Guest Downhome Report post Posted July 13, 2003 Ok, we all know how iffy Costner is, and this is no difference. This is a new western in which Kevin Costner, Robert Duvall, and Annette Bening stars. As said, Costner also is the director of this film. Not much can be said about the writer of the novel or screenplay, seeing how this is only the second for each writer. The following is some information on it... Tag Line --- Nowhere to hide. No reason to run. Plot Outline --- A former gunslinger is forced to take up arms again when he and his cattle crew are threatened by a corrupt lawman. Click here for the official web site, trailer, and more information! ...now check all of that out before you speak your mind on this. Personally, I think this will be great. Yes, it could very well be a huge stinker, but as always, I'm trying to think positive on this one. It's been a while since a truely great western has been out, and I'm hoping against hope that this will end up being a hit/great film. Sincerely, ...Downhome... Guest Mik at Cornell Report post Posted July 13, 2003 I honestly and truly believe the day of the successful western is over. Even if the movie is good, it would take a miracle for a box office that breaks even.
Guest HHH123007 Report post Posted July 14, 2003 I actually looked okay in the trailer......then I saw the words "From Director Kevin Costner". That killed it for me.
Guest WrestlingDeacon Report post Posted July 14, 2003 Uh...MiC, look at your sig pic. Both of the Shanghai films can be considered westerns. And there have been succesful, more traditional westerns in the past 15 years with Tombstone and Unforgiven and even Costner's own Dances with Wolves. The movie is getting dumped into a crap time of year and I haven't heard a word about it up to this point. That tells me that the studio isn't behind it and just wants to get rid of it, much like American Outlaws last year (or was that the year before?). I am not a big fan of Costner as a director, he tends to be slow, plodding and boring with his choices and there is nothing worst than a dull western. Guest godthedog Report post Posted July 14, 2003 there is nothing worst than a dull western. i've found that a dull art film is usually worse. when art films are bad, they're REALLY REALLY bad. but yeah, this movie will suck. 'dances with wolves' impresses me less and less with every passing year, haven't had any desire to see 'the postman', and costner is a bad actor anyway. a genre is only as good as the people working in it. somebody like spielberg or ang lee needs to make a western. Guest kkktookmybabyaway Report post Posted July 14, 2003 Just saw the trailers on IMDB. A few thoughts... It'll probably be 5 hours long. It'll probably be considered a flop because it won't break $100 million on opening weekend. It'll be at least DVD rental for me -- I don't mind Costner and I like Duvall... It's only 135 minutes, two hours and twenty-five minutes long. It's not too long, and it's the perfect length for a film of this sort in my view. It's also rated "R" for strong violence. Guest Choken One Report post Posted July 14, 2003 Costner has got to be the biggest FREE FALL in history... He was GOD from 1987-1993 and then came the shit and it hit HARD. "A Perfect World" was his last Great Movie...
Guest The Mighty Damaramu Report post Posted July 14, 2003 I love westerns so I'll go and see it.
Guest wrestlingbs Report post Posted July 14, 2003 A movie DIRECTED and ACTED by Kevin Costner! How could it not succeed? Seriously, it's not post-apoctlyptic scifi, so it may work.
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted July 14, 2003 I bet it's good. That's right. I bet it's good.
Guest Lethargic Report post Posted July 14, 2003 I thought the trailer looked good and Duvall + western is always a good combo. Hell, Costner + western has been pretty good too. It looked like a mix of Lonesome Dove and Tombstone. As in, they're driving cattle and then some bad guys show up so they whip ass. Enough plot for me. As long as there are bullets flying I'll watch it.
Guest Choken One Report post Posted July 14, 2003 You think Costner will try to work in an Baseball-Western movie?
Guest Lightning Flik Report post Posted July 14, 2003 You think Costner will try to work in an Baseball-Western movie? Firstly, it'll come if this latest adventure of his fails. That said, I do think this one will just barely cover the bills. That's about it.
Guest WrestlingDeacon Report post Posted July 14, 2003 Kevin Costner doing a bio-pic on the inventor of baseball in the late 19th century. I could so see him doing that.
Guest Ripper Report post Posted July 14, 2003 I'll see it. Shit, I liked Waterworld AND Postman. I think they were unfairly shit on because of how much they cost, but I think they were good films.
Guest kkktookmybabyaway Report post Posted July 14, 2003 You think Costner will try to work in an Baseball-Western movie? Maybe him and Duvall will pay a game of catch with cow patties or something...
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted July 14, 2003 No one invented baseball. Baseball evolved into what it is over time. Everyone knows this. I too liked Postman
Guest Choken One Report post Posted July 14, 2003 Maybe but Message in A Bottle just fucking sucked...
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted July 14, 2003 Except for Paul Newman...yes it sucked quite hard.
Guest Dmann2000 Report post Posted July 14, 2003 "A Perfect World" was his last Great Movie... Actually, "Thirteen Days" was, but that's all thanks to Bruce Greenwood and Steven Culp not "Look aht meh, I'm frahm Bahstan" Costner.
Guest WrestlingDeacon Report post Posted July 14, 2003 No one invented baseball. Baseball evolved into what it is over time. Everyone knows this. I too liked Postman I was referrencing Abner Doubleday who is credited with inventing the game and popularizing it in the US in the middle part of the 19th century. Guest DrTom Report post Posted July 14, 2003 The trailer looked good, so I'll probably see it. I'm not a big Costner fan, but he's tolerable in Westerns, and Duvall should make it good. The story doesn't sound like anything groundbreaking, though.
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted July 14, 2003 Abner Doubleday probably never even knew what baseball was. Spalding wanted to prove that Baseball was an american invention so the whole Doubleday story was made up. In fact it's a game that is part Rounders from England with different rules in place that changed over time. None of which have anything to do with Doubleday. It's one of those "Andre the Giant is 7'11''" things. It's not at all true.
Guest WrestlingDeacon Report post Posted July 14, 2003 I did not know that. I've just heard the name bandied about for years. I did know that baseball had origins in England with Crickets and Rounders. What about Neismith and basketball? Still, how would that stop Costner making a movie about him when he could do it as a baseball western. I'm sure if you pitched him the idea, he'd cream himself. Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted July 14, 2003 I would watch a Baseball Western. And I know nothing about Basketball...other than Neismith was Canadian and there isn't a single Canadian person who can play basketball. The whole Doubleday thing is quite fascinating though. I'm pretty sure the man was long dead before being attributed with the creation of the top sport in America at the time.
Guest Choken One Report post Posted July 14, 2003 as far as I know...Neismith is the actual creator of the game...
Guest ArkhamGlobe Report post Posted July 14, 2003 somebody like spielberg or ang lee needs to make a western. Actually Ang Lee HAS technically made a western: this one. I haven't seen it though, so I don't know if it's any good.
Guest Choken One Report post Posted July 14, 2003 No... Nolan or Fincher needs to make a Western...
