Guest alkeiper Posted July 11, 2003 Report Posted July 11, 2003 A little fun side-topic. Over at baseball-reference.com, they group players by place of birth. So here's the idea. Come up with an all-time all-star team with players from your state. For example, Pennsylvania..... C- Roy Campanella 1B- Jack Clark 2B- Nellie Fox SS- Honus Wagner 3B- Dick Allen LF- Stan Musial CF- Ken Griffey Jr. RF- Reggie Jackson SP- Christy Mathewson SP- Eddie Plank SP- Ed Walsh SP- Herb Pennock SP- Mike Mussina CL- Bruce Sutter RP- Gene Garber RP- Sparky Lyle RP- Ron Kline RP- Gary Lavelle Reserves ----------- Max Bishop (.423 career OBP) Jimmy Dykes Mike Piazza Ken Griffey Sr. Hack Wilson Mickey Vernon Bobby Wallace If doing the full roster, keep it down to 25 guys.
Guest MaxPower27 Posted July 11, 2003 Report Posted July 11, 2003 Wow. Maybe I'm just in a hurry, but the only people that I recognized from Massachusetts were: Jeff Bagwell, Mark Fidrych, Tom Glavine, and Connie Mack.
Guest alkeiper Posted July 11, 2003 Report Posted July 11, 2003 Slim pickings, but Massachusetts does have Mickey Cochrane.
Guest undisputedjericho Posted July 11, 2003 Report Posted July 11, 2003 Dale Berra, Sean Casey, Casey Fossum, Mark DeRosa, Doug Glanville, Jeffery Hammonds, Bob Hamelin, Derek Jeter, Bobby Jones, Eric Karros, Ron Karkovice, Dan Miceli, Joe Orsulak, Scott Schoenwies. Not to much to write home about ecept Jeter.
Guest Vern Gagne Posted July 11, 2003 Report Posted July 11, 2003 My states got some really good players. But depth isn't a strong point. I don't recognize most of the players.

Guest phoenixrising Posted July 12, 2003 Report Posted July 12, 2003 Oh, this is going to be fun. California - Starters: C - Ernie Lombardi 1B - Mark McGwire 2B - Bobby Doerr SS - Joe Cronin 3B - Graig Nettles OF - Barry Bonds OF - Joe Dimaggio OF - Ted Williams Reserve position players: 1B Eddie Murray C Gary Carter OF Bobby Bonds 3B Matt Williams SS Nomar Garciaparra OF Tony Gwynn OF Duke Snider 2B Tony Lazzeri Pitching Staff SP - Randy Johnson SP - Tom Seaver SP - Don Drysdale SP - Bob Lemon SP - Lefty Gomez CL - Dennis Eckersley RP - Trevor Hoffman RP - Dan Quisenberry RP - John Wetteland
Guest undisputedjericho Posted July 12, 2003 Report Posted July 12, 2003 The Giambi's, David Wells, and Jeff Weaver are from California too, and I think Dontrelle Willis is from the Oakland area.
Guest DrTom Posted July 12, 2003 Report Posted July 12, 2003 Definitely a cool topic, Al. Keep in mind that several of these chaps played before the modern era, so their names might not be familiar. I tried to only list position players who played at least 500 games in the majors. Without further ado... The ALL-MARYLAND~! TEAM: Starting Nine: C: Jimmie Foxx 1B: Brian Jordan (Yes, he's played a few games there) 2B: Cupid Childs (.410+ OBP and ~300 SB make him the leadoff guy) 3B: Frank "Home Run" Baker SS: Cal Ripken, Jr. OF: Babe FUCKING Ruth OF: Al Kaline OF: Charlie Keller DH: Harold Baines Reserves: OF: Ball Lamar, Brady Anderson IF: Frank Herzog, Buttercup Dickerson Pitchers: SP: Lefty Grove SP: Bobby Matthews SP: Vic Willis SP: Denny Neagle SP: Dave Foutz CL: Steve Farr RP: Eddie Rommel RP: Steve Barber RP: Jeff Nelson RP: Tom Phoebus RP: Hugh Daily The pitching looks decent-to-good, and that offense looks AMAZING, with Baker, Ripken, Kaline, Foxx, and Ruth. Other states: Bow down.
Guest Vern Gagne Posted July 12, 2003 Report Posted July 12, 2003 OF: Babe FUCKING Ruth ...didn't know Ruth's middle name was FUCKING. These list are kind of deceiving. Derek Jeter was raised in Michigan, and Roger Maris lived in North Dakota.
Guest alkeiper Posted July 12, 2003 Report Posted July 12, 2003 Tom, Maryland looks fairly impressive. I weep for that defense though. Foxx at catcher, and three corner outfielders? Ouch. Scary thing is that I've known about Dave Foutz before your list. ...didn't know Ruth's middle name was FUCKING. Of course, his first name wasn't really Babe either.
Guest Choken One Posted July 12, 2003 Report Posted July 12, 2003 OHIO! Quick Note: I likely skipped over some good old-timers... I just went with names I've heard of... Ohio pretty much breeds Pitchers... Starting Pitcher: Roger Clemens and Cy Young First Base: George Sisler Second Base: Buck Ewing Short Stop: Barry Larkin Third Base: Pete Rose Right Field: David Justice Center Field:Shannon Stewart Left Filed: Paul O Neill DH: Mike Schmidt Catcher:Jim Leyritz Not Bad. Not Bad at all...
Guest MaxPower27 Posted July 12, 2003 Report Posted July 12, 2003 Well, I live in Florida now, so: FLORIDA~~! Vince Coleman Andre Dawson Luis Gonzalez Chipper Jones Tino Martinez Fred McGriff Tim Raines Deion Sanders Gary Sheffield Bobby Thigpen Dwight Gooden Mike Hampton Vince Coleman will have a fireworks exhibition before every game.
Guest DrTom Posted July 12, 2003 Report Posted July 12, 2003 I weep for that defense though. Foxx at catcher, and three corner outfielders? Ouch. Kaline could play CF if he had to. If not, I'd make him learn. I could also stick Brady Anderson in as a defensive replacement late in games if I needed to.
