Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted July 11, 2003 1.) Metallica: Master of Puppets 2.) Slayer: Reign In Blood 3.) Megadeth: Rust In Peace 4.) Exodus: Bonded By Blood 5.) Metallica: Kill 'Em All 6.) Anthrax: Among the Living 7.) Testament: The New Order 8.) Overkill: The Years of Decay 9.) Possessed: Seven Churches 10.) Pantera: Cowboys from Hell. Discuss... Reign In Blood should be replaced by Seasons of the Abyss or South of Heaven. and WTF is Pantera doing up there?
Guest Nevermortal Report post Posted July 12, 2003 Seasons & SoH were both slower (for the most part) albums, which is typically not what thrash is about (being fast....hella fast.) So yeah, Reign in Blood should be there. Either that, Hell Awaits, or Show No Mercy. Stormtroopers of Death should be on that list.
Rendclaw 0 Report post Posted July 12, 2003 I think that Vulgar Display of Power should be on there. It's not as fast, but it s much heavier than Cowboys.... although Phil actually effing SINGS on Cowboys....
Guest La Parka Es Mi Papa Report post Posted July 12, 2003 Reign In Blood is thrash metal's pinnacle. It's all been downhill since that one, and it should be at the top. And Pantera should not be on there. And Rust In Peace should be replaced by Peace Sells. Besides that, no real complaints.
Guest Shaved Bear Report post Posted July 12, 2003 i personally hate everything affiliated with Overkill...that is all

Guest Nevermortal Report post Posted July 12, 2003 How is thrash defined? I think CoreyLaz might want to tell us, remember that one?
Guest DARRYLXWF Report post Posted July 12, 2003 From the book 'Sound of the Beast: The complete headbanging history of Heavy Metal' "By 1985 power metal was no longer fast enough to contain the tempo of the underground. A new generation of thrash metal bands seemingly overnight switched to riffing in Metallica style triplets. While power metal was heavy metal on steroids, thrash metal's repeated fluttering of notes lifted effortlessly into flight. The music was constantly in motion, an intricate flood of enormous sound. Stage costumes and other showbiz trappings went out the door as 'bangers tucked their heads down and concentrated on music and more serious lyrics. Casual observers also call this speed metal; purists would point out that thrash relies more on long, wrenching rythmic breaks, while speed metal, as played by Agent Steel and Destruction, is a cleaner and more musically intricate subcategory, still loyal to the dueling melodies of classic metal. Titans of Trash: Anthrax: Spreading the Disease Artillery: Fear of Tomorrow Carnivore: Carnivore Death Angel: The Ultraviolence Exodus: Bonded by Blood Holy Terror: Terror and submission Megadeath: Killing is my business...and business is good Metal Church: Metal Church Metallica: Ride the lightning/Master of Puppets Nuclear Assault: Gamer over Slayer: Reign in Blood Testament: The New Order Voivod: Killing Technology Whiplash: Power and Pain"
Guest MaxPower27 Report post Posted July 12, 2003 So it's kind of like a cousin of heavy metal?
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted July 12, 2003 no, it's one of many myriad subgenres. I wouldn't so much agree with some of the statements given above, and I'd CERTAINLY disagree with some of the examples on that list..particularly the first one.. Thrash isn't about completely tight precision, or even a whole lot of variation. It's loud, it's fast, it's heavy, and (at its best) is just a little sloppy and ugly, with balls-out shredding solos and angry lyrics. Sort of 70's punk meets 80's speed metal, in a way. Guest cabbageboy Report post Posted July 12, 2003 Yeah that's what I've always considered thrash...a hybrid of metal and faster punk. In other words much harder than punk but much faster than regular metal.
Guest Nookingtons21 Report post Posted July 12, 2003 List needs Coroner, Death Angel, Annihilator, Voivod, and Nuclear Assault. List needs more Slayer. Less Metallica and Pantera.
Guest Nevermortal Report post Posted July 12, 2003 List needs Coroner, Death Angel, Annihilator, Voivod, and Nuclear Assault. List needs more Slayer. Less Metallica and Pantera. But more cowbell!
Guest Nookingtons21 Report post Posted July 12, 2003 But more cowbell! Everything needs more cowbell. I got a fever and the only cure is more cowbell.
Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted July 12, 2003 Thrash Characteristics are: Rapid-fire heavily palm-muted guitar riffs Pounding Double-Bass druming Vocals that shunned histrionics in favour of a gruff, street level delivery
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Report post Posted July 13, 2003 And a good counter to redbaron's definition would be Nevermore. Power/thrash, true, but much of their work IS thrash. I only disagree with Cowboys From Hell. Replace it with Megadeth - Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?, and I don't have much against this list. Heh, interesting. On my playlist, Slayer - "Angel Of Death" just started playing.
