Help: Taking Show/Tape Suggestions

Recommended Posts

Guest Deviant

Firstly, a mod can feel free to delete, close or move this. I posted a similar topic in General Wrestling, but I was hoping to get a few opinions from Puro fans. The story in short is that I have two free tapes to choose from a guy who has practically everything.

I'm a ROH mark and don't know where to start. For the record, I tried the pinned topic, and it didn't open for me. However, I think I remember checking that out a while ago and it was suggesting matches, rather than tapes or shows, which is what I'm after. So if anyone out there could point me in the right direction, that would be much appreciated.

From what I've heard, Zero-One sounds great, with a healthy use of American talent I'll recognise and solid wrestling. I managed to find and download Styles vs Low Ki from Zero-One and it is phenomenal, pun only partially intended. I don't know any of the Japanese wrestlers, except for the really well-known like Misawa, Kobashi, Mutoh, Ohtani and such. So reading a card is useless to me.

Also, Toryumon looks like a great company, and I'm inclined to give anything Ultimo Dragon-related a try. But is it all cruiserweight action, not that I'd have a problem with that?

But seriously, if you like shilling your favourite company or show like I do for ROH to my friends, then this is your chance. I'm sure this type of topic has been posted a billion times, so forgive me for that one. I'm open to anything from any company, so have at it.

Thanks.

There really isn't a better introduction. Everyone starts with it. To continue on the Junior love you'll have after that, I suggest: J-Crown 1996, Super J Cup 1995, Best Of The Super J 1995, and maybe a Lyger, Pegasus or Dynamite Kid comp.

As far as AJPW stuff. I recommend Real World Tag League 1996, New Year Giant Series 1997, Super Power Series 1999, Misawa/Kawada 3/6/94 tape.

For Zero One I suggest the Fire Festival 2002 as a good starting point. It features a ****+ match between Ohtani & Tanaka.

If Joshi intrests you I'd reccomend starting with All Japan Women Championship Night 95 or AJW Big Egg Wrestling Universe, both cards have a ton of great action on them and it's not stuff you need to have a great understanding of the style to appreciate either

The card for the J Cup 1994 does look to live up to every bit of hype it's given, and I'm pretty sure I have 3 or 4 of the matches on tape in either my Benoit or Eddy comps. Nonetheless, that does take care of my what to get with my two free tapes problem in style...

The Fire Festival is split over 5 tapes, fuck! I'll still get it, but fuck!

If anyone else out there wants to give me some more ideas, feel free, knowing me, I will probably get them all in time. In particular, stuff which has more of the American guys in Japan would be great.

Has Zero-One ever done a show that focused on the American talent, and was it any good?

Day Three is the best of the Fire Festival. It has the Tanaka/Ohtani match and features some American names like CW Anderson, Spanky, Steve Corino and a man you'll be familiar with TAKA Michinoku.

I'm not completely in the dark when it comes to puro. I know Taka not only from his WWE run, but from some of the awesome puro matches I've seen him in. Some of my faves have been vs Hayabusa, and some of the 6 man tags on my Best of Curry Man tape.

But thanks for the tip. I've decided to get Vengeance as one of my two free tapes, as it sounds pretty good(when it was good). Hell even Dames gave it three 4*+ ratings, as if the matches didn't sell themselves.

Is there a single puro tape that my life is incomplete without?

Fun with Gaijin:

Get a complilation of Hansen/Kobashi's famous encounter in 93.

Vader Kills Inoki is a fun match.

Maybe check out some Misawa/Partner vs Ace/Doc

Benoit's match with Samurai from 92(3?) is wild shit as well.

There are plenty you can't live without but it's better to get the style a bit more before diving straight into Misawa/Kawada/Kobashi/Taue goodness and under appreciating it

I'd strongly reccomend Championship Night though, I have 3 matches on there at ****1/2+

I'm not sure about what to start on as far as AJ heavies go as I jumped in the deep end. But, I'm echoing everything before me: Start with Super J Cup 1994 and move from there, Super J Cup 1995 runs along the same quality of wrestling.

NO! NO! NO!

Please do not start with 12/6/96, 6/3/94, 1/97, or any of that overrated bull shit from post 97(excluding Kawada/Kobashi 6/98) where the promotion was a shell of it's former self. How many times does this really need to be explained?

You want a good non comp to tape to get introduced into All Japan heavies, go to high spots and buy the TV Tape April-July 93 for just 10 bucks!

For just ten bucks you get:

two solid Misawa vs. Hansen matches.

Gordy vs. Misawa in their best match together.

A fun Kawada vs. Taue match that helps start their alliance which is important down the road.

Misawa vs. Kobashi when they were young, healthy, knew how to sell, and their matches actually had heat. I'd take this over any of that post 97 bullshit.

Kobashi vs. Kawada in a god like sprint that has to be seen to be believed.

Kawada punting Akiyama to hell and back.

And an awesome six man tag to close the tape.

Okay, that has all been noted and I'll get all the stuff that sounds great within two months. Top of the list is the J Cup 94 though, and you guys are saying to get the J Cups after that one too? Is there a bad one I should steer clear of?

I'll probably be focusing more on the guys like Liger and Dynamite Kid, from what I've seen a Liger comp tape would be priceless.

I wouldn't mind giving some joshi a look, just so I can know what womens wrestling is actually capable of...

Anyway guys, I think that's enough for now, once I get the majority of those suggested my wallet will have taken quite a beating.

'95 is basically on par with '94, doesn't have the classic stand-outs though. 2000 is run by MPW. It gets mixed reviews. Not a bad show, juts doesn't touch the first two.

Just get 94/95 when it comes to J-cups, if it's more Junior goodness you're after once you're done with those you're better off checking out the Liger/Sano, Liger/Ohtani feuds and any Top of the super Junior tourny, The J-crown tourney is also reccomended by moi

I had the same prejudice towards Joshi as you possibly do due to the female crap WWE feeds us but that all chaged when I'd seen my first joshi show (Dreamslam in my case) if all you've seen of the joshi girls is Survivors 95 and Summerslam 93 you've not seen ANYTHING yet :)

I'm a Toryumon mark, so i'm gonna recommend you to purchase El Numero Uno 2003.......its just a really fun show with a awesome main event of CIMA vs Genki Horiguchi. Also, NOAH's Differ Cup was great, Yossino/Dragon vs Sasaki/Takaiwa was awesome and Kenta/Kotaro Suzuki vs Kudo/Mikami showed how fucking great Kenta is.
