A Face in the Crowd

I was flipping through channels and I came accross this old (50's) Andy Griffith movie, and since it was still in the beggining of the movie, I watched it, and was really surprised at how great this movie is. It's a shame it's not on DVD cause I'd pick it up in a second. Anybody else seen this movie?

I watched it on TCM one night. It's a great movie and still rings true today on some points. Griffith's performance is mind blowing and it truly is one of the best lead acting performances I've ever seen. To think that old Andy of Mayberry and Matlock had that type of nuiscanced tour de force in his is mind blowing. It's also a kick to see Walter Matthau in one of his earliest roles, but he doesn't have much to do here. A grossly ignored film and I think I had it listed on my 100 films everyone should see list awhile back. If not, I should have.

I love this movie. I taped it off TCM last fall and seriously believe it to be one of the finest films ever. Griffith's performance is indeed mindblowing, especially to me, since for the past 17 years I've watched The Andy Griffith Show about ten times a day (exaggeration, more like five or six) with my dad. Its a shame Griffith would never take another role like this again, as the stress of the film and the evil of his character followed him home. Its an even greateer shame that the man's in bad health these days. Hopefully the film will somehow be recognized before he passes away. One more shame: This movie garnered no awards, as the director was blacklisted as a result of the Communist Hollywood Scandal. He wouldn't testify in court, I believe.

I want to say that A Face in the Crowd was intended to be a teleplay, but then got turned into a feature film. I really couldn't find anything on that.

And after looking over Pray for the Wildcats. I have to find this damn movie. Andy Griffith, Robert Reed, William Shatner and Marjoe Gortner riding around Baja on dirtbikes has to be the greatest movie ever made.

Pray for the Wildcats is made only better by Griffiths performance has a dirty psychotic old man.
