The Mad Max Series

Recommended Posts

Recently I got a DVD of Mad Max, then pulled out my old tapes of Road Warrior and M.M. Beyond Thunderdome. I was actually quite surprised at the original movie and how good it was, given that I had only seen a cheesy dubbed version in pan and scan. Seen in widescreen it is startling to see how excellent the compositions in the film were.

The movie still has some problems...stuff like Toe Cutter not being the last to die (and his death in general), the dull scenes with Max and his wife, etc.

I think all 3 are very worthwhile movies, though the Road Warrior is probably the best of the 3. It is certainly the most sustained in terms of action and building to a finish.

Beyond Thunderdome has some of the best scenes in the series (the underground pig stuff, the Thunderdome battle) but the 2nd half of the film drags.

Anyway, what does everyone think of the Mad Max series?

I think Mad Max is pretty over-rated. It was great in it's day but it doesn't hold up to today's movies at all. Hell, it doesn't hold up to the great car movies that came before it either. I thought Thunderdome was just plain silly. Haven't seen Road Warrior in a while.

The Road Warrior was indeed the best of the three, though I liked how MM showed how the character transformed.

Thunderdome was just god awful.... the concept was all right I guess, but it was just very slow after the Thunderdome.

I only saw Thunderdome. It was pretty good, as far as action movies go. I kept wondering during the film if post-armmegeddon Australia is any different from regular Australia (just a joke, Australia is cool).

Hey, 250 posts. Australia is cool!

Oh make no mistake, both MM and Beyond TD are both imperfect films. The first movie doesn't have as much crazy car chase stuff as reputed, and is kinda slow going.

Thunderdome starts off gangbusters, but after the TD scene he gets tossed into the desert and the movie is boring as shit for about 30m.
