Mabel? Who would have cared about Mabel? Except Mo, at any rate. That is a new one though.

 

Truth be told, I think I accidentally started the HHH rumor back in the day by asking what his contract status was after the curtain call. That was the only one not Bret Hart or Luger that made any sense to me.

This is WCW we're talking about. I remember hearing the rumors and then finding out a few days later that it was Hulk Hogan.

 

When Scott Hall came in and interrupted Mike Enos v. Steve Doll I called up my friend and we bought it-

I bought into it when it was just Hall too, but I had it pegged as a work once Nash showed up, as I had heard about him signing with WCW.

Yeah, once it continued and Nash showed up, most knew it wa s a work. But I'll be damned if it didn't seem surreal when Hall showed up.

Yeah, Mabel was HEAVILY rumored to be the third member of the team once Bret Hart became out of reach. I remember hearing about it for weeks thinking what a horrible idea it was, thank God that one never happened or else WCW probably would have tanked a year sooner.

July 7 was also the day Sting won his first world title from Ric Flair at the 1990 Great American Bash. Sting was poised to be the next big star in wrestling until the injury set back all of his momentum. He was still over, but he wasn't nearly as white hot as he had been.

 

The Midnight Express and the Southern Boys stole the show on the undercard as well.

 

The Hogan heel turn was indeed a major shocker and pretty much paved the way for the wrestling boom of the late 1990s. Say what you will about Hogan, but he was a great heel and drew insane amounts of money at a point when nearly everyone had counted him out.
