Guest bravesfan Report post Posted July 19, 2003 ... ... ... :takes deep breath: OK. I've held ownership of an HP Pavillion for close to a year now; I've heard all the horror stories about HP and Compaq, so I was a little apprehensive about making this purchase in the first place last August. Much to my surprise, the Pavillion has been consistent in its speed, memory and storage. But, it isn't without its problems...one of which plagued me since the first boot of this computer. With every boot of my computer, an error message pops up at the "Windows XP User Log-In" screen; it states that my local profile is corrupted and that I am being logged on with a temporary profile for the time being. The first time this occured (last August), it simply went away a few weeks later after I was sent a disk directly from HP to quell an unrelated problem with an "Unmountable Boot" . No harm done, until it hit me again last month. THIS TIME AROUND - it has repeatedly erased all of my cookies and security features (Kazaa ID, resets log-ins to TSM, Yahoo, etc.) While that's not anything to complain over, it has ERASED some of the files laying around on my Desktop (I have used "Documents and Settings" in the past to access other temporary profiles, but this time, the files are completely gone. With the last re-boot, I lost over 750 MB of wrestling videos. The only way I've avoided a larger disaster, is by using the "Sleep" function on my computer to shut the computer off, but keep the current (temporary) profile logged in. It saves me alot of trouble, but I know that after my computer freezes in a few days, the process will be FORCED to start over again. As I'm typing this, I'm racing to back-up any files I can onto CD-R's, to "brave the storm". If anyone has any idea what I'm going through, and can help me solve this PERMANENTLY, I'm sure I can arrange some type of payment or gift in return. Thanks guys. Guest DrTom Report post Posted July 19, 2003 NEVER store anything under the Documents and Settings/Profilename folders. If your profile gets fucked, it's common that whatever you're storing gets fucked right along with it. I've never encountered profile corruption in XP, but we deal with it at work (in Win2000) from time to time. Basically, we copy the relevant information in the user's profile somewhere else on the hard drive, trash the profile entirely, and have them login again, which recreates it from scratch. Guest MrRant Report post Posted July 19, 2003 Go into the temporary profile and you could try a system restore to the date it started happening.
