Griffey done for season

CINCINNATI -- Ken Griffey Jr. will miss the rest of the season after hurting his right ankle Thursday night, the latest in a string of injuries for the former All-Star.

Griffey

The Cincinnati Reds center fielder ruptured a tendon while running out a double in the sixth inning of a 5-4 loss to the Houston Astros. Griffey stood at the plate for a moment, as if he thought his drive to left-center field would be a home run, then had to speed up.

Griffey appeared to hurt himself as he rounded first base. He had been bothered by a sore tendon for about a week and had been getting treatment before games.

Griffey, 33, hit 13 home runs this year, raising his career total to 481 homers.

Going into Thursday's game, Griffey had homered in the last five games in which he had an at-bat.

"It's a shame," Cincinnati manager Bob Boone said. "He was just starting to get his swing back. He was ready to take off."

Once thought to be a threat to break Hank Aaron's record of 755 career homers, Griffey has dropped from the game's elite because of injuries.

He hit .247 with 26 RBI in 53 games for the Reds this season.

Griffey will have surgery Friday at The Good Samaritan Hospital, the Reds said, with team physician Dr. Timothy Kremchek and foot and ankle specialist Dr. James Amis operating. Griffey was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Cincinnati said Griffey also will have arthroscopic reconstructive surgery on his right shoulder in about two weeks. He dislocated the shoulder April 5 while diving for a ball and was on the disabled list until May 12.

Injuries to both legs and his right shoulder have caused Griffey to miss 140 games since the 2000 season, including 33 this year.

I'm beginning to feel bad for Griffey. I hope someday he returns to form.

Time to retire. A lesson to all those who hype the likes of Dontrelle Willis when he's barely started his career. Here's a guy in Griffey who just four years ago was on his way to being declared the best player ever and now he's borderline HOF due to injuries.

I am shocked. I say shocked by this.

Seriously, everyone and their mother knew the reason they haven't traded Jose Guillen yet, it just took a little longer to happen than normal.

Question: Is Ken Griffey Jr. going to go down as the biggest "what could've been" ever?

I can't think of another athlete who looked to be the best player ever and just fell off a cliff. Griffey is also the reason I am not jumping on the ARod is going to break every record bandwagon. You never know when something will happen.

It's funny that he used to be my favorite player, and now I forget what team he plays for.

That said, I feel bad for him too. What did he do to deserve these non-stop injuries?

Hold a grudge against a man that was dead ten years (Billy Martin) and when he realized that was an absurd thing to do, try and implicate someone (Steinbrenner) that had nothing to do with it?

I don't follow NFL is close, but is Terrell Davis (or whatever the Broncos guy was) a fair comparison?

and the Saku Koivu of the NHL

Well, Koivu had cancer, didn't he? That's kind of reaching baron.

I would think Davis is a good comparison a 2000 yard rusher with shitty knees, getting crippled in the prime of his career.

You all have heard of Orlando Cepeda, right?

Put up better numbers than Aaron in his first few years, but got derailed by injuries. Hit about 350 or so homers.

Griffey may want to think about changing positions or moving to the AL

Well Griffey for a an extended length of time was the best player in the game and still might end up in the HOF. I think a better example of players who were at the top of the game for a short period of time, like a year or two, but then quickly fell from the top like a Jose Canseco.

I don't think moving to the AL would help Griffey because he can't even run the bases without getting hurt. He just needs to retire while people still have a shred of the old Griffey in their minds. Insurance will pay off most of what he is owed anyway so he will get his money.

With Canseco and Belle though everyone thought they would be great, but with Griffey he was seen as a legitimate threat to the best player ever moniker.

And Belle is still on the Orioles roster I think, because he is getting paid and the Orioles have to keep him on the roster to collect the insurance. If they let him go they will owe the whole amount of his contract instead of the 30% I think they pay now.

I don't think Cepeda s a good comparison. He's one of a number of players who wear down over time. Griffey didn't wear down. He collapsed.

I get a perverse pleasure out of watching things go wrong for him.

Hopefully next season after Griffey has a couple of healthy weeks the Reds will be smart enough to trade him.

I also hope for that so I can see every ESPN reporter talk about how you can't trade Griffey, because if healthy he is a great player and you have to find a way to get him in your lineup everyday. Fucking ESPN has been getting on my nerves lately.

Ya know, when you think about it, alot of the second-generation guys today had fathers on the Yankees (Bonds, Griffey, Alomar, Alou) and none of the sons actually played for the Yankees.

I don't hate him because he never played for the Yanks.

I hate him because he's a cocky, lying sack of shit.

I never said you were mad over a lack of Griffey.

I'd face it here.. Griffey was not the same after leaving the Kingdome

He never got a full season with the Reds did he? Wasn't it the spring after signing with them that he first went down?

Hey Rob. The Twins won tonight.

Someone mentioned Terrell Davis. Did Davis have a major knee injury in either college or h.s.?

Just to add a little....well injury to injury, the Reds placed Austin Kearns on the DL. Something to do with his rotator cuff, hopefully ESPN.com throws up a newsbit.

Earlier Thursday, Reds outfielder Austin Kearns went on the DL, retroactive to July 9, because of an inflamed right rotator cuff, an injury that has bothered him since a May 21 collision at the plate with Atlanta's Ray King.

I was thinking the same thing. I think all but one of these injuries (the shoulder on a dive in the outfield) came while running the bases. ESPN showed all of them and a frew came while rounding third and this one while rounding first, maybe this is why posing after you think you've hit a HR is a bad idea. Jogging and hten having to speed up when you have bad legs is stupid. He should just run at 3/4 speed aroud the bases and at least save his legs somewhat. But then people will bust on him for not hustling.

BTW, Sault you're way too bitter about Griffey refusing to sign with the Yankees. I don't hold a grudge against Bernie for the shit he pulled against the Red Sox a few years ago. But you can have your inury prone and overpaid centerfielder and the Reds can have their's.

Not only that, but back in 1999 the fans put him on the All-Time Outfield with Ruth, Aaron, Williams, Mays, DiMaggio, Mantle, Cobb and Rose. (Griffey finished 8th) Ahead of Musial (who was selected by MLB) Clemente and Barry Bonds (a severe case could be made that Bonds belonged at that point over Griffey and Bonds finished a distant 18th in that voting)

And now, if you say Griffey is better than Bonds you would be laughed at!

BTW I can't believe I'm hearing people say it was a disgrace that fans in Cincy booed him when he limped off the deal.

I mean give me a break

A) The guy came in as the "greatest active player" had one very decent season but the last three years have been injury riddled and certaintly not worth his lofty contract, which intrestingly enough was considered "cheap" at the time

B) The guy has not been the "great guy" that he seemed to be in Seattle. No smiles, no laughing, no fun loving act. Its been surlyness, bitter interviews, being considered a cancer in the clubhouse, a "24 and 1" guy and this is his home town for crying out loud

C) Considering that the Mariners have contended for the postseason every year since, not to mention having one of the greatest single seasons of all-time, and the Reds since playing in a Wild Card Play-In Game in 1999 fell off the radar in the same timespan, now you can say the same thing for say A-Rod's Rangers but it does say something when in 2001 the Mariner GM says he wouldn't trade Mike Cammeron BACK to the Reds for Griffey Jr.

I swear some radio hosts just have no clue about situations and just say things without checking all the facts

BTW this was Yankee announcer Michael Kay who just may be the biggest player kiss-uper in the NYC market
