Okay, seeing as how the original thread really started to wane, I'm hoping maybe the conclusion of Round One, with the match-ups for Round Two all set, will spark some interest.

 

Well, here we go!

 

North Division Quarterfinals

 

#1 Link vs. #9 Fox McCloud

 

Nintendo-on-Nintendo violence, and a massacre at that.

 

#12 Ganondorf vs. #13 Magus

 

The first semi-significant Nintendo vs. Square showdown, unless you count Kirby vs. Ramza. Magus SHOULD win, unless enough people look ahead and vote for Ganondorf to get the novel Link vs. Ganondorf matchup. The black wind howls, and Ganondorf doesn't like the wind.

 

#3 Luigi vs. #6 Squall Leonheart

 

The SECOND semi-significant Nintendo vs. Square showdown. However, the outcome of this one should go towards the Big N.

 

#2 Samus Aran vs. #7 KOS-MOS

 

Nice, tidy win for Samus. I think we're headed towards Link vs. Samus in this bracket.

 

East Division Quarterfinals

 

#1 Cloud Strife vs. #8 Auron

 

The first match of the Cloud Division is a Square-on-Square massacre. How pleasantly symmetric (asymmetric?).

 

#4 Yoshi vs. #5 Bowser

 

WHO will go on to lose to Cloud? Find out soon!

 

#3 Master Chief vs. #11 Aeris Gainsborough

 

Totally reverse those seeds, and then it's an accurate portrayal.

 

#2 Sonic the Hedgehog vs. #7 Zero

 

THIS match I'm anxious to see. Zero's match got the highest number of votes of all the first-round matches, and Team Sonic has been WAY outperforming expectations. When two beloved franchises with few haters BUTT heads, it's a clash of epic proportions! I pick Sonic to win.

 

South Division Quarterfinals

 

#1 Mario vs. #9 Shadow the Hedgehog

 

Having RUINED a good novelty Mario vs. Wario match with the most unpredictible upset so far, Shadow now goes one-on-one with Wario's better half, the Savior of Gaming, Mario. Buh-bye, Shadow.

 

#4 Crono vs. #12 Kefka

 

Kefka pulled one of the lamest, closest victories ever over Pac-Man. Now the evil clown gets massacred by Crono worse than Doink got massacred by Benoit this week on SmackDown. We're all set for Mario vs. Crono 2: Crono's Revenge.

 

#3 Kirby vs. #6 Alucard

 

It will be interesting to see who wins here. I predict Alucard, but in the end it really doesn't matter, as the winner is merely a sacrificial lamb for...

 

#2 Sephiroth vs. #10 Max Payne

 

While no publicity is bad publicity, Maxx Payne's lawsuit against Rockstar over Max Payne will do NOTHING to help sway the voters against the mighty fanboy juggernaught Sephiroth.

 

West Division Quarterfinals

 

#1 Solid Snake vs. #8 Knuckles the Echidna

 

Knuckles surprised many by getting by a secondary Final Fantasy character. He won't get by Solid Snake.

 

#4 Dante vs. #5 Ryu

 

Capcom vs. Capcom! I have Dante as the winner, but Ryu will get my vote.

 

#3 Tommy Vercetti vs. #6 Donkey Kong

 

Vercetti COMPLETELY underwhelmed in his first round match. This is no dark horse champ, people. He MAY not even get by DK, but I think he can still manage that. Barely.

 

#2 Mega Man vs. #10 Zelda

 

This assumes that Mega Man wins today's match against Mr. Resetti, which is already in the bag.

Both have SUPREME name recognition, but since Mega Man is actually the star of his games, he is much more beloved. Mega Man to win (the match AND the division).

 

Any thoughts? Am I correct? Am I mistaken? Am I a loser? POST!

#1 Link vs. #9 Fox McCloud

 

This is going to be UGLY. Fox McCloud once might've had a Dark Horse's chance long ago, when his games actually meant something. Nowadays though, he's just a really big nobody for Link to dice up.

