Guest Choken One Posted July 13, 2003 Report Posted July 13, 2003 The great american tradition; a event where all fathers and Sons gather around the glow of the flat screen plasma HD television... THE HOME RUN DERBY! So...Who ya got for the Derby?
Guest Sandman9000 Posted July 13, 2003 Report Posted July 13, 2003 I had Pujols, but this latest incident with him has made me change my mind. Now, I dunno.
Guest CanadianChris Posted July 14, 2003 Report Posted July 14, 2003 He stopped to admire a game-winning HR on Saturday, which led to him getting tattooed in the first inning today, which led to a big argument and eventually him getting ejected.
Rob E Dangerously Posted July 14, 2003 Report Posted July 14, 2003 UP, UP, UP, IT'S OUTTA HERE! Shuddup Berman! It's a home run derby
Bored Posted July 14, 2003 Report Posted July 14, 2003 I lost all interest in the event after McGwire retired so I won't be watching.
Guest treble charged Posted July 14, 2003 Report Posted July 14, 2003 Is Giambi in this thing? If so, he's my pick since he's been hot lately.
Guest Choken One Posted July 14, 2003 Report Posted July 14, 2003 Junior is HOT but he won't be there...
Guest Kingpk Posted July 14, 2003 Report Posted July 14, 2003 Best Derby moment for me: standing behind the Wall in '99 with a SHITLOAD of people while McGuire was up. It was like we were watching fireworks with all the "oohing" and "aahing". That ball that hit the tip-top of the lightower was an incredible sight.
Guest undisputedjericho Posted July 14, 2003 Report Posted July 14, 2003 As John Sterling would say... "The Giambino goes a-back-to-back and a-belly-to-belly!"
Guest Vern Gagne Posted July 14, 2003 Report Posted July 14, 2003 No one. Chris Berman make the Home Run Derby unwatchable. Back-Back-Back-Back-ohhhhhh!Shut up you annoying Fred Flinstone look alike.
Guest BobbyWhioux Posted July 14, 2003 Report Posted July 14, 2003 I can't believe it. People actually go to watch batting practice as a separate, paid event? I hope a bunch of big name sluggers start seriously injuring themselves doing this, leading to nobody wanting to participate in it anymore, and thus leading to the discontinuation of the derby. Basically, the Baseball Tonight / Sportscenter highlights give me the same thing every night: clips of all the homeruns from all the games, and a little bit of the other stuff, if it's "weird" enough. Unless somebody hits one 500 ft, homeruns are boring when seen out of the context of the game situation and the tensions thereof. These guys are teeing off on batting practice pitches. Whee. [*yawn*] edit: If they want to make the all-star game seem more meaningful, competitive, and serious, get rid of the crap surrounding it that gives it that exhibition circus type feel. I.E. The Derby.
Guest starvenger Posted July 15, 2003 Report Posted July 15, 2003 So who the fuck was bastardizing "Boys of Summer"? Seriously, DJ Sammy did a better cover...
Guest Kingpk Posted July 15, 2003 Report Posted July 15, 2003 A-Rod in the booth? Boo. WE WANT PIAZZA!! What, they couldn't find Michael Buffer this year? You'd think he would be camped out in front of the park.
Guest alkeiper Posted July 15, 2003 Report Posted July 15, 2003 My prediction: Chris Berman says "Winnie the Pujols" until I hurl my tv through the window.
Guest Choken One Posted July 15, 2003 Report Posted July 15, 2003 Fucking Sad when Aarron Boone is a better commentator then Berman whom done this thing for 12 years...
Guest Kingpk Posted July 15, 2003 Report Posted July 15, 2003 Garret Anderson has had the best strategy so far: just stroke them to right and get it high enough to clear the fence.
Guest fairtoflair7 Posted July 15, 2003 Report Posted July 15, 2003 Screw the Derby, I'm watching Sam Ryan
Guest Choken One Posted July 15, 2003 Report Posted July 15, 2003 Boring Derby all around cept for the whole Giambi/Pujols deal I think we can CLEARLY see the emergance of the future of the sport in Pujols...
Guest alkeiper Posted July 15, 2003 Report Posted July 15, 2003 Agreed. Pujols has amazed me from the day he entered the league.
Guest Choken One Posted July 15, 2003 Report Posted July 15, 2003 All Pujols needs is a Major Endorsment deal and Selig has his star for the future... Too bad people are butchering his last name like crazy...I've seen Pugols...Puholes....Pugoles...
Rob E Dangerously Posted July 15, 2003 Report Posted July 15, 2003 his last name, from what I gather is sorta pronounced Poo-holes. Remember that J = H in Spanish name pronounciation. I'm not sure is the ls part could be said 'pu-hols' Yet another shining day for the superstar who made a pit stop from the Dominican in my town (Independence, Missouri) before going on to.. St. Louis. Remarkable that the biggest star of this generation played baseball within miles of Kauffman Stadium, but somehow KC dropped the ball
Rob E Dangerously Posted July 15, 2003 Report Posted July 15, 2003 Albert Pujols played High School baseball in this stadium: (Crysler Stadium, Independence, Missouri. image from Microsoft Terraserver) You see those railroad tracks to the right of the stadium? I heard that Albert hit those tracks in high school. He is the best 23 year old player in a long time
Guest Kahran Ramsus Posted July 15, 2003 Report Posted July 15, 2003 I always thought it was poo-hols as well.
Gert T Posted July 15, 2003 Report Posted July 15, 2003 Fucking Sad when Aarron Boone is a better commentator then Berman whom done this thing for 12 years... The best comment was when Aaron asked if they were going to go to commercial after Bret's first HR so they could retrieve the bat. Not exactly
