MLB deadline trades

Recommended Posts

Guest Redhawk

Up here in Seattle, the media and Mariners fans are up in arms because the M's didn't make any significant deadline trades. Everyone says, "What kind of message is it sending to the players and fans that ownership isn't trying hard?" and stuff like that. And from what I've heard, the same thing is going on in St. Louis and some other cities who have contenders.

This is what I don't get, though; Since when is having confidence in the current roster a BAD thing? Every accuses the front office of being lazy and the owners of being cheap, but why not consider that the GM and owners think this group is good enough and doesn't need to bring in a ringer?

Even the M's players have been complaining about no trade being made. Basically they're admitting they can't hang onto first place in the AL West or win a title on their own, and they're crying for help. What kind of athlete ever says that? I could understand if they were in last place -- the NBA's Jason Williams said of the Grizzlies, "We suck. We just suck." And he was right. But why is a first place team sitting around acting like they're not good enough to win on their own? Why not take responsibility for yourself and hang onto your lead and win the title instead of waiting for Juan Gonzalez to fall out of the sky?

I don't know, it's just one more reason why baseball players are the pussiest pro athletes out there.

Every team has a flaw that is noticeable and fans just wish it was addressed.

That's about all it is. Besides, I'd rather have management confident in my team then making desperate trades to get that "right piece".

Then again, it hasn't done a lot of teams good to be sitting on the fence lately.

I dunno...

Do I want my team to sit on it's proverbial ass and NOT do something? Or be like my team and send everyone off in another attempt of retooling...

Although we got like 6 pitchers for two guys that were gone at the end of the season anyways and one solid all around player whom will be missed.

I don't like how there is a HUGE outcrying backlash in Cincy...

Marv said it best "Let's See Where it goes...THEN make your judgment"

My guess is that Seattle is probably going to get caught up to by Oakland, who at least did something to help their team, while Seattle's players were expecting someone to join the ranks to fill a void, and they only got Rey Sanchez.

Which is what Bret Boone's Primary complaint was...That the other teams are loading up and seattle with a weakness...The owners did SQUAT to help the team.

Boone wanted to leave because they fired his dad though.

Last year on July 1st the Mariners were 6 games ahead of Oakland. The A's then traded for Ricardo Rincon, Ted Lilly, and Ray Durham. The Mariners did nothing.

On September 4th the A's were ahead of the Mariners by 6 games.

It has to be frustrating for the players when they have been burnt before by their competition moving when they didn't. So to have it happen again, some of the players are going to sound off.

Yeah...BTW did you catch the whole Boone Press Conference when he was traded?

That wasn't acting my friend...

He loved Cincy and Cincy loved him.

It was interesting...I went to the reds game tonight and I swear I saw maybe One Dunn jersey and about 100 boone shirts...

He loved the city, and the city loved him, but he strongly suggested the trade after they fired his dad.

Really can't blame him though. Wish he wasn't in the Bronx.

He said it because he wanted to help his team out .

and I believe him...He wasn't like Jose Gillen who praticaly just went

"Nice knowing ya guys...BYE!"

And laughed as he left the door... rubbed me off as an Asshole anyways.

New York Yankees picked up a fucking Class Act.

Seattle can still beat out the A's. It's just another bat in the lineup would really help. Besides Boone, Ichiro, and Martinez no one is having that great a year.

NBA players are without question the biggest crybaby athletes in this country.

NBA players are without question the biggest crybaby athletes in this country.

If that's the case, how often do you see this in basketball....

1) One team getting mad because the other team is still trying to score when they're already up by 20 in the third quarter.

2) That same losing team getting mad that the other team is running fast up and down the court when they're up by a lot.

3) Fouling someone just because someone on their team fouled someone on your team.

4) The entire team coming off the bench for a fight just to stand around and not actually fight.

5) Players complaining about the glare from the arena lights effecting their jump shot (Mariners fans know what I'm talking about)

6) Players on a first-place team crying about "Why doesn't ownership care?" when no deadline trades are made.

7) An announcer saying something like, "They shouldn't put Steve Kerr in right now. He's already played two games in a row, and in that last game he played 10 whole minutes." (think relief pitchers)

8) Someone complaining that the other team is "stealing signs."

9) Other teams whining about how the Knicks have too much money.

