Fantasy Football Advice

So, this is my first year in a money league. Twelve teams, and I've got the #2 pick in the draft. My franchise player will either be William Green (CLE)* or Deuce McAllister (NO) if I trade away my third round pick. I can conceivably get Vick or McNabb in the first round, since most of the top tier RBs will have been franchised before the draft. Which of the two QBs should I take? I''m leaning more toward McNabb, but if you have any advice to offer, please spill.

*Regarding the possible trade for Deuce, I'm leaning away from this because I'd lose my 3rd round pick and due to the wrap, I'd have to wait 22 picks for someone between the 2nd and fourth rounds, and by then I'll have most likely Deuce, a QB, and a WR with no upper tier RBs left. I would take the trade in a heartbeat, except we have to start two RBs, and I'd rather have two better RBs than just Deuce and a nobody. Plus, Green seems to be a real up-and-comer, and besides the other choices I have to franchise aren't really an option.

I know I'm probably leaving a lot of info out, so if you have any questions, feel free to yell at me for being so abstruse. Any and all advice would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Since you have "franchise" players, I'm guessing this is a keeper league? If so, Vick, no question. I think McNabb will probably be a little better for this year, so if it's a non-keeper league, then go with him. But Vick will definitely improve over last season, and the sky's basically the limit from there.

Vick has better receivers on the team as Peerless Price is a candidate for 100+ receptions this season, McNabb does not have a player the caliber of Price on the team. As for RB think about 2nd tier guys like Amos Zeroue of the Steelers as he could be a starter, also consider Charlie Gardner as RB to get he did get 900 yards rushing and 900 recieving.

William Green doesn't impress me at all, don't waste a franchise pick on him.

Ya think Peerless can have the same success as last year being with Moulds?

I don't.

Price's speed, while adequate, has never impressed me. He looks like the typical Willie Jackson type; you know, he rocked ass with Joe Horn, but sucked in DC.

I just do not think highly of Pinkston and Thrash of the Eagles.

Peerless Price will not be the next Keyshaun Johnson, he will produce big numbers. The defense has to worry about Vick's running abilities so they cannot double team Price all the time, this will leave gaps for Price to make the big play.

This is where the cover two comes in.

McNabb has shown he doesn't need exceptional recievers to put up gaudy numbers. I'd pick him over Vick, simply because I fear Vick turning into the next Kordell Stewart. I know he's a better all-around player than Stewart, but the fantasy comparisons are striking.

Top tier fantasy player's first year at a position is so incredible that it sparks everyone to take him in the first round. He has a run-first coach who hesitates to throw the ball downfield. He has one good reciever. He's a running quarterback, who will lose durability fast as he gets pummelled. He's had some history of injury.

Too risky to pick in round one, IMO.

That's what I was thinking. What exactly has Green done to warrant a franchise tag.

The fun part of a keeper league is that you can at least do a reasonable mock draft based on what the other teams need. In the case of my keeper league, most of the starting RBs have been taken and it's likely that the others will be quickly snapped up, so I'm probably looking at a QB or WR, and since I've got McNair a second QB isn't looking too bad - but I'm probably looking at Kerry Collins or Trent Green there.

Anyways, if you think you can grab another decent RB early on, keep green, otherwise I'd grab Deuce.

I'd also grab Vick and see what people are willing to give up for him. Since the guy has tremendous upside (tm Hubie Brown) if you swing something early you could probably parlay him into a very good QB and a high pick, at the very least.

I would keep Deuce and use the other two picks on a QB and another RB. If you are trading away a third round pick you could get another very good RB (Henry, Green, Dillon) in the first round, and that would give you two top 10 backs. This is if you get a high pick. And you will be able to get a top tier QB (McNabb, Vick, Manning, Culpepper) in the second round.

I wouldn't worry about using a high pick on a receiver. I have been waiting til the 4th round on in my drafts and you still get good receivers while by that point RBs are gone. Don't think that because the WRs aren't flashy top 3 names that they aren't good. You can win with a receiving group of Chad Johnson, Koren Robinson, and Donald Driver types. You can't win with a RB group of Duce Staley and Amos Zereoue types.

Most importantly though is to know the scoring system of your league. Most leagues rushing touchdowns are more than passing which is why RBs are a premium. But if your league doesn't devalue QB stats, QB is the most valuable position.

As for McNabb/Vick, I like McNabb. He threw 17 TDs in his 10 starts last year with a few rushing TDs thrown in. He was well on his way to throwing for 3500 running for 6-700 with 30-35 total TDs. With no help.

...and Amos Zereoue types.

Pshaw. Zero put on some weight this year and could be a HUGE sleeper if he beats out Bettis.

I like Amos and have no doubt he will beat out Bettis at some point. He is a very good 3rd RB this year, possibly a good 2nd if you have a great 1. But you can't build around him right now.

Well running QBs are always proned to injury, McNabb was injuried last season yet his pass percentage went up when he could not run in the final games.

Vick will not be the next Kordell, Vick is not Slash.

I would still pick Vick in a keeper league because he has so much "potential".

Blake was good back in the day when he had Darnay Scott to throw to and Price could be that player for Vick.

Vick won't be damaged goods until his 5 or 6 year in the league.

Again, this is the exact same thing we were saying about Stewart in 1998.

Vick has been taking even MORE of a pounding than Stewart did, and I'd venture to say that Stewart had a superior offensive line than the Falcons.

I'm not sold on him yet, and I'm surprised so many of you think he's an automatic lock to throw 4000 yards and 40 touchdowns.

Put it in the book, he's out by week eight with an ankle sprain.

Vick is will be the MVP of the league. And everybody in the country will be running to buy his jersey.

Carson Palmer should be your franchise QB.

Thats crazy talk.......fear the curse of the Heisman Trophy

Chris Simms has a better chance of starting this season than Carlson Palmer does.

How many times can the Falcons play the Bengals?

Let's hope that the coaching staff does not rush Palmer to the starting job too fast. If he does play it should not be any sooner than week 12.

Fuck Chris Simms. Palmer will break the curse.

Kingsbury > Simms > Palmer

Damned right.

Vick is not Kordell Stewart. He is not Jeff Blake. He's better than both of those guys, but I have to think it's better to err on the side of caution and go with McNabb as the first-rounder.

Btw, Alge Crumpler is the most important "receiver" the Falcons have. I don't think Peerless Price will have a gaudy season with Stainy McRandom lining up opposite him instead of Eric Moulds. Considering the Falcons' O line and Vick's tendency to scramble, the underneath passes to Crumpler will be vital.
