They say they're going to San Juan full-time for next year an onward. Because you know, Puerto Ricans have so much disposable income to spend on overpriced MLB stuff. I know they love baseball there, but with the "changing economies of major-league sports," the love a location has for a specific sport has nothing to do with a team being there anymore. I voted for DC, but several of the choices up there would not be bad at all. Charlotte would probably be my second choice.

They CAN'T put the Expos in the AL West. It would create two leagues of 15, which would force one team in each league to be idle for three days out of the week. Either that or have interleague series be played ALL YEAR ROUND.

 

Any western destination would mess up the divisions anyway. (Do we really want another "Atlanta in the NL West" situation like we had until 93?)

 

I wouldn't mind taking another shot at there being a Washington Senators (this time as an NL team). If nothing else, it'd make Peter Angelos be all pissed off. Which would be fun. Then again, the reason why the first two Senators failed is because the Orioles so heavily outdrew them because the Sens tended to suck while the O's had The Four Horsemen pitching (Palmer and the other guys). But assuming the D.C. area can't support both the Orioles AND the Expos...

 

I say try to keep them east of the Mississippi, so as not to mess up the NL east too much. That'd mean Charlotte or Nashville (or Buffalo, I suppose). Though New Orleans would be kinda cool.

 

HOWEVER: No stupid "trendy" or "cool" new franchise names. The last two expansions have shown the MLB brain trust has exhausted its ability to come up with non-lame team names. Sure, many people are still asking "what the hell's an Expo?" but at least, after 30 years, we're kinda used to that one enough that it sounds kinda normal next to "Devil Rays."

*sigh* I sometimes think you just challenge me for the hell of it but what the hell and I when I typed that I immediately thought you would challenge me on it.

 

You see Babe Ruth hits 60 homeruns in 1927 and it stands for 34 years. Roger Maris hits 61 homeruns in 1961 and it stand for 37 years. Then comes 1998. McGwire & Sosa. It was great, every moment of it.

 

Then comes 1999...and the both hit over 61 homeruns again which takes away they specialness and the once in a lifetime type season that it was built as. Then comes 2001 and Barry Bonds hit 73 homeruns just three years after record is broken. Now again this is definently personal opinion but who really cared? Definently not as many people as they did in 1998. Now it could partly be attributed to that Bonds does rub people the wrong way and he does it make it tough to root for him but it definently had to do with that it had just been three years that we went through the chase for the record.

 

There is a reason why whenever someone gets a meager 25 game hitting streak that everyone starts bringing up DiMaggio and the 56 game hitting streak and that is because it has stood the test of time and is a truly special record and it will be an amazing moment when and if it is ever broken. The homerun record no longer has that magical feel to it. 61 meant something...73 doesn't really doesn't mean a damn thing unless it stands the test of a generation or two of sluggers. "Joke" may have been too strong of a word but really the single season homerun record isn't what it once was and Vladimir Guerrero hitting 80 homeruns in a minor league park wouldn't help things.

Good points, but imagine what happened when Ruth started hitting. The home run record went from 27, to 29, to 54, to 59 in the space of four years. In the last few years, the record was broke twice. Drastic, but it happens. I do thinks Bonds' record will stand quite a while, so it'll return to normal.

 

As for Vlad, I don't recall anyone hitting 80 home runs at any level. You'd think with all the different parks you see in the minors, it would've happened by now. I don't think any park could hand a hitter 30 extra home runs.

Montreal, Quebec (current) - they have shown that the city has no support for the team, the stadium sucks and players generally hate playing in Canada (higher taxes and prices).

 

San Juan, Puerto Rico (projected) - San Juan is a gimmick, and it won't stick permanently.

 

Washington, DC/ Northern VA - Peter Angelos will fight this tooth and nail, and in the end I think he'll win. While it would be awesome to have a team in DC (projected stadium site would have the Washington Monument in the skyline) I don't see it working.

 

Portland, Oregon - Im guessing that it rains a lot in Portland (someone correct me) so that means a retractable domed stadium. I would say Portland would be my second choice though off this list.

 

Salt Lake City, Utah - nah, for no good reason.

 

Charlotte, North Carolina - the minors are huge in Carolina. Charlotte could barely support an NBA team and they getting a second chance at that. Theres definitely a fanbase though but I say no because it would kill the minor league teams.

 

New Orleans, Louisiana - New Orleans got the Hornets but they are in danger of losing the S'aints. I don't think the city could support a baseball franchise.

 

Indianapolis, Indiana - a decent choice but overall I don't think it would work.

 

Nashville, Tennessee - Of this list, I think Nashville would be the city I would move the Expos to, but its probably the least likely to happen.

 

And not on the list, I think Oklahoma city would be a decent city for baseball..

Ya I'd have to look it up but several of the lower level minor leagues are shorter seasons than the majors. If you really think about it though if a guy is hitting that many homeruns in the minors he'd be called up to the majors pretty quick before he even reached 50.

 

Good point about Ruth and in 1920 they did change the balls and that's what caused a huge increase in homers in the 20's but Ruth was hitting more homeruns by himself than some teams back then. Ruth is bascially in a class by himself...no matter what Barry Bonds says.

And Bud already screwed up contraction already so don't expect to come around again anytime soon. If he hadn't gone after the Twins and instead went after the Marlins or Devil Rays to go along with the Expos it might have happened, with some sort of expansion of the rosters to please the union.

Montreal's Stadium is pathetic and Tropicanna Field isn't that much better.

 

Florida Marlins could use a new domed stadium because it rains a ton down there.

 

I cant think of any other stadums that suck...