10) Jeff Van Gundy getting mad because LeBron James walked into the Rockets locker room hours before the game. (remember the whole "Pedro Martinez in the Blue Jays clubhouse" thing?)

All teams complain when the other team runs up the score.

3) Fouling someone just because someone on their team fouled someone on your team.

Players foul in retaliation, mostly on the same play.

Pinwheels anyone?

Because throwing a baseball is an unnatural motion, that puts tremendous strain, wear, and tear on your arm. Pitching too much leads to serious injuries, which hurts your team.

I'm sick and tired of players labeled as crybabies. They're real people, with real concerns. Are you telling em the rest of us go to school or work and have absolutely no complainst whatsoever, our entire lives? Its not like they run around announcing their problems to whoever is within earshot. Most athletes work harder than the rest of us ever will.

Every team has its own flaws, no matter how many or how few exist, they're still there. If a team is serious about contending, then deals need to be made to try and eliminate the flaws that plague their team. A team like the Braves didn't really need to go make a deal, so you're hearing little complaints out that way for them making no deals. Their playoff spot is secured at this point, while you have teams like the Mariners and Cardinals who are on the bubble at this point, yet no deals were made. The Cards are in need of some pitching and did nothing, while the Mariners were in need of a few things themselves, and did nothing. The fact that they've been slumping lately didn't help matters and just made it seem even worse that no deals were made. I think you'll find the most complaining about no deals going down in the areas where the team could go either way as far as making it to the post-season is concerned.

But...the Mariners did get someone. They got REY SANCHEZ!!!

As a Mariner fan, I am pissed. The team gets off to hot starts and then fades after the All-Star break. Instead of risking something to get better Seattle won't risk anything at all. Which would be good, if Oakland wasn't running around making key trades that get them to the playoffs. There's big holes at third base, left field and the starting rotation. Oakland improves every year at the trade deadline, making them that much tougher. I suppose it's good that at least Seattle didn't make a trade for the sake of making a trade (like the Dodgers are getting blasted for down here with Ventura), but I would have really liked to see a big mid-season acquisition for down the stretch.

All teams complain when the other team runs up the score.

Running up the score is one thing. Merely going through the basic motions of the game (i.e., swinging at strikes, even if the count is 3-0) is another. If a basketball team was like, "They shouldn't even take shots when they're up by 20," they'd be crybabies.

Pinwheels anyone?

Those were objects brought by fans that were made for the purpose of distraction. Glare from stadiums is natural. And admit it, those pinwheels were ridiculously distracting.

Because throwing a baseball is an unnatural motion, that puts tremendous strain, wear, and tear on your arm. Pitching too much leads to serious injuries, which hurts your team.

Facing three batters for three nights in a row should not wear a major league pitcher out.

If you went to school or work on TV and complained, people are going to call you a crybaby.

Keep in mind relief pitchers have a speciality. If you're a setup man and work 1 inning. You likely won't be has sharp in game 3 has you where in game 1.

From what I say Pat Gillick did try and get Boone but since he couldn't he pretty much left it at that.

Dude...have you ever pitched? Do you have ANY idea how physically demanding it is? I'm not talking about just the strain on your arm, but the physical conditioning you need to push off the mound constantly. Do you know how much work it takes to get ready to pitch (especially in very short amount of time, like most relievers do)?

There's a reason why baseball pundits begin talking about teams' bullpen fatigue at this point in the season: it's a very real problem, particularly for teams whose bullpens have been overworked all year (i.e. Houston).

Exactly. It also explains why the Cardinals didn't get any pitching: there just wasn't a deal in place that they liked. No GM worth his salt is going to mortgage a great deal of his team's future for a quick fix (typically a rent-a-player) to try and get in the playoffs just this one year...especially if his team is a perennial contender like the Mariners or Cardinals.

I don't know if it has been reported around here yet, but Seattle just traded Jeff Nelson back to the Yankees for Armando Benitez a few days ago.

I think it might have been. While Benitez might wind up being the closer if Sasaki can't get back this season, the main reason for the trade was to get rid of Jeff Nelson, who made negative comments about management. I'm glad they didn't get rid of Boone too, who also has been very vocal.

They get rid of Boone, and we might as well crown the A's right now.

What's Boone's contract status anyways?

Didn't he re-up with the Mariners last year?
