Survivor series 93

Who were Shawn Michaels Knights in his match against the Hart Brothers?  Were the mask men local indy guys or regular WWF jobbers?

Whose idea was it to have Ray Combs as guest commentor?  The poor guy had trouble reading his cue cards during his 10 minute Family Feud Survey and attempt at being a heel announcer was probably the worst celebrity apperance ever on a WWF PPV.  Also when Shawn Michaels was taunting the Hart Family at ringside, Ray would say "come on Shawn, get in the ring"

Heavenly Bodies vs Rock & Roll Express was a surprising good match for the SMW Tag Titles.  JR and Monsoon did one of the best announcing jobs ever at selling the match.  They went over the rules differences between WWF and SMW, such as the throw over the top rope DQ.  Also JR and Monsoon went over the history of Jim Cornette vs R&R feud that began in the early 80s, with references of the Midnight Express.

Well the Red Knight was Barry Horowitz and the Blue Knight was Greg Valentine. There are some disputes over who the Black Knight, with many saying it was Glenn Jacobs (Kane) and others saying it was someone else, whose name escapes me right now. Not sure which one is right, but I know that it's still disputed over to this day.

The "other" Black Knight was Jeff Gaylord.

About Ray Combs.  The WWF must have liked his performance at WM VIII.  Or they wanted to bring out the host of "Family Feud" because the Hart "Family" was "Feuding" with Lawler (replaced by HBK) and his Royal Knights.

The whole card was pretty good minus the Doinks.

Red Knights was Barry Horowitz, Blue Knight was Greg Valentine and the Black knight i think is Glen Jacobs, about the same size.

That was an awesome show. I was there live, albeit in the VERY TOP balcony of the Garden. It always seems to get trashed because of the Doinks crap. Well, thats my two cents. -Jim

Guest DEEP THOUGHT

The 1993 Survivor Series showed how much of a failure the "All American, Made in the USA" Lex Luger push was. Notice how everybody was rushing towards the exits during the main event as soon as it came down to Borga vs. Luger.

I thought that the card was pretty weak overall. The family feud match was dull, the Doink fiasco was horrendous and the All Americans vs. Foreign Fanatics match was poor, except for, shockingly enough, the YOKOZUNA/UNDERTAKER segment. The Smoky Mountain tag title match was great, and I did enjoy seeing Kevin Nash tossing Sean Waltman around in the opening match. Not a terrible card, but not notable at all.

Well much like several of the not so great WWF cards of the early 90's, Survivor Series '93 holds a place in my heart, as I've seen it dozens of times. Now let's take a look through the card shall we?

- Before we even have the first match, there is already something notable in the fact that it is Bobby Heenan's final WWF PPV (I don't really count WM 17). He goes out with a bang though, as he is hilarious for the entire show and actually makes most of it watchable.

- Macho Man, Razor Ramon, Marty Jannetty and 1-2-3 Kid vs. IRS, Diesel, Rick Martel and Adam Bomb- Now this was a good opener IMO and they crowd seemed happier to have Savage out their instead of Perfect (who was scheduled to be in the match). Some parts drag a tad, but the finish is pretty intense and the quick two elimination sequence to finish the match has always been a favorite of mine.

- Hart Family vs. Shawn Michaels and the three Knights- Match is really boring, even the parts with Bret in there. I liked it at the time because Bret and Shawn were favorites of mine, but I know it was nothing special and even a bit of a let down. Owen's first signs of wanting to step out of Bret's shadow happens here, so I think that could be labeled as notable. Heenan's commentary on this match is GOLD and is worth the rental alone. I'm telling you, the Hart parents bring out the A material from Bobby.

- Heavenly Bodies vs. Rock 'n' Roll Express- Good match for all the SMW fans and a nice change of pace, as this one is pretty entertaining even to the casual WWF fan. Gorilla and JR do announcing for this one and I wish they had brought over Gorilla and have him do commentating with Bobby, but they had the whole feud thing happening, which kinda tore me up since they had always had the whole loving hate thing going on. Anyway, onto the thing that most people seem to remember the show for......

- 4 Doinks vs. Bam Bam Bigelow, Bastion Booger, Headshrinkers- Ok this is WWF comedy at its lowest but I'm gonna let you in on a deep dark secret of mine.......As a child I liked this match. Ok I said it, flame away if you will, but I think anyone who saw this as a kid enjoyed it and to say you always hated it, is just the wannabe smark inside of you. I don't like the match anymore, but once again, Heenan's commentary is fun and most people trash the show because of this one match. Fuckin smarks.

- All Americans vs. Foreign Fanatics- Ok this match blew and sadly this is who they felt were main eventers. The Steiners look like complete jobbers in this match, Lex is at his WWF worst and I won't even get into how stupid it is that half of the Foreign Fanatics team aren't even foreign. Lousy match and one mark moment for me was Taker no selling Yokozuna, after he slammed his head into the stairs. Heenan's reaction is hilarious as well.

To me the show is ok and should be viewed simply to all of those cynics who only remember WCW Bobby Heenan and still insist that Jerry Lawler is the funniest color man of all time. Just about everything except for the last two matches are watchable. I've said my piece, I'm done here.

Man do I have a story about this PPV.The PPV pre view show blacked out on me and it was out for the rest of the night,so I ordered the replay that was on from 11pm-2am on Thanksgiving(Eve)and I watched that and then I got up at like 7 or 8am the next morning to drive down to New York City and go to the Thanksgiving Day Parade.I was kind of tired at the end of the day,but the momentum was still going from the PPV because I used to go crazy for WWF PPVs back in those days.

Thanks.

Does anybody know if Horowitz and Gaylord portrayed the Knights on the UK Tour of 1993 (I saw them lose to the Smoking Gunns at a house show)
