Guest Steviekick Report post Posted July 11, 2003 DEADPOOL, CABLE, HAWKEYE, NICIEZA RETURN @ MARVEL (from newsarama.com) While it may have seemed as if Fabian Nicieza’s departure from Thunderbolts and resurfacing at Dark Horse and on other non-Marvel projects signaled his end with the publisher, but that’s not quite the case. The writer is returning with two ongoing series at Marvel - Hawkeye in October and Deadpool/Cable in November. ”They called me,” Nicieza said when asked how this new Marvel ball got rolling. “Seriously, it was as simple as that. I was off the editorial Rolodex for several months, which, although never fun, is a very natural thing for freelancers to go through. When The Blackburne Covenant came out from Dark Horse, I forwarded several of the very positive reviews for that original limited series over to some Marvel and DC editors. ”The reviews said exactly what I needed them to say -- something that I think needed to be said about me in general, or better yet, something I needed to say for myself through my work – ‘this is not the kind of book you would expect from Fabian and he is not the kind of writer you might think he is. And what I mean by that is the perception of being a very vanilla, safe spandex-adventures type of guy. I think I earned that reputation by succumbing to the things previous regimes expected of me and of their publishing line. When I started out -- even when I became an editor at Marvel -- I certainly didn't think, talk or act like vanilla. So, I thought it was time to "get back to my roots," and since Blackburne was a story I originally had 20 years ago, it seemed like the perfect vehicle to show a different side of my writing. “So it was probably a combination of raising my hand - okay, waving it frantically - outside the editorial window and a natural business cycle that reclaims bums like me every decade or so…does my tongue-in-cheek sarcasm ever come across in print interviews? Either way, I couldn't be happier being ‘back.’” For those who only associate Deadpool with Gail Simone, or think that “old school” Deadpool means Joe Kelly, it should be pointed out that Nicieza co-created the character back in his New Mutants days with Rob Liefeld. Given that the current Agent X series is undergoing a wrap-up of sorts with Simone at the helm, Nicieza was reluctant to talk about specifically who his Deadpool is, and what the status quo will be around him, although he did add, “I don't think anyone who likes Agent X or Deadpool will be disappointed by what is coming up. Lucky for him, there are plenty of people who always need mass mayhem perpetrated for reasonable rates, so in a very down economy, DP's still very employable.” ”I see Deadpool/Cable as a light adventure book with dark humor in it,” Nicieza continued. “Or sometimes, a dark adventure book with light humor in it. Cable is not exactly a laugh-riot -- or so DP thinks -- which will create fun tension between them as well. But Cable has a dry wit that, like fine wine, DP will learn to appreciate over time.” Okay, so maybe Nicieza wasn’t too reluctant to talk about Deadpool/Cable, but when it comes to Hawkeye, he’s a clam. “Hawkeye boils down to this: There're lots of great places all over this great country that serve great chili and have great selections of beers. Visiting them all is a moral imperative for a man who grew up traveling in a carnival. ”And really, Clint Barton's not looking to cause trouble, but sometimes, he just has a habit of... getting involved... in things... So, inevitably, trouble he didn't start becomes trouble he's in. Hawkeye is absolutely the Clint Barton we all know and love -- just in stories very unlike those that have been told in the past. I think the Hawkeye book will surprise the living crap out of a lot of people. I think it's already surprised some people in the Marvel offices.” Deadpool/Cable will be illustrated by Mark Brooks of UDON. Hawkeye will be illustrated by Stefano (Blackburne Covenant) Rafaele. Guest Steviekick Report post Posted July 12, 2003 As much as I like Hawkeye, I'm kinda pissed that they started a new series with him. I was actually trying to write a story about him for the Epic LIne...oh well
