-L column by my bullpen" Hudson (who I think has had the most consistently good stuff among Oakland's 3 aces this year). You prefer Koch? BWAHAHAHAHAHA. Okay there. Anyways except it seems when Foulke has to save one for Hudson he's been great. Look at the numbers and Foulke has been the best closer in the A.L. so far this year. Percival and Rivera have been injured and you shouldn't make the team just because of what you might have done if they were healthy. Just ask the resident Twins fan on the board Vern Gagne for an opinion on Guardado.

Bored 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2003 so is there anyone from Detroit in the All-Star Game Dmitri Young who actually could serve as the back-up first baseman if Sweeney can't go but I think Delgado will play the whole game. Oh and I didn't put Young on the list because he was the obvious pick for the Tigers.
Guest Youth N Asia Report post Posted July 7, 2003 Young has had a GOOD season, but not an ALL STAR season. There are way too many teams for this one guy from each team rule. Too many less then decient guys are making the cut and it's hurting the game.

I don't think someone who's local team sucks is going to tune in cause they have a mandatory guy on the team even they don't know. My proposal is that only the host team and the division leaders should be required to have a rep. The season ticket holders going to the game deserve to have someone to root for and if your leading your division you should earn a selection.