#12 Ganondorf vs. #13 Magus

 

This should be interesting. Both characters are pretty much have their own cult followings and so this should be a close fought contest. Whoever wins though, faces Link and I think even Magus fans would love to upset Ganondorf's match against Link. However, tough to call.

#3 Luigi vs. #6 Squall Leonheart

 

Squall started off loved by most Square fans. Now, he ain't loved a lot. I can see a lot of Square fans that hate Squall side with Luigi to get the win. That's also how I'm predicting it'll go down.

#2 Samus Aran vs. #7 KOS-MOS

 

Samus Aran by a good margin. I like KOS-MOS and all, but it's like SAMUS ARAN~! Enough said~!

Cloud rules all with a mighty sword. End discussion. Auron is a non-factor.

Tough call. Do Nintendo fans side with the heel to face Cloud, or side with the face, Yoshi, so that Cloud might be nicer to him?

Master Chief vs the Girl Who Square Fans Can Not Accept Is Dead. ...hm, I wonder who's going on here.

#2 Sonic the Hedgehog vs. #7 Zero

 

This will be interesting. Too close to call, but I'm saying Zero for the upset. Just because Zero seems to be more popular than his Blue Bomber buddy, X. Anyone calls X - Mega Man should be shot. That's like calling Zero - Bass. ...yes, I'm being sarcastic.

South Division Quarterfinals

 

#1 Mario vs. #9 Shadow the Hedgehog

 

I see upset in the making. Shadow did something that's building steam, and I can truly see him being the Dark Horse in the tourney. He does the deed of knocking out Mario and hell really has gotten loose. And his name is Shadow.

#4 Crono vs. #12 Kefka

 

I'm quite sure that Kefka's close call was due to people like me thinking "well, Pac-Man was the one of the very first franchise characters to the gaming world, I'll feel bad that he doesn't get at least a vote". Hence I think this'll be close. Crono should come out on top though and the world will be alright again.

#3 Kirby vs. #6 Alucard

 

Interesting contest, but I see the Cult of Castlevania arise from whatever coffin they've been in to vote for Alucard into the next round.

I think this might be Sephiroth's year to reign supreme. Max Payne certainly isn't going to stand in his way at all.

#1 Solid Snake vs. #8 Knuckles the Echidna

 

Solid Snake holds the advantage that his game had more drama to it. Knucks really hasn't done much in a long time.

#4 Dante vs. #5 Ryu

 

Although Dante seemingly is walking in the favorite that's about all he's getting out of this match. This will be close, but I do think that Ryu will be victorious due to some sheer slim votes.

#3 Tommy Vercetti vs. #6 Donkey Kong

 

Donkey Kong will win. After Tommy's last performance, ugh is all I'm thinking about right now. This will be good, just not tight like it probably should be.

#2 Mega Man vs. #10 Zelda

 

As much power as Mega Man has behind his name, this one will be a toss up. Zelda has a pretty decent chunk of votes behind her thanks to Link and the Zelda Series, but those Link fans might be thinking "Link vs. Zelda-Final Match". ...hm, you know that sounds interesting.

There are 32 characters left in the tournament (again, counting today's match as a loss for Resetti, which it's obvious it will be).

 

Of those 32:

 

11 are Nintendo characters

 

Mario, Luigi, Bowser, & Yoshi from the Mario series

 

Link, Zelda, & Ganondorf from the Legend of Zelda series

 

Samus Aran, Fox McCloud, Donkey Kong, and Kirby rounding out the field.

 

8 are Squaresoft characters

 

Cloud, Aeris, & Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII

 

Crono & Magus from Chrono Trigger

 

Squall, Auron, & Kefka each being the lone representatives of their games.

