btw if this actually happens (I put the probability at about 40%) can we shoot Pat Quinn?

What, you need to wait for ANOTHER reason?

Yeah, you're right - the Glen Wesley snafu is reason enough, but I don't have a pic of Quinn I can edit holes into...

Here's one where Gretz thinks he's the Fonz http://espn-i.starwave.com/media/oly/2001/...o/r_quinn_i.jpg

Here's one where he's showing how far away the Leafs are from winning a Cup. Take that distance, multiply it by 125, and then square it. http://espn-i.starwave.com/media/nhl/2001/.../a_quinn_hi.jpg

Either of those would look good. If I had hosting, I'd host it.

I dunno, that second one seems to indicate the thickness of Domi's abnormally huge skull.

Even more scary, he looks a bit like Mike Harris in that pic...

It seemed like the Cup was going West this year too though, with Detroit/Dallas/Colorado/Vancouver all having stellar regular seasons, and that didn't exactly happen. Yes, Detroit and Colorado are talent-heavy, but that doesn't mean that a hot goalie/the trap kills them dead in the playoffs.

I don't think a hot goalie is enough to beat teams that are more talented. If you look at the recent past, the teams that had a hot goalie got as far as the Cup and then lost (Capitals w/ Kolzig, Buffalo w/ Hasek, Hurricanes w/Irbe & Weekes).

And I don't think the trap will work against a team with 2-3 really deep lines. The trap alone could barely beat the Ducks, so how could it beat the Avalanche? The only reason that it worked for the Devils in the Cup was because they could throw the Madden checking line out at the same time as the Stevens defensive pairing, but only because the Ducks only had one really strong line.

Who do they match up against when playing the Avs? The Sakic-Kariya-Selanne line? Then they'd be killed by Forsberg-Hejduk-Tanguay. If they match up against the Forsberg line, then Sakic's line will kill them.

A hot goalie may not win the Cup all the time, but it can sure help you get far.

Personally, I think Minnesota is primed for a good year this year. They'll have confidence after their run last year, and they still have some good players left. I think they can do some damage. And that's all based on their defensive system that managed to shut down Colorado enough.

Anaheim played a bit of the trap, and wasted Detroit and Dallas.

I don't think Colorado, Detroit, or Dallas is going to make a run at the Cup. They'll make the playoffs, sure. But I'm predicting another East win next year.

Colorado or Detroit have a much better chance than Dallas. How the Stars can lose Hatcher and then replace him with DON FREAKING SWEENEY is incomprehensible to me. Sweeney struggled for playing time in Boston, and the Bruins have no depth at the blue line. He wasn't that good in his prime, and is well past his prime now.

Well, Dallas still has Modano, Lehtenin (I know I fucked up the spelling there), Guerin, Morrow, and can still sign Pavol Demitra if the Blues dump him. They can still score. No question that their defense will take a hit, but I still see them as a threat.
