My star ratings

Recommended Posts

Guest JAxlMorrison

Since I didn't get into the webcast until around 9 (thanks again btw), here are the matches I was able to see, and my ratings for them.

Haas/Benjamin vs. Mysterio/Kidman *** 1/2

Sable vs. Stephanie 1/2 * (only cause Steph broke out a Mr. Perfect necksnap)

Taker vs. Cena **1/2

Vince vs. Zach Gowen ***

Angle vs. Show vs. Lesnar ***

I'm a bit undecided on Eddie/Benoit as I just can't remember anything bad about it, I might just be clouded by Eddie's insanely great selling of everything, the Bar Room Brawl gets a ***1/2 for comedy and about **1/2 for actual action, Noble and Gunn get a generous ** for something that was at least refreshingly spotty.

I might go higher on Taker vs Cena because they did work the story well and any time Taker bleeds out of the mouth thats a plus.

I think my Vince-Zach rating was kind of high because I was marking out like a schoolgirl for Zach. Plus the 4 alarm bladejob (it was wasn't it?) that Vinnie did should count for a half star all by itself.

And Cena-Taker would've touched *** had Cena won.

Wow, you have to explain to me how Steph-Sable got a higher rating then Vince-Zach.......that is almost mind boggling to me.

I was pleasantly surprized, this is one of the best PPV's I can remember.

Spoiler (Highlight to Read):

Benoit vs. Guerrero--***3/4. Really good, not great.

Billy Gunn vs. Jamie Noble--*3/4. About what I expected, Billy REALLY scared me on a spot or 2.

A.P.A. Invitational--*. And that's for Spanky dancing on the bar and Funaki's ending. I DESPISE the Brother Love character, and not in the good heel way either. I never saw his appeal. Never.

TWGTT vs. Rey/Kidman--***1/4. Fine stuff.

Steph vs. Sable--*1/2. More decent than it had any right to be. Kinda like Steph/Trish with a * handicap.

Undertaker vs. John Cena--**1/2. I didn't like how Cena took all that punishment and just eventually no-sold all of it, but considering who he was wrestling it was forgivable. Better than Taker vs. Angle from 3 years ago. I still wish Cena had gone over though.

Vince McMahon vs. Zach Gowen--*. Gowen is utterly exposed as the 2-move wonder that he is. Totally bored with this match. WAY too long. Nice gusher though, Vince.

Brock vs. Kurt vs. Show--***3/4. Not quite the 3-way from last year, but still quite entertaining. The ending caught me completely off guard. Typical "1 guy is KOed for awhile until they switch off" stuff, but these guys can make that seem okay.

Overall--slight disappointment, but EASILY the best PPV since Mania. Thumbs up.

EDIT: Once I posted I figured I'd be safe and add spoiler tags. Is that right? Do I need to?

I can't believe a one legged wrestler is being criticized for his moveset.

May I ask how you saw the show? You're an Australian and to the best of my knowledge, Vengeance was not shown anywhere in this country at all.

Should we just accept that he's a mediocre wrestler then just because he's got 1 leg? Fuck that.

Vince spends the whole time working the leg, but when Zach makes the comeback he hops around on it like normal because he HAS to. I don't see any way to work around the leg.

Keep him in Cruiser spotfests if you must use him, but any match with psych involved is going to be a joke with him, because of his inability to sell the leg AND do his moves.

It's like RVD x 10.

Ok, here's my star ratings:

Benoit/Guerrero: ****

-Excellent match, would have been higher without Rhyno being the finish.

Noble/Gunn: *1/4

-Not bad, just boring.

Bar room brawl: 1/2*

-Too long, not enough entertaining spots.

Sable vs. Steph *1/4

-Good women's match, but a lame finish and not much from a T&A standpoint.

Filthy Animals vs. WGTT ****1/4

-Absolutely amazing, best tag match since No Mercy.

Cena vs. Undertaker **3/4

-A little sloppy, but still a very good match.

Gowen vs. McMahon *1/2

-Vicious legit blood, too bad Vince couldn't finish the match properly.

Lesnar vs. Angle vs. Big Show ****1/2

-Best triple threat match I've ever seen; much better than Taker/Angle/Rock.

Final thought: Great PPV, best of the year. No way to anticipate how good this show would be.

I won't do star ratings until I can watch the show again more objectively.

Chris Benoit vs. Eddy Guerrero

Great match until it got a little goofy at the end. Eddy deserved the win, but I didn't like Rhyno's run-in. He and Benoit haven't come to blows since the first round of the tournament a month ago, and I needed more of a build up for his heel turn. Not a challenger to Benoit/Angle at the Rumble for MOTY, but it is still probably **** at least.

Noble/Gunn

It didn't keep my attention. It just seemed like a regular Smackdown match to me. Nothing actively bad about it, it was just sort of there.

Bar Room Brawl

Fun for what it was, and it wasn't too long. The Brother Love stuff at the beginning wasn't necessary. My main problem was with the ending. It wasn't made clear the Simmons was eliminated, and the APA really should have been co-winners. Much better than the Redneck Triathalon.

WGTT vs. Filthy Animals

Best match of the show. Like the crowd, I thought for sure that the Top Rope Rana was the ending, even though going in I didn't give the challengers a chance. It was just a great clean standard wrestling match that went above and beyond the good stuff that this division has showed on Smackdown. This also did what the 6-Man at No Way Out and the ladder match at Judgment Day were meant to do, turn Haas & Benjamin into stars. The Smackdown Tag Titles are now officially the best titles in the promotion.

