Queen mother dead

Yep. You can't ask for much more if you live to be 101 and die peacefully in your sleep.

How about dying in your sleep at say 40ish? Unless you really like the idea of spending several decades as a withered old prune with congenital Alzheimer's, immovable joints, sporadic organ failure, a dowager's hump, and liver spots.

Marney's right.  Why would anyone want to live until 101 when there is a good chance you will be stricken with senility at 80?

Not me. I want to put as much strain on America's health services before I go.

I saw it this afternoon, and I wasn't surprised that she died. Though what caught my attention was that she did a lot than I expected.

101 years, holy shit

She was a 101 year former figure-head ruler of a formerly great (by great I mean very powerful) country.  She died, so what?  I don't mean to be callous but I just don't see the significance of the Queen Mum or Diana or any other celebrity dying, while other people deaths go unnoticed or are ignored.  101 is a very long life and I hope she enjoyed it but it was time to go for her.

it's a big deal because she was a public figure, who did a lot for her people.

she really seemed to care about people and i for one will mourn her passing.

Also when Hitler quoted "She is the most powerful person in Europe" was very surprising.

"Queen Mum, had a lot of courage through WWII."

Funny, I thought that was Churchill thumbing his nose at the Nazi war machine and marching ahead, despite the fact that most of London was destroyed and his country teetered on the edge of oblivion.

"Outside, the storms of war may blow and the lands may be lashed with the fury of its gales, but in our own hearts this Sunday morning there is peace. Our hands may be active, but our consciences are at rest...This is not a question of fighting for Danzig or fighting for Poland. We are fighting to save the whole world form the pestilence of Nazi tyranny and in defence of all that is most sacred to man. This is no war for domination or imperial aggrandisement or material gain; no war to shut any country out of its sunlight and means of progress. It is a war...to establish, on impregnable rocks, the rights of the individual, and it is a war to establish and revive the stature of man."

Churchill said that, not the Queen.

The annoying thing is that over here in England, her death is being presented as some kind of tragedy - ok, it's sad when anyone dies, but she was a HUNDRED AND FUCKING ONE!

We're getting way too much coverage of her death, it's just stupid. When Diana died it was even worse. Ok, that was more of a tragedy, but in this country we place way too much importance of the Royal Family. I would rather be a republic.

If Regal was still comissioner do you think he would take down his picture from his office? And it must have not gotten alot of coverage because I didnt even know it happened until now. :D

It likely did not get alot of coverage in the States....the US not being a constitutional monarchy and all.

But it was big news on the Canadian papers for at least a week.

I personally think it spells the end of the British monarchy, and likely, Queen E. II will be the last one.

Liz 2 definately has her parents sense of duty, but is very old school when it comes to how monarchs should act, which is with a stiff upper lip and you don't show emotion or weakness in public.   That doesn't do much to endear her to modern masses.

And the rest of them....well....my theory is this:

As part of a figure-head political system, the need for royalty to live a more or less publicly spotless life is more is more important than anything else.   I know they are human, but they are given yearly stipends just to be royalty, and all that is really expected of them is that their behaviour is not front-page tabloid news.  Diana and Fergie started the trend, really, and it was cute to see them club hopping, but if royalty cannot be held up as an example, and at least *in appearance*, seem to be better (meaning not falling prey to all the same weaknesses of sex, drugs, drink, divorce, etc.) as everybody else, then why bother having them?

Charles will have to work on becoming well-loved by the people, and drill it into his boys heads that they have to be personable...yet not front page tabloid news....if they want the monarchy to survive.

Otherwise...QE2 will be the end of it, I think.

It wouldn't surprise me if some of those were real. They're great, really shows the sheep mentality of some people.
