Did any raw matches ever end "during the break"?

Recommended Posts

Guest Your Olympic Hero1

Remember in the golden days of Monday Night RAW when in the middle of a match Vince would tell us "if the match ends, we'll make sure to show you what happened WHEN WE COME BACK!", and then it cut to commercial?  Did any matches actually end during the commercial break?  Or in that case, did anything notible happen where it constituted a replay being shown when they came back from break?  I mean, they should have at least had SOMETHING happen once during commercial to make it seem "real" (or at least not taped).

Not that I can remember, but I could see that happening, I see your point I think it would be cool if something like that was to happen,it would give the match a certain historical feeling to it.

Thanks.

No matches never ended during the break.  Usually the wrestlers would just go into a resthold after they were told of the commercial break and then the face would fight out of the hold to get the crowd going before the break ended.  Sometimes they would do a big spot during the break and show a replay after they came back on.  No they shouldn't have done a finish during the break because it would piss of the people watching who didn't get to see the finish "live".

You are correct how many times have they came back from a commercial and they are in a sleeper hold,it seems like every time.

The only time I remember a match ending "during the break" was on WCW Saturday Night the day before Superbrawl III. It was Ricky Steamboat vs. Flyin' Brian (Pillman) in a Lumberjack match. When WCW returned from break JR & Larry Zybsko (Sp?) showed a replay of the finish. I think Steamboat won, but I'm not sure.

I'm pretty sure I saw that happen on an episode of Thunder.  Not sure when it was but I believe it was in late 99 or early 2000.

I somewhat remember that but I just thought we were talking about the WWF,I think it might have happened a couple of times in WCW in the early 1990s.

Thanks.

I'm surprised no one else remembers but yes, one old school match did end during a break.

It was actually a taped match and not live so they were trying to make it seem like even the taped Raw's were live.

What was the match?

I actually don't quite remember... but it might have been Mr. Perfect beating Bastion Booger.

I don't know about Raw, but I have seen it once or twice on Nitro and WCW Saturday Night.

WCW did something like that with a Hogan-Giant match.  I think the match went long and the show ended, but they showed the finish during the commercials of the next show.

I remember once I was watching a match were it ended during the break and they just replayed the end of it.

That was the infamous "Robin Hood" match. If you wanted to see the finish of the match you had to watch the new Robin Hood show. Which pretty much meant watching the whole show. As it took forever to see the finish. The match ended in a DQ after an nWo run-in. I think WCW said "I'm sorry" to the fans for that.

That happened during the "King of Kings" match the night after KOTR 98. It was HHH/Owen/Shamrock and they went to break, came back and showed a replay of a Triple Sleeper followed by a jawbreak from Owen to all of them. Look really coo.

I saw an episode of Mania over a friend’s house years ago which had face Mr Perfect vs heel Rick Martel. That match was from Raw and when the break in Mania ended, their was a clip shown of the finish and apologies for it ending during the break.

Well I don't really recall a match from RAW's early days ending during the break, but I do recall that a decision was overruled during the commercial break. It was Shawn Michaels defending his IC title against Marty Janetty. It was from the summer or fall of 1993, as I recall Janetty had already beaten Michaels for the title in the spring and had lost it back just weeks later to Michaels. This was the rematch and at one point Janetty won the match via pinfall and was awarded the title, despite the fact that Michaels' foot had been on the rope. When they came back from the break, Vince informed viewers that the referee had looked at the replay and saw that Michaels foot had indeed been on the rope when the pinfall had been made. The ref overruled the decision and ordered that the match continue. Nevermind the fact that the WWF didn't have an instant replay rule and to the best of my knowledge, they didn't at any point after this match. But you know wrestling. The adjust the rules to accomadate the situation at hand. Anyway, Michaels ended up retaining, although it may have been a result of him getting counted out or disqualified. If he did win via pinfall, I'm almost sure that it was tainted. Definately a downer for me at the time, despite the fact that I was a huge Michaels mark. Oh well, Janetty regaining the title wouldn't have been a good decision anyway, as he kind of floated among the midcard for the next few months before getting fired again in 1994.

Way to steal my name there "YourOlympicHero1"

First of all - I've been using the name "Your Olympic Hero1" on message boards since 1999.  Second, the only reason I use the name "Your Olympic Hero1" as opposed to "Your Olympic Hero" is because people gank names as soon as new message boards open, and usually aren't active on the board at all (haven't seen you post before this week).  So what I'm trying to say is - grow the fuck up.

I do remember a Rick Martel-Mr. Perfect match ending during the break that someone already mentioned.  Early 1993 when they were still doing the Manhattan Center.

Also, The 1-2-3 Kid and Marty Jannetty had gotten the pin on The Quebecers on 1/10/1994 during the break, but a second referee ran out and said the foot was on the bottom rope.  We ended getting a title change out of it anyway.

I somewhat remember the Mr.Perfect Vs. Rick Martel match too,but I mean it is a pretty rare thing to see a match end like that.Today they never go to a comercial break during a match,so that would never happen.

Thanks.

If I may go the opposite direction on the topic of this thread, I recall on an early RAW where the feature match was the Undertaker vs. Skinner. They ended up going off the air while the match was still in progress and they promises to let us know the outcome of the match the following week. Of course they didn't, but it wasn't really in doubt that the Undertaker came out the victor. No real point to the this thread, but I thought since we were talking about unseen finishes, this could apply.

And how have you been using the name since 1999? Kurt made his debut at the Survivor Series in '99... and didn't have much of a fan following til a couple months into 2000.  But I'm sure you were a fan from the start, right?

And as far as me not posting enough, I've posted quite a bit more than you... so shut the hell up.

I remember back in September of '95, Razor Ramon and the 1-2-3 Kid had a match and Razor won it, only to have the kid demand it be restarted.  So they did, and when we came back, they showed a reply of Razor beating the kid during the break.  The match was then again restarted and Ramon won again.  This was, of course, during the Kid's beginning stages of turning heel.  Anyone else remember?

There was a Match between Perfect and Martel in Summer of 93 that ended during the break and yes, there was Razor/123 match in 1995 if I recall and this was the match that turned Kid Heel.

I remember, prolly around late '92, on an episode of WCW Saturday Night, it was Larry Zbyszko and Brian Pillman against I THINK Arn Anderson and Bobby Eaton.  They went to commercial, and then came back, with Zbyszko screaming bloody murder because his arm had been snapped in the ropes by the heel team.  Tony had said the match went to a no contest during the break, and this "unfortunate" incident occured.  Correct me if I'm wrong.

That could have happened.  I seem to remember something like that happening and the 1-2-3 Kid turning heel shortly after I think.  I seem to remember Razor kicking someone's ass over and over so that must be it.

If I remember correctly, 1-2-3 Kid officially turned heel when he was the guest referee for Razor vs. Sid on RAW.  Sid pinned Ramon with a super fast count from Kid.

Yeah, Kid's official heel turn was right before Survivor Series '95, and I think the matches with him and Razor were from October actually, I think maybe even the night after the IYH PPV.
