Guest bob_barron Report post Posted July 8, 2003 Hasek to play for Red Wings next season -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Associated Press DETROIT -- Dominik Hasek is coming back to the Red Wings, one year after he led them to a Stanley Cup title. "I now feel that I have achieved a better balance in my life, and I have more to contribute to the game,'' the 38-year-old goalie said Tuesday. "My batteries are recharged, and I have the fire for competing for the Cup again.'' The Red Wings late last month exercised an $8 million option on Hasek, who retired a year ago and now lives in the Czech Republic. It wasn't clear until Tuesday whether Hasek would play this season. His decision leaves Detroit with a pair of high-priced goaltenders. Curtis Joseph, signed a year ago to replace Hasek, could be traded. He first would need to waive a no-trade clause in his contract. "Ideally, as quickly as possible, I'd like to get a goaltender moved,'' general manager Ken Holland said Tuesday. He added: "We're going to have to be creative with some other teams to try to put something together.'' Holland said he planned to talk later Tuesday to Joseph, a 14-year veteran who was signed as an unrestricted free agent last summer to a three-year, $24 million contract. "My decision unfortunately affects other people. However my desire is to play with the Detroit Red Wings,'' Hasek said. Hasek is a six-time Vezina Trophy winner as the NHL's best goalie, two-time Hart Trophy winner as the league's most valuable player and an Olympic gold medalist from the 1998 Nagano Olympics. It's unclear how Hasek's situation could affect Detroit's bid to retain key veteran players that have yet to sign for the upcoming season. If the Red Wings trade Joseph, they likely will have to pick up a portion of his $8 million salary next season, diminishing the cash available to pay other players. Sergei Fedorov, Steve Yzerman and Igor Larionov are unrestricted free agents. And Detroit last week spent millions on free agent defenseman Derian Hatcher. Guest Youth N Asia Report post Posted July 8, 2003 With Legacy (who should be the starter after Hasek) the Wings have over $17 million in goalies. So they gotta trade Cujo, but they'll probably have to eat some of his contract to for another team to take him. As a Wing's fan I'd much rather have Hasek. Guest starvenger Report post Posted July 8, 2003 I'm a Leafs fan, so I hope that Joseph goes to a shitty team like Columbus or Chicago. Realistically though, he'll probably go to a place that needs a goalie like Vancouver or a team that doesn't mind taking on another $8 mil like the Rangers. Guest nl5xsk1 Report post Posted July 8, 2003 It makes sense to load up for this season, especially since it looks as if there's going to be a salary cap after the CBA expires ... they should dump CuJo (even if they have to eat some of us contract) and go for it all with Hasek. Having said that, if I was Legace I'd be pretty burnt on being kept on the back burner and would be looking to get the hell out of HockeyTown.

Guest Youth N Asia Report post Posted July 8, 2003 if I was Legace I'd be pretty burnt on being kept on the back burner and would be looking to get the hell out of HockeyTown. He's pretty happy where he is and has a 4 year contract I believe that he signed last season...or maybe the year before.
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted July 8, 2003 As a Buffalo fan, let me just say... WE WANT CUJO! Why? The Sabres aren't really close to contending. They seem better off, letting a younger goalie play.

I'd think a professional athlete would rather be the big fish in a small pond rather than a small (non-swimming) fish in a big pond. Why would he work his balls off to get to the NHL to only get to play a handful of games a year? His stats have always been above average, it's not like he's destined to be a career backup (a la Billington or Terreri) ... he could go to a different team and be a starter and try to make a name for himself. Guest Youth N Asia Report post Posted July 8, 2003 he'll be a started eventually. He can make more money and win more game in Detroit.
Guest Slingshot Suplex Report post Posted July 8, 2003 Some guy on ESPN a few moments ago said something about trading Cujo to the Rangers for Lindros and then Dunham to Boston. FUCK THAT I do not want Eric Lindros anywhere near the winged wheel. I would rather they get nothing for Joseph than see his damn 88 on a Wings jersey. I cannot stress enough...FUCK THAT
Guest nl5xsk1 Report post Posted July 8, 2003 Add Dunham to the "career back-up who Boston is counting on all of a sudden improving just by putting on the spoked B" list. Dunham, Shields and Raycroft ... the rest of the East better fear the B's this year!
Guest Slingshot Suplex Report post Posted July 8, 2003 Dunham isn't bad. I thought he played pretty well for the Rangers, what I noticed. It was speculation on this guy on ESPN anyway. He just noted that Boston needed goaltending.
Guest MaxPower27 Report post Posted July 8, 2003 Interesting. I guess Hasek wanted to beat up on some worthy competition. Cujo will go Eastern Conference if they can pull that off. Of course, I'd laugh if the team that Detroit traded Cujo to traded him right to Colorado...

