MSNBC fires Michael Savage after anti-gay comments

 

MSNBC on Monday fired Michael Savage for anti-gay comments.

 

The popular radio talk show host who did a weekend TV show for the cable channel referred to an unidentified caller to his show Saturday as a "sodomite" and said he should "get AIDS and die."

 

"His comments were extremely inappropriate and the decision was an easy one," MSNBC spokesman Jeremy Gaines said.

 

There was no immediate comment from Savage, according to a spokesman at his office in California.

 

The brash, tough-talking Savage is one of radio's hottest jocks. His Paul Revere Society advocates closing borders, deporting illegal immigrants, mandating health tests for immigrants and eliminating entitlement programs.

 

The televised version of "The Savage Nation" began March 8 despite the protests of such advocacy groups as the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

 

Aired at 5 p.m. EDT Saturday, Savage didn't translate into a television hit. He increased the ratings for the time slot marginally, according to MSNBC.

 

The incident that resulted in his firing began innocently enough. Savage was taking viewer phone calls about airline horror stories, and a male caller began talking about smoking in the bathroom.

 

"Half an hour into the flight, I need to suggest that Don and Mike take your ..." the caller said, before he was cut off and his words became unintelligible.

 

"So you're one of those sodomists. Are you a sodomite?" Savage asked.

 

The caller replied: "Yes, I am."

 

"Oh, you're one of the sodomites," Savage said. "You should only get AIDS and die, you pig. How's that? Why don't you see if you can sue me, you pig. You got nothing better than to put me down, you piece of garbage. You have got nothing to do today, go eat a sausage and choke on it."

 

He asked for another phone caller who "didn't have a nice night in the bathhouse who's angry at me today."

 

These bums "mean nothing to me," he said.

 

GLAAD spokeswoman Cathy Renna said of Savage's firing: "It's about time.

 

"This latest attack made the clearest case for why Savage has no place on any reputable news network. MSNBC witnessed firsthand exactly the kind of verbal assaults GLAAD's been warning them about for the past five months, and to their credit, they backed up their promises to hold Savage accountable."

 

Well, at least he'll be more interesting on the radio now.

Personally I'm glad he lost his TV show. It's good for America that he did.

 

But at the same time, MSNBC, shame on you for firing him over this. That's what you bought when you signed Savage up. Don't cry foul when he gives you what you paid for.

I am not a Savage supporter at all, but I did listen to his show today to hear his side of the story......he basically said it was a set up crank caller by a "rival radio show" that does this to a lot of different radio shows, and Savage was led to believe that the caller was cut off and that the show was off the air when he made the comments. So, that is his side.....

Well, securing the borders is important to protecting our country and our way of life. If we continue to give legal ID to ILlegal immigrants how do we expect to keep ourselves secure? Should we continue to provide free healthcare for illegals when people who come here legally and try to work hard have to scrape to feed their families and pay their taxes and pay for insurance? Immigration will not destroy america. Illegal immigration, however, will put a huge hurt on our economy, and on the quality of all of our lives.

 

I also believe in the sanctity of marriage and in families. Savage has sad over and over (ad nauseum in fact) that he is a bedroom libertarian. He doesn't care what people do in bed. Wether he deviated from that on this most recent occasion is not known to me, I live in the NYC area where they took him off the air a few weeks ago because of contract disputes with his ABC owned home station in Frisco.

How do you say it will "cripple" our economy? In fact, it RUNS our economy. Most large businesses LOVE illegals because they can pay them minimum wage and treat them like shit. I don't think you can bitch about them taking up healthcare and education, especially when they're exploited to no end.

Savage calling homosexuals "sodomites" reminds me of Pat Buchanan. He's been known to use that word before. Expect Rush and Rush Jr. (Hannity) to complain about this.

Actually, he hasn't. According to a Salon article I read, he was a herbal quack studying "ethnomedicine" at one point, some of his best friends were homosexuals, and he was supposedly photographed swimming naked with Alan Ginsburg, but he dropped them after his "hard right turn." Michael "Savage" Alan Weiner may be a bigot and a homophobe now, but that's not the point. That's not who he really is. Michael Alan Weiner is a publicity-seeker first and foremost. He will say anything, do anything, subscribe to any belief if it keeps him in the spotlight and makes money. He is an attention whore writ large who, for a while, was actually taken seriously by a couple of corporations.

 

Some poor fools think he reflects their views. They're right, but not in the way they think: Weiner really does reflect their views. He polishes and buffs all their petty bile, their trivial and perpetually adolescent lives, their ignorance and their inchoate fears, and he puts them on display, and he pretends it's something to be proud of. And he does this because people like to think they're special and wonderful and right, even if they're very common and contemptible and terribly, terribly wrong. And because of this people listen to him and because of this Weiner makes money.

 

But Weiner is a mirror, all surface and nothing more. He has no substance, and as soon as you peel away the silver backing of (failed and failing) syndication and (rapidly disappearing) sponsors he becomes perfectly transparent.