 

4 are Capcom characters

 

Mega Man & Zero from the Mega Man/Mega Man X series

 

Dante from the Devil May Cry series, and Ryu the Street Fighter

 

3 are Sega characters

 

Sonic, Knuckles, & Shadow all being from the Sonic series

Since I'm playing and loving Chrono Trigger all over again right now, I'll go with Crono.

Alucard, hate Kirby.

My favorite character from my favorite RPG against the hero of a game that bored me to death. No contest here.

Knuckles is one of the few Sonic chars I don't like, and I'm a big MGS mark. Solid sneaks through.

 

#4 Dante vs. #5 Ryu

 

I seem to be one of the few who didn't like DMC or Dante itself. Since I'm also a SF2 fan since the beginning it's Ryu who'll get my vote.

 

#3 Tommy Vercetti vs. #6 Donkey Kong

 

Donkey Kong.

 

#2 Mega Man vs. #10 Zelda

 

Don't like either character that much, but I'll go with Mega Man.

I loathe Xenosaga, I detest Xenosaga, and I don't get why in the hell this lousy character was revived for it, but she seems to fit in.

 

Terminate with extreme prejudice, Samus.

 

East Division Quarterfinals

 

#1 Cloud Strife vs. #8 Auron

 

Crono's blond-haired, cross-dressing little cousin will win, because of how inexplicably popular FFVII characters are in this tourney.

 

#4 Yoshi vs. #5 Bowser

 

I like Yoshi, and he starred in some of the greatest games ever...then there's Yoshi's Cookie, Safari, and that lame N64 follow up to Yoshi's Island. Bowser's only playable roles were in the Mario Kart games, Super Mario RPG, and similar high quality titles. So Bowser.

 

#3 Master Chief vs. #11 Aeris Gainsborough

 

The dead girl wins. I need to go check out some gifs of Sephiroth murdering Aeris.

 

#2 Sonic the Hedgehog vs. #7 Zero

 

Zero, the pretty bishonen reploid, is probably going to pull this out narrowly.

 

South Division Quarterfinals

 

#1 Mario vs. #9 Shadow the Hedgehog

 

Mario SHOULD win, but Shadow might make a surprisingly strong showing.

 

#4 Crono vs. #12 Kefka

 

Crono as a character is extremely dull, but he's the hero of his game, one I feel is superior to FFVI. So I vote Crono.

 

#3 Kirby vs. #6 Alucard

 

Kirby is such an underrated character and so are his games. Alucard may look like a whispy bishonen, but his ass-kicking powers are almost unrivaled in platformers. Despite not being in a game in a while, he still seems to hold onto his popularity, so he'll probably overwhelm marshmellow boy.

 

#2 Sephiroth vs. #10 Max Payne

 

Every time another Sephiroth/Cloud lemon is written, a devil gets his horns. The obsessive Squareheads will see to it their beloved silver stallion massacres Max by a large margin.

 

West Division Quarterfinals

 

#1 Solid Snake vs. #8 Knuckles the Echidna

 

One of gamedom's biggest badasses vs. the sidekick once thought able to take over the Sonic franchise. Yet, Knuckles is just another dope in the Sonic Adventure cast, his thunder stolen by Shadow. Snake by a 2-to-1 margin.

 

#4 Dante vs. #5 Ryu

 

Despite the disappointing DMC2, Dante's still very popular. Against the wandering warrior that's been the main star of the SF series? Maybe.

 

I predict an upset by Dante.

 

#3 Tommy Vercetti vs. #6 Donkey Kong

 

GTA is a good game and all, but DKC is out on GBA, plus DK benefits from old school recognition. DK, but not by too much.

 

#2 Mega Man vs. #10 Zelda

 

The Zelda games are more highly thought of than Mega Man's games. Zelda isn't a playable character, though...

 

So Mega Man with a come-from-behind victory.

Correction Andrew. An upset only occurs if the lower seed overtakes the higher seed. And if they are more spread out than a single placing. And certainly Dante doesn't take up either category.

 

So your predicting what is to happen. No upsetting here.
