Guest Retro Rob Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 Two Democratic lawmakers proposed a radical new bill yesterday that would put people who share song files over the internet in jail. The bill has been proposed by Michigan Rep. John Conyers and California Rep. Howard Berman and be aimed at stopping the widespread use of downloadable music, movies, etc. that have damaged the entertainment industry, mainly music. The bill goes under the assumption that copyrighted work made available through a computer network was copied by others at least 10 times for a total retail value of $2,500. That would bump the activity from a misdemeanor to a felony, carrying a sentence of up to five years in jail. It would also outlaw the practice of videotaping a movie in the theater, a favorite illicit method of copying movies. "While existing laws have been useful in stemming this problem, they simply do not go far enough," said Conyers, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee. Credit: Billboard

Guest JHawk Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 Someone else has already said it in another thread, but with RIAA making more in a year than I'll ever see in 100 lifetimes even with all the file sharing, who in their right mind could have sympathy for them? Oh wait, we're talking about politicians here. A little grease in the palm and they'll try to get anything passed.
Guest redbaron51 Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 :downloads "Do You Really Want Me" by Culture Club: wait... i'm Canadian, and this doesn't affect me... *delete* *inactive function* ...
Guest Nevermortal Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 The RIAA will be vilified beyond belief. You mean to tell me that America will still have any shred of sympathy for them when they're getting their Champagne Enemas and sitting on chairs with 100 dollar bills lodged inside when Joe and Jane Public are having their homes and cars repossessed because little Jonnie downloaded Ludacris? To quote Wayne Campbell, shyeah, and monkeys might fly out of my BUTT.
Guest kkktookmybabyaway Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 Wow, and Orrin Hatch wasn't involved...
Guest Lil Naitch Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 Well, I got no money, but I do have an Uncle who is a lawyer. Just Bring It, Bitch!
Guest I'm That Damn Zzzzz Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 Won't happen, Democrats can't afford to lose any more voters...
Guest Mad Dog Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 Yeah let's just throw more non-criminals into the already overcrowded prison system. Hell these file sharers are so terrible why not have them share cells with murders and rapists.
Guest Ripper Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 Well, I don't know... Everyday millions of children go missing or die around the world... Everyday millions of songs are downloaded and shared.. Coincidence? If you are file sharing, you are killing children... Harmless? This message brought to you by the RIAA.
Guest BDC Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 Y'know, I'm working in the Senate in DC as we speak and it really kills me to see stuff like this. I'm just an intern... and I can't go and scream at these people, even though a walk to their office would take like ten minutes tops.
Guest MarvinisaLunatic Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 I wanna see them put 12 year olds in jail. I guess the parents would end up in jail. Then you have a bunch of parentless kids running around = a bunch of future criminals. Man, I can't wait for this to pass.

Guest NoCalMike Posted July 21, 2003 Report Posted July 21, 2003 Looks like a jail/prison is going to replace every corner liquor store, I mean hell with all the file-sharers out there. This has got to be the stupidest idea on this topic yet.
Guest MarvinisaLunatic Posted July 22, 2003 Report Posted July 22, 2003 I think its funny they plan on issuing subpeonas a day. At that rate it will only take em about 1,000 years to get everyone, clogging up the legal system. Im sure lawyers are happy though.
Guest NoCalMike Posted July 22, 2003 Report Posted July 22, 2003 What about kids under 14 downloading mp3s that have parents that don't even know how to turn on a computer. I mean the police trying to explain to the parents what is going on.......
