Adult Swim

But even Adult Swim butchers shows like Bebop or Kenshin in almost every episode. The only way to get true anime is DVD or the internet.

A) Kenshin was never on Adult Swim, it was on Toonami, so if you expected it to be aired uncut, then you are a fool.

B) They pretty much showed everything that happened in Bebop aside from Faye walking in on those two guys fucking in Jupiter Jazz. That's a far cry from "butchering", methinks.

Yesterday I marked when I saw that they're going to be showing FLCL next week. Hooray for 6 episode insanity!

...and when is this exactly?

Adult Swim's edits have been minimal as far as I can see. You can't really expect them to show those bullet wounds through the head in Cowboy Bebop.

It's only butchering if you tinker the content to the point where your version hardly resembles the original. If you want butchering, refer to old syndicated episodes of Dragonball, Dragonball Z and Sailor Moon.

what is FLCL?  is that short for something?

Another anime title, but only 6 episodes long. It's a love-or-hate title due to the insanity.

Yeah, FLCL is made by Gainex, famous for Neon Genesis Evangelion. It's also almost as fucked up--although it's constant and funny as opposed to spread out and creepy.

Oh GOD, is that ever true. I found an old tape where I had some Sailor Moon Season 1 episodes from some cable station out of Denver(?) back when I had satillite(pre-DirecTV) and man... it was TERRIBLE!

Granted, the CN aired ones weren't that much better, but geez...

Wrong. David Lucas is the VA of Spike and Roger Smith, but NOT Tom and Saburo. Tom and Saburo are voiced by Steven Jay Blum. Blum and Lucas's voices sound almost exactly alike. Many fans have confused the two (myself included).

Aren't David Lucas and Steven Blum the same person? I thought he used one name or the other depending on whether the project was union or not.

Hell, what could they have edited out of Bebop that they didn't leave in?  The ridiculous amounts of ultraviolence are still present, I don't think the show had much if any nudity, and hey, it is still Cartoon Network, so you gotta keep the cussing down to a minimum (although I still think even CN's version of Bebop has one of the best dub jobs I've ever heard).  What's so different about it on DVD?

They edited the swearing, cut down the amount of blood spilled in almost every violent scene, and cut out some shots completely (like the breasts of the transsexual in Jupiter Jazz, for example). Here's a complete list of the edits:

I guess I have different standards about censoring than you guys.

I don't think so. I believe one of them has discredited this. I'll see what I can find out about it.

I checked the web and it appears you are correct, Human Fly. It seems that they are the same person.

Actually, I was mainly defending Cartoon Network and saying that they don't "butcher" anime, but I can see where you're coming from IBM. It is a fairly big list of edits. However, in defense to Cartoon Network, they're only covering their own asses.

They never had to take the risks with Cowboy Bebop in the first place, yet they decided to do it anyway, albeit with censorship. However, from my perspective, their edits were much more acceptable than the liberties taken in the syndicated anime of the past which I mentioned before.

True, Cartoon Network did in fact censor quite a bit of Cowboy Bebop. However, I do not believe they butchered Cowboy Bebop through these edits. From a purist perspective, these edits can be seen as detractors from the original. However, you also have to remember that this is cable television and that they are attempting to expose what they show to as many people as possible. In the end you have to take the positives with the negatives.

I love that they are trying to make a bigger audience familiar with good anime, it's about time the public realizes that anime isn't just stuff like Sailor Moon, DBZ and Pokemon. Showing more mature anime shows like Bebop is a good thing, even if it is censored.

But if you want the real thing, you still have to get the DVDs. And that can get kind of expensive, so it would be great if there was a way to show the shows uncensored. But as long as that isn't possible, Adult Swim is doing what it can and I applaud them for that.

Showing Kenshin on a kids network like Toonami on the other hand is just awful. I just looked over the list of edits, and fuck them. Why even show the series if you have to censor all the stuff that made the series so good in the first place?

This may be an idiot question but the FLCL is going to be dubbed, right?

Any idea how good the enlish dub is, and who did it?

I do have the anime on my comp, but it always looks better on the TV. I just hope "Ride on Shooting Star" is still the end theme ;)

Yes FLCL will be English dubbed on Cartoon Network. I think only the International Channel does original language with subtitles.

Synch-Point is the group responsible for the English adaptation. I usually don't listen to English soundtracks, so I'm not too sure how their dub sounds.

And yes, Ride on Shooting Star is an excellent ending song.

Sailor Moon is terrible anyway. Well, I guess it's okay if you happen to be a twelve year old girl or are into gawking at flat-chested teen girls in short skirts and lots of unfunny jokes.

DBZ is of course laughable edited, i.e. "HFIL" and...

*plane explodes, shot of Z fighters looking up*

"I can see their parachutes, they're okay!"

Or...

*building is blown up*

Vegeta: "Too bad it's Sunday, or those buildings would have been filled with people."

I personally hate the dub of Lupin III. It's supposed to take place in the seventies but there are references to Shaq and Britney Spears...

Eh, I love Lupin's English dub. The guy who does Lupin is awesome when they go into his lecherous side.

In the episode about the vintage wine, the president's voice sounded like Bill Clinton and not Jimmy Carter.

What about the biggest running joke of early DBZ?

"I'm going to send you to the next dimension!"

Took the dubbing team forever to just give it up and say they're dead.

I forgot how they explained how Oolong waisted the wish on a pair of girl panties.

IIRC, in the English dub he just wished for "a pair of underwear", and they superimposed a logo of Shenron on the panties to make us laugh at the absurd idea that a dragon would logo his work and also to distract the viewer from the fact that they were PANTIES.

Sailormoon is awesome. I don't see anything bad about the dubbed episodes either. The censoring is not a big deal.

Adult Swim needs Irresponsible Captain Tylor stat. Funnier than shit, dramatic, it combines sophistication with immaturity, it would thrive. Anyone else seen this?

And shit, when Family Guy starts flagging I say they go with duckman, which is more caustic and offensive at times, but still quite funny

I've seen the first 13 episodes and I'm going to see the rest and the OVA's soon. It's a good show, funny moments and very cool characters. But I always thought that they could go a bit further with the gags. It's hard to describe, like, it wasn't 'over the top' enough.

I would'nt mind watching the Tick and Duckman on Cartoon Network but I think Comedy Central owns the rights to the series.

Yeah Adult Swim's cool but I DO NOT watch it for it's anime. I watch those in there original Japanese goodness on DVD. Screw dubs...they always suck.

That being said Sealab is one of the funniest shows ever.
