Vice City coming to X-Box

July 15, 2003 - Sources report that Rockstar's mega-money maker Grand Theft Auto: Vice City will be coming to the Xbox, possibly as soon as this holiday season.

As many insiders know, the Grand Theft Auto series is supposed to be PlayStation 2 console exclusive, however sources reveal that Rockstar is circumventing the agreement by stripping the Xbox version of the title Grand Theft Auto, and simply repackaging the game as Vice City.

Back in May, Take Two's CEO Jeffrey Lapin spoke about a major Rockstar title in development for the Xbox during the company's quarterly conference call with analysts. "We said that there will be an Xbox SKU from Rockstar in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2004 [Nov. to Jan.]," Lapin said, "but we're not going to comment on what it is at this point." It now looks like Vice City is that game.

Vice City's gameplay will be identical to the PC version that recently shipped, and might also include additional features like custom soundtracks and downloadable content.

Not only do they bring the game to XBOX, but add extras too!

does this put PS2 owner's to shame?

Yes.

Now no one can say "well...X-Box doesn't have GTA, so there!" anymore.

And if I remember correctly, Sony payed a good amount to have the exclusive rights to the GTA series. That makes it all the more amusing. :P

In other words, it might, maybe come out a year after the PS2 version? Oh JOY~!

Custom soundtrack is a curse in this game. The soundtrack was one of the best parts of the game, and now some stupid ass kid's gonna replace it all with the same 10 shitty ass songs he listens to all the time.

So someone being able to listen to music he wants to listen to rather than the game's soundtrack which is still available to him is a bad thing? I use custom soundtracks on games and also listen to the normal one(except Legends of Wrestling 2-horrible). You liking the soundtrack(as do I) doesnt mean everyone should have to listen to it. I don't see how custom soundtrack is ever a bad thing.

I don't play Final Fantasy...so the GTA games are really the only things (outside of an occasional Socom game...made much more infrequent now that Wolfenstein is out...and Pride every blue moon) are the only things that get my PS2 any play at all.

I might get this when it comes out just so I have one less system to plug in.

No, I have nothing against the XBox. Hell, the last 4 games I've played have all been for it. I just like to bitch, plus the news doesn't excite me since I've already owned the game for 9 months.

Um...might Sony have a few things to say about this?

I mean, I dunno about you, but if I paid what was probably an assload of money to some game company to make sure they only made the games for MY system, and then I learned they were just taking out part of the name and putting it on other systems...I'd be pissed as all fuck.

Hey, if people can sue over coffee, then I wouldn't be surprised if Sony tried to do something about this.

Oh boo hoo. They aren't going to lose any business...everyone already owns the game who owns a PS2.

I don't think that's what matters here. What matters is that they signed a contract saying that ONLY the PS2 was gonna have this game (as far as consoles go, at least).

And now, that's not true.

Lost business or not, RockStar isn't doing what they signed on to do. It's the principle.

Sony has GTA 4 as an exclusive. What do they hafto worry about?

that they don't fuck it up, and just becomes a shell of GTA 3.

I agree with you.

The feel and atmosphere of the game is meant to be 80s, down to the original soundtrack. To place a custom soundtrack onto the game, with songs from the now, isn't playing the game like it was intended to be played.

In a way, it does make sense to keep the 80's feel.

But if you want to keep the 80's feel, throw in some Tears for Fears, More Iron Maiden, Scorpions, Slayer, Megadeth, David Lee Roth (Ladies from Buffalo is amazing).

though some Police, and U2 would be amazing, and some Ozzy

The custom soundtrack would work if you added only cool 80's tunes that are missing.

Beat It, Just What I Needed, Take on Me, etc. There are still alot of good 80's songs missing in the game.

As for the exclusives rights I'm not sure this will fly. I mean why not just take any console exclusive game and change the name of it.

GTA 4 could then easily become "Car Thief" or what have you.

What other console exclusive games are there (for any systems)? And I'm talking 3rd party games.

All in all I don't think this is the last we've heard of this situation and could easily see Sony trying to take this to court (and possibly winning). A possible move by Sony could be to wait closer to a release date and then file suit. This could then cause an injunction and push the release date back pending a trial. So even if they were to then lose the lawsuit the game would miss the big holiday rush (along with the system sales because of the game).

I guess the X Box might have actually have 3 good games now...WOW.

I can't wait for True Crime, Streets of LA to come out for the Gamecube. At least its not a port of a year old game with a few extras tacked on to justify the price of $49.99 when GTA:VC will be on the value lineup for the PS2.

I still don't see what is so great about the Xbox.

I literally only bought the system for Halo. Besides that (and now Knights of the Old Republic probably), there literally isn't a darn thing on the system that interests me in the slightest.

I'll be honest, I'm probably biased, since I don't enjoy American/western/PC-style RPGs like Morrowind in the slightest, don't care about sports or racing games at all, and couldn't care less about playing games online against other people, and I've already beaten Vice City on PS2. Is there anything on the system besides Halo for me?

Halo is SO amazing that it alone + Halo 2 justifies my purchase in my mind, though, so I won't bitch.

I wants my traditional plot-driven RPGs, platform games, and cinematic Metal Gear Solid-esque adventures, dammit! My PS2 and Gamecube deliver these in droves, why can't Xbox at least have a few unique decent ones?

Speaking of third party titles exclusive to a specific console

The Capcom 5 -

Viewtiful Joe

Project Number 3 (P.N.03)

Killer 7

Dead Phoenix

RE 4

all exclusively for Nintendo Gamecube..

Capcom is being really nice to us Gamecube owners..

Im not so much interested in Dead Phoenix (which is sorta like Panzer Dragon..eh..) and Im not that into RE4, but the other 3 games are definitely on my must have lists when they come out (VJ and P.N.03 are out in Sept)

I highly doubt Sony will "agree" to this situation.

"Agree" = Not threaten to sue Rockstar for everything they have.

They'll settle out of court. All Rockstar has to do is flash a few $$$ and Sony will agree.

It's not like Vice City came out a month ago, is exclusive to PS2, and Rockstar decides to go with XBox and have it released in 2 months, hurting business for Sony.

It's a total different situation.

It isn't.

PS2 is out for the other two console's throats, and vice-versa. A small wad of cash isn't going to satisfy Sony, who DO NOT want plans for future GTA's to involve the X-Box and Gamecube. GTA is a proven commodity, so I'd doubt that Sony would agree to the franchise going multi-console in any fashion.

This idea makes NO sense at all. They can dodge the entire contract by simply removing the GTA logo? I know a few developers would've thought of this by now.

But this would ALL be negated if Sony agreed to the "GTA on X-Box" deal in the first place, since it DOES involve Microsoft and will probably affect their plans for future PC releases.