Now who knows......Boston,the Rangers, the Islanders.....

Guest Slingshot Suplex Report post Posted July 8, 2003 I wouldn't mind that ..I like Boston. The sticking point would be how much of the contract Boston picks up.

Guest nl5xsk1 Report post Posted July 9, 2003 One of the things that I've heard is CuJo coming to Boston in exchange for Marty Lapointe. While CuJo would be a HUGE improvement in net for the B's, it would leave them painfully short on forwards. If the season started today, the second line would be PJ Stock with two call-ups from Providence. Yes, CuJo might "doom the B's to choke" but without him the team wouldn't even be in a position to choke.

Wing fans like guys that use to be on the team. But Marty's way overpaid (like Cujo) and definatly not worth Cujo one for one.

In terms of skills, no way ... one's a #1 goalie and the other is a third line grinder. But the Wings need to dump CuJo and the only way to do so is to eat some of his salary. And it's better to at least be getting playing time out of their money rather than just paying a former player. (what I mean is pay Lapointe to actually play rather than just eat some of CuJo's salary in order to dump him)
Guest Slingshot Suplex Report post Posted July 9, 2003 Martin Lapointe is way overpaid and does little but take dumb penalties for the most part. I almost threw a parade when he left the first time.
Guest CanadianChris Report post Posted July 9, 2003 It's looking like St. Louis is going to be the frontrunner. Which means that CuJo's never winning a Cup.
Guest Slingshot Suplex Report post Posted July 10, 2003 Any word on who might be going in exchange? I read down here they were looking to unload a little salary ..with Demitra's name being the first mentioned.
Guest LaParkaMarka Report post Posted July 10, 2003 If St Louis gets rid of Demitra, they're a bunch of morons. Demitra is one of their best players, possibly their best forward and definately a key to their offense. If they do trade him, who can they pick up who can fill the void? Maybe someone like Vinny Prospal, though I'm kinda hoping Vancouver picks him up (Prospal can play Centre). Adam Oates? Cassels? Actually, I guess St Louis could pull that off, if they're willing to eat that Cujo salary as well as some free agent money.
Guest Slingshot Suplex Report post Posted July 10, 2003 The article I read was about a week after their season ended and the mindset seemed to be they wanted to cut the budget. Now ,if they pick up Cujo, that may change things. They may be willing to make one more run at it and then cut finances next year depending on how well they do. Oates on Vancouver? He could be the catalyst that gets that Sedin 2nd line going.
Guest nl5xsk1 Report post Posted July 10, 2003 If Detroit picks up Demitra to add to the talent that they already have, the gap between Colorado & Detroit and the rest of the league will be painful. So far the only team in the East that's improved off of last season is Philly, and that's IF you think picking up Hackett is an improvement. Methinks the Cup is going back West
Guest LaParkaMarka Report post Posted July 10, 2003 It seemed like the Cup was going West this year too though, with Detroit/Dallas/Colorado/Vancouver all having stellar regular seasons, and that didn't exactly happen. Yes, Detroit and Colorado are talent-heavy, but that doesn't mean that a hot goalie/the trap kills them dead in the playoffs. Unless Oates is willing to take a big pay cut, I don't see him in Vancouver...Burke is way too stingy with money to get an aging centre like Oates. The second line could use a good centre though. Get Prospal, Burke! He's young(ish) and cheap(ish)!
Guest starvenger Report post Posted July 10, 2003 Wait, Oates is a "grizzled vet with a lot of heart", right? Well, that means only one thing - he's headed to Toronto!! [/sarcasm] btw if this actually happens (I put the probability at about 40%) can we shoot Pat Quinn?
