Legends of wrestling rant - part 2

Recommended Posts

Guest Maurizio C... Version 2

ok, I admit my last review of the game was written by a bitter man. Here's my unbiased take on the game:

Graphic - Good if you kkep in mind this is Acclaim we're talking about. SD3 graphics are stiif while LOW's are mor rounded, more *fat*.

Great cartoonish look for Hogan & Co.

Sound - Not terrible at all. RVD's music is almost identical to his old ECW intro. Hulk's got a nice hardcore piece. The music is based on the characters, so Terry's got a cowboy like music where Dynamite Kid's got a more English feel to it.

Moveset - Wow, look! It's Hogan with a superplex from the third rope!!! Serously, the weak part of the game is that almost any wrestler here, except for RVD, Sabu and Pillman, has got a crappy movest in real life. I don't blame Acclaim at all since having an old school game with headlocks and real life oves would have sold like ice in the north pole.

Roster - Pretty damn good if you consider half of the roster is either dead or crippled for life. Wonder why Ultimo Dragon didn't make it to the game. Unforgivable omissions: Jake Roberts, Shane Douglas, Bruno Sammartino, Bob Backlund, The Midnight Express, Marc Mero, Honky Tonk Man, The Bushwhackers. I'd have opted for a Mr.Perfect instead of a Tito Santana or Rick Martel, who are almost identical in outfits and mannerisms. And what happened to Flair? You put Steamboat in there and forget Flair??? No ***** series for me, then?!

Create A Legend mode - I spent half an hour creating "Superstar" Steve, so I consider it a step forward SD3. I don't wanna quit my job to spend my day trying to create an RVD for SD3. I like it fast and simple and the game's got it. The only low is that you can't choose a face or your finishing move.

Career mode - You start from a territory and move to another, and to another, and to another. The sad part is that you can unlock wrestler by formulating a simple button combo on the main menu, so playing the career mode is meaningless, then.

PPV mode - is there was one I could comment it, but there ain't shit, and that I consider a BAD thing.

game mode - you pull of moves and reverse those of your opponent. It may be funny in the beginning but after a few hours you've mastered it. push x when you get picked up for a scoop slam, then push round to punch your opponent, etc, etc, etc...

General vote - 7 out of 10. Buy this game if you're into nostalgia. I consider it better than SD3.

They also couldn't put in Ric Flair because of his AOL/Time Warner contract.  You knock the game for not including people that Acclaim had no way of even getting.  That's fair.

well, technically they're selling a name with a charachter contracted with the wwf (RVD)... isn't that illegal?

No, because Rob Van Dam signed a deal with Acclaim to appear in this game prior to signing a deal with WWFE.

any way you put it, this game sucks.

Exactly. Regardless of how many reviews get wrote on the subject, LoW flat out is a bad game.

Foley, you haven't done jack to back up your statements.  From what I can tell, you never figured out the controls, and you bash the game because of that.

the problems start when you *DO* discover how to play the command control... you sit there wondering "is this ALL?!"

The gameplay is deep, if you dig deep enough.  If you just play the game, and don't attempt to find any depth beyond what's already there, the game will be limited in gameplay, this is true of ALL games.

It's more methodical than slow.  If it was slow, then every aspect of the game would be slow.  The gameplay is more timing-based, and this can lead to a more methodical match pace.  You can wear your opponent down more thanks to this engine.
