Pitt junior Brandon Smith wanted a tattoo that proclaimed his manliness, so he decided to get the Chinese characters for “strength” and “honor” on his chest. After 20 minutes under the needle of local tattoo artist Andy Sakai, he emerged with the symbol for “small penis” embedded in his flesh.

       “I had it for months before I knew what it really meant,” Smith said.

 

      “Then I went jogging through the Carnegie Mellon campus and a group of Asian kids started laughing and calling me ‘Shorty.’ That’s when I knew something was up.”

 

     Sakai, an award-winning tattoo artist, was tired of seeing sacred Japanese words, symbols of his heritage, inked on random white people. So he used their blissful ignorance to make an everlasting statement. Any time acustomer came to Sakai’s home studio wanting Japanese tattooed on them, he modified it into a profane word or phrase.

 

     “All these preppy sorority girls and suburban rich boys think they’re so cool ‘cause they have a tattoo with Japanese characters. But it doesn’t mean shit to them!” Sakai said. “The dumbasses don’t even realize that I’ve written ‘slut’ or ‘pervert’ on their skin!”

 

     In the last month, seven people unknowingly received explicit tattoos from the disgruntled artist. Kerri Baker, a Carlow College freshman, paid $50 to have the symbols for “beautiful goddess” etched above her belly button, but when she went into Szechuan Express Asian Noodle Shop sporting a bare midriff, the giggling employees explained to her that the tattoo really said, “Insert General Tso’s Chicken Here!”

 

     “I don’t even like General Tso’s!” Baker sobbed. “I’m a vegetarian!”

 

     Sakai doesn’t feel guilty about using hapless college students as canvases for his graffiti.

 

     “I think I’m helping my fellow man by labeling all the stupid people in the world,” he explained. “It’s not a crime, it’s a public service.”

It's a shame those got so popular, they used to be sort of ok. I wouldn't mind having 'slut' or 'pervert' tattooed on me, personally.

On one hand it's always hilarious when posers get their just desserts.

 

On the other hand, some japanese or chinese characters look really cool and a lot of Americans think they look exotic.

 

Just because he's mad white people want to use Japanese characters is no excuse, he's supposed to be a professional?

 

I think the lesson here is always make a good impression on someone who's about to permenantly change your appearance. I'm sure if one said hello to the guy and thought hard about the tat, made a good impression so to speak, he would put the proper characters on.

 

But I'd just get a Kermit the Frog tattoo instead. Maybe with a character that said "Hometown Hero" or something.

Just a quick question slightly off-subject.

 

I've been thinking on-and-off for the past couple of years of getting my late grandmother's name tattoo'ed in Hebrew script lettering.

 

Here are the factors:

1. It would be a permanent way of remembering her. Even if my memory of her fades as I get older.

2. No problems with the foreign language lettering- since it is my heritage.

3. I have always wanted some sort of distinctive and creative body marking (I look horrible with dyed hair, and I look at old photos of me with my goatee and it's not a look I like now.)

 

Cons:

1. In most denominations of Judaism, you can't be buried in a Jewish cemetery if you die with a tattoo. (Not mine, but still.)

2. It might be offensive to Holocaust survivors, since they were forcibly tattooed.

3. I can imagine my grandmother telling me how stupid it is.

I think that this might not be true ... the part where the girl says that she doesn't even like General Tso's because she's a vegetarian seemed fishy (no pun intended), so I looked at the other articles that this newspaper offer:

Japanese/Chinese characters are neat. And if I was thinking of a tattoo, I'd probably ask for one. However, I am learned in a little Japanese, so I understand why the guy is insulted when people ask for tattoos of his native language place on someone's body and they've got NO idea what it means.

 

Still, that's just not really that great of an idea to fight back.

I find this to be utterly hillarious. You'd think that they'd at least try and research the symbols a bit. They don't nessacerily deserve what they get, but I still find it funny.

In terms of professionalism that is terrible, considering people will pay a gross amount of money to the shop and the artist and that he is insulting his customers instead of just going along with whatever retarded idea they want. They may be stupid, but they're the ones lining your pockets with cash, buddy.

 

I see no way in how I would be offended at a white guy with spanish (my first and I guess 'cultural' language) tattoo'ed on him, other than some Mexicans would laugh at him or whatever. Why should this guy be so insulted at the 'defacing' of his native and cultural heritage? He should accept the fact that the reason why that's a fad now and why people want it is because it is a nice work of art and a way of admiring his culture, not insulting it.