Sable vs. Steph

I was following asleep in this match and the A-Train run-in didn't make any sense at all. Worst match of the show by far, but at least it was fairly short.

John Cena vs. Undertaker

Taker did a good job of dragging Cena to a watchable match (make no mistake, this was all Taker) but the end still should have come with the FU. I get the feeling they changed the ending after Taker's dad died.

Zach Gowen vs. Vince McMahon

This is like McMahon/Hogan from Mania without the Safeco crowd. A fun match for marks, and that's about it.

Brock Lesnar vs. Kurt Angle vs. Big Show

As far as Triple Threat matches go, this falls somewhere in between KOTR 2001 & Vengeance 2002. Big Show did his part, but it was really about the other two guys. I still think that Lesnar is the man of the future, but WWE better run Kurt as long as he can, and provided he has a decent length reign, there is no reason that he can't do great things with the belt.

Overall: I think the best thing that can be said about this card is that it has three matches that are better than the RAW MOTY (Jericho/HBK from Mania). If that doesn't show Smackdown's superiority, nothing will.

I was working on some other projects during the Gowen/Vince thing, but it looked like Vince got the VanZackinator to he head, and the blood immediately began to pour out. Was that a bladejob, or just the chair connecting the wrong way?

I thought I'd LOVE the APA Brawl, but I found it to be kind of bland. A few funny spots, such as Funaki, O'Haire and the cue sticks, etc. but I still found it to be rather uninteresting when I thought it would be awesome.

Most of us took the OTHER approach to the APA braw...esp RRR who went ahead and pretty much said "it will be the worst thing ever"...when in fact it was decent comedy segment.

There was no way that was a blade job. The blood was pouring instantly. Unless Vince just completely stabbed himself just as the chair hit.

Why is it that Vince goes Hard and we all question it...or least one guy did

I don't know what it was about it. The segments leading up to it (Kanyon, Brooklyn Brawler, O'Haire/Rhyno, "A Japanese interview who wrestles part time) all had me laughing. But when it came to the match, it just seemed like a big clusterfuck that was nowhere near as funny as the Hardcore Title thing at Wrestlemania I believe a couple years back.

I was thinking that too (in regards to Vince's head). When they showed the replay, Vince's head just immediately began to drip with blood. Beautiful sight, though it'll be funny if Gowen gets demoted to Velocity jobbing to A-Train for it.

I wasn't watching it closely, and the thing impressed the hell out of me.

Also, does anyone here think the WWE booking crew just decided in the past couple days to turn Rhyno? He was invited to the Bar Room brawl, and if they the turn in mind two weeks ago, it would've been O'Haire against Spanky or something instead.

Nah, it wasn't his fault. It was Vince's fault for having the wrong side of the chair facing him. And if they are going to demote him far, they might as well release him because his novelty value is gone.

Ultimo Dragon Vs. Kanyon *1/4

Chris Benoit Vs. Eddie Guerrero *** Once again the WWE curtain jerks with a title match. *sigh*

Jamie Noble Vs. Billy Gunn ** It was high energy but too much nonsense

APA stuff was mildly humorous. I marked for Brother Love & Doink. No star ratings for a non-match.

Benjamin/Haas Vs. Kidman/Mysterio **3/4 A lot better than I thought it would be.

Sable Vs. Steph 1/2* Not much of a catfight, but I don't think anyone expected it to be. I thought it may have been better than that however. A-Train. *blah*

John Cena Vs. The Undertaker **1/2 A lot better than expected.

Zack Gowen Vs. Vince * It was better than Sable/Steph just because of Vince's juicing. Damn, that was vicious. I hate fucking Zack and his sickening hobble.

Brock Lesnar Vs. Big Show Vs. Kurt Angle **1/4 I'm glad Angle won. Too many finisher spots for my liking. Brock sucks at blading. Big Show sucks at jumping.

Still, best PPV of the year. Better than Wrestlemania in my opinion. Better than Royal Rumble. Obviously better than Badd Blood. I give Angle/Benoit from RR ****, and nothing on this card reached that high, but that card was better overall. At least to me.

Benoit vs. Guerrero: **** - Not as good as I expected, as it took them a while to get going, but it was great once it did.

Gunn vs. Noble: ** - Short and sweet with some comedic overbooking.

Bar Brawl: ** - Okayish stuff with some funny spots, but between them it was just walking around and SUPER weak brawling.

Tag Titles: *** - Maybe I'll watch this again since it's getting higher reviews, but it took a while to really get going.

Steph vs. Sable: 1/4* - Yea, whatever. Finish sucked beyond belief.

Taker vs. Cena: *** - Good long match that put both men over. Too bad Cena didn't win, though.

Vince vs. Gowen: **1/2 - My head hurt as to why Vince worked the leg, but the spots were cute and both characters were played very well.

Triple Threat: **** - Fun match overall. Brock and Angle totally covered Show's shittiness as only they can and all the spots were worked into the flow of the match quite nicely.

Wow, very nice show with only one sucky match, and that was short. Great job for SD when the first Raw only PPV is considered.

Not to be a jerk, and it IS your opinion but...WHAT THE FUCK?! All Your Match ratings were given almost *+ higher by everyone else, except for the Gunn/Noble match and Vince/Gowen.
