GCW Wrestling from Boutwell Auditorium Birmingham, AL (07-11-2003)

Attendance: Around 1100-1200

Excellent indy show from promoter Dan Sawyer with several big names. Attendence was over a thousand, I figure around 1100 to 1200 which is no shame to any indy promoter.

Match 1:

Shark Boy defeated Joe Hogan and Inhuman Fly in a triangle match. Good lucha style action. Shark Boy gets kudos for his work. Joe Hogan is one of the most solid indy guys in the deep south. Joe Hogan trained under veteran southern wrestler Mike Jackson, and Jackson's work ethic shows in every Hogan match.

Match 2:

Scotty Anton (Riggs) defeated T.C. Carter. Anton looks exactly like he did in his last national stint with ECW. T.C. Carter is another outstanding local start with a ton of charisma.

Match 3:

Bull Buchanan & Mason Fury defeated Sweet Daddy & Theoadore Tutweiler III and Guff Grayson & Vinnie V, in a three way tag team match. Didn't catch everyones name exactly, but Bull Buchanan was the "big name" in the match. Looked great, I still have no idea why he got cut by WWE, Buchanan was in great shape and put on a good match.

Match 4:

Hacksaw Jim Duggan defeated Mr. Hughes (Curtis Hughes). You absolutely would not recognize Hughes, he has lost an incredible amount of weight and replaced it with muscle. Hughes looked fantastic, I'll have photos up on my web site soon because you will have to see him to believe it.

Match 5:

Headbustaz defeated The Bullet & Steve Armstrong. The Bullet (Bob Armstrong) replaced Road Dogg who wasn't there. Headbustaz are an outstanding African-American combo whose gimmick is similar to that of New Jack & Mustafa's old "Gangstas" team.

Match 6:

Buff Bagwell defeated Shawn Stasiak. Both Bagwell and Stasiak showed up in great shape. Bagwell went all out. I gotta go off on a rant here. I've met Bagwell several times over the course of the last eight or nine years and he has never- ever came across as the prima donna he is made out to be. I've never saw him be anything less than a 100% standout inside or outside the ring. Bagwell's basically had his career ruined by one bad match with Booker T during the WCW Invasion of WWE, but that show was a cluster from the start anyway, and how WCW was suppose to "get over" in Washington state is beyond me anyway. There's a lot more to that "bad match" story than you have heard before and a man shouldn't have his whole career ruined by one match. It seems to me a lot of people that don't know him are getting pleasure by running prima donna stories on him, but that's not what he's about at all. I'll have more on this soon, I'm going to tell the whole story on Bagwell.

Match 7:

Mad Dog Dan Sawyer & GCW Champion Night Prowler defeated Dusty Rhodes & Rick Steiner. Dusty bled and Steiner turned heel on Dusty giving Mad Dog the win. Dusty challenged Mad Dog to a cage match at the next show.

Match 8:

Raven defeated Terry Funk in a hardcore match. Funk bled. Great match, Raven is such a superstar. I've never been a big Raven mark before tonight, but he sure has "big time" stamped all over him, and Terry Funk, what can you say about the hardcore legend that hasn't been said before?

Great show, one of the best indy events in a long time.

I thought Bagwell got canned for instigating a fight with Shane Helms backstage in addition to the Tacoma performance. Unless your saying that story was fabricated and spread by Meltzer et al.

And do you really think Bagwell's a good wrestler? Because I remember him back to his Handsome Stranger days, and boy, the list of "Must See Buff Bagwell matches" is pretty damn short, if it exists at all.
